This implies that the majority of FGC players, including pros, give any form of fuck about being beholden to some ridiculous standards forced on us by other people. Why the hell should Aris be banned from tournaments in which he usually participates in? Because him and some broad had communication issues and didn’t hash stuff out properly? Get real.
The reality of things is that he adds more than he takes away from the FGC, including tutorials and other such stuff. So to answer your question: he isn’t banned from tournaments because TO’s aren’t spineless idiots.
You’re saying he shouldn’t be allowed to play VIDEO GAMES because he said some mean things that one time even though it was a joke in the first place and he apologized after? I think the differing ideologies the FGC has with people who think like you do is that saying someone isn’t allowed to compete for any reason other than the threat of violent acts happening and causing physical harm to someone else is pretty fucking retarded. That doesn’t mean we agree with what he did, but we also aren’t going to be ridiculous and make sure he doesn’t so much as sneak in the back door over a hobby either.
The FGC above all else is a thick skinned community and not one that shuns others for ideologies we don’t agree with. I am more than certain there are people in the community who are transphobic. Are we going to find those people and make sure they never get to play in a tournament ever because AdelheidStark is going to that event as well? Of course not. If they cause a scene or ruin the experience for someone else obviously we would step in, but that is no reason to deny someone in participating in their hobby.
This isn’t e-sports and we all know it, and I don’t think most people in the FGC care. Not many people set out to make sure we have the nicest, most politically correct, exclusive community possible. The reason the FGC works is because everyone is involved in it, everyone is welcome, everyone comes together. It doesn’t matter if you’re a guy, girl, straight, gay, trans, misogynist, masochistic, blue, purple, whatever. That being said, just because we don’t get up in arms and actively remove misogynistic people from the community doesn’t mean that 100% of the community is misogynistic. That is a horribly ignorant statement to make no matter how you look at it. Personally, I don’t think I have to prove anything to someone who thinks an entire community of people are racist and sexist because of the acts of a small handful of people.
See, this is what I don’t get. I think what Aris did was wrong and it was perfectly reasonable for Miranda to feel uncomfortable or even unsafe, but I’m not really sure how we jump from that to stuff like this. People make mistakes. Unless their mistakes are a lot worse than his, those mistakes shouldn’t really preclude them from participating in public life. He probably shouldn’t be put in a coaching position like that again and the CrossAssault people (whose idea was that, anyway?) really should have done something at the time, but a lifetime ban?
Consider the staggering number of people who have done much worse things are prominent figures in other fields, and nobody seems to address that. Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault twice and he still plays football. Floyd Mayweather has been convicted of domestic abuse and battery, he still boxes. I could keep listing off examples, but I think you see where this is going. They aren’t banned from their respective sports, and unlike “the FGC,” those sports actually have relatively central authorities capable of enforcing those bans. Does this mean everyone who watches sports is sexist? Charlie Sheen was the highest paid actor on television not long after he was convicted of domestic abuse charges. Is everyone who watches TV, or at least networks that air his programs, a sexist? If the answer to those questions is “no,” you have to consider why the FGC should be held to a higher standard when it’s actually less capable of reaching that standard for purely logistical reasons? In short, people who have done much worse than what Aris did have gone similarly unpunished by groups much more able to punish them. This is, of course, to say nothing of what people who are in positions of authority, themselves, have said and done; let’s count the politicians who have emerged relatively unscathed from sexual harassment scandals and then the politicians who have partially built their career on misogynist rhetoric. Sexism is a problem, “sexism in the fighting game community” is just a smokescreen that obscures the pervasiveness of that problem.
Some broad? Nice sexism. Strong stuff, impressive.
I don’t know how to feel. Aris and Miranda made up I think, there is still a large amount of sexism and homophobia in the FGC but .Our image isn’t positive, partly due to media coverage but also partly due to our actions. However, the thing is that a good amount of the FGC doesn’t care if this thing gets big or not, it really doesn’t and we’re too divided for there to be any real reform.
Aris is a great content producer, I don’t agree with all of his views but he shouldn’t be banned from the FGC. However, there is a difference between growing thick skin and then letting bigots be bigots with no consequences.
Well he has gotten consequences. Idk y people act like nothing happened. If you have people that like you, no matter what you do wrong, you still be alright in the end. For better or for worse.
Aris can keep playing games all he wants, I just think allowing him in the competitive scene after what he did is sending the wrong message. He didn’t just make a few jokes, he SEXUALLY HARASSED A WOMAN FOR SEVERAL DAYS WHILE SHE WAS FORCED BY CONTRACT TO BE NEAR HIM! That is fucked up beyond belief!
As for the second part of your statement… Noel “Falcon Punch” Brown attacked anther player over something they said at a tournament a few years ago (a crippled one at that), and he’s still allowed to compete. Even if you want to argue that he was justified due to the other guy trash talking, it should never have gotten to that point either way.
And yeah, there have been pro athletes in the NFL, NBA, and so forth who have done far more heinous things. The difference between them and the FGC is that there are millions of dollars on the line in pro sports, so as you can imagine the management is corrupt as hell. Not so in the FGC. So, from the most cynical standpoint imaginable, the FGC can at least afford to have some standards.
The FGC is a collective of fighting game players, not a court system. If he cheats in fighting games, he’d be banned. If he does something illegal, then you have a justice system to punish him.
Also Noel Brown punched the guy because the other guy kept touching his stuff iirc, even after being told not to. Still doesn’t justify it, but its better than punching him over trash talk imo.
People don’t make mistakes or have poor lack of judgement, they should never be forgiven and discharged dishonorably from the FGC.
Noel Brown should’ve just continued asking Smooth Viper (who was in a cast for jumping off a balcony) to stop throwing/smacking his bag around until Smooth Viper listened or got bored of doing it.
yeah for better or worse the FGC is really just a loose collection of smaller local scenes, so widespread judgments like that are a bit difficult. In the case of violence or threats of violence it would be nice to be able to rid ourselves of those players for good.
Damn right, This is the** INTERNET**. If I can’t take angry pot shots at some stranger on the internet, who can I take pot shots at, Obama?
Hey Aris, can you see this? I taking pre-judgemental and bias potshots at you based purely off one video. Yeah you you #$%&
For me it was Tuesday. it is the interwebs. Just be glad this thread is on SRK and not 4Chan.
Shut up, the Gun Safety pinko commies could be listening.
I would punch Aris in the face, but he looks like he can take the hit like a champ. No so much that he is a sexist jerk, but to be fair it I going to punch someone’s face in the face I rather they not die.
Duh, I don’t want some stupid n00b or some filthy casual dirtying up my FGC.
This is the exact sort of troubling logic that I think makes the condemnation of niche communities for larger societal issues so problematic. Accepting the notion of a unified “FGC” only for the sake of argument, I wouldn’t deny that there are all sorts of -ists in the community, but I would deny the claim or implication that those beliefs originated in the niche community, and strongly resist considering the community in a vacuum; even hypothetically accepting the aforementioned notion of a unified FGC, it’s not like once someone starts playing fighting games, they become wholly disconnected from mainstream media. Yet, the more powerful the institution, the more pervasive its social influence, the less that is expected of it. Basically, people don’t want real change, they want to complain; it’s a lot easier to look like a feminist and carry the torch of social equality by lambasting some guys who play video games than by actually doing something about the more serious problem.
There’s a difference between being misogynistic in mind and being a sexual harasser in practice AND within the circuit. They are a problem and a menace if they offend and attack other people, being a racist, a mysoginist, homophobic or whatever.
I always think of these things as who’s trying to get the edge, when it’s competition time I zero in and cut no slack and give no fucks I want to beat you and beat you bad. Outside of that If I know you or you introduce yourself and are cool I don’t mind talking to people at events at all. But giving a girl accolades or taking it easy is stupid. If she is there for competition fuck her up give it your all. If someone does something smart comment on it.
In regards to Aris, he’s Aris I think he’s funny and he is an off color commentator he does certain things for shock value and comedy as well as to get into your head. The thing with Aris and Miranda is between them and has been dealt with.
In regards to that womans story of taking on the FGC… ok old man rant in coming… BITCH you got it easy in my day I had knives pulled on me in arcades it wasn’t thunderdome but it was alot rougher than it is now! I had drunks come at me for a real fight and I saw two crack heads beat the shit out of a ms pacman machine because bitch owe me money with them big lips! it was just the way it was. All I wanted to do was play my SNK and Streetfighter but somedays the arcades had other plans. You are getting shit because they don’t respect you! MAKE THEM RESPECT YOU! BEAT THEIR ASS IN FRONT OF THEIR FRIENDS! MAKE THEM QUIT! You earn respect, you don’t just get it, that goes for anyone. This fatass in this lecture fuck him and his bitch tits! He talks out of ass!
As far as Yipesisms go ITS JUST YIPES!! There is no hidden meaning hes a good player and a hypeman and a damn good one! Debate!? You want the true meaning of Yipesism fat boy lecturing? Ask him! Anyone who knows the answer will look at you like the fool you are. The Yipes thing has been analyzed for no good reason there is no reason to analyze it at all and its beginning to turn into some Paul Bunyon(sp?) and Babe shit. I love hearing peoples theories who are too young to know and it is funny to hear what they come up with. One Evo they really need to do a Jay walking segment and ask people what Pringles and Mango sentinel are and then post all of the responses on the big screen so that Penny Arcade/Kotaku/ and people like bitch tits can see how foolish they really look.
Sexism is a problem with culture as a whole, not just the FGC. It permeates everything, games, film, sports, business. Singling out FGC and cherry picking specific moments to serve an agenda is bullshit.
Not to beat a dead horse but why didnt the girl just tell Aris to fuck off? Lol like why take it then turn around and cry sexual abuse. I’d just imagine a girl gamer having a little more backbone.
