Dignity caught on tape: Dudley Video Thread

@Logan,

When you say counter his, you mean s.HK buffer into EX MGB? I have tried this at a certain point when I was using Dudley, and to be honest, I would get sweeped every time on reaction by good players. You have to understand I am not playing randoms on xbox live. The competition in new york city is fierce. Everyone in these tournaments is a killer. You have to go through the likes of emp members, team spooky members, the new jersery crowd fyc ryder, marlin pie, kdz , as well as top players in new york city, chris hu, henry cen, mikeg, so forth and so forth.

I mean to use dudley is tough enough, to use dudley againts these players that mainly use top tier characters and stricly counterpick you when things don’t go their way is obsurd. You won’t win with just one character in these tournaments over here.

But all an all I put up a good fight considering.

As for the secondary character I am thinking of going with a lame character, Balrog, guile, etc. Not sure yet, I was testing Akuma for a bit, but huge difference in health which I am not so used to since Dudley is a tank, and akuma is like a scooter.

Either way, when it comes down to it for a tournament, I probably would switch back to dudley when I lose my first match… then again who knows tournaments make you do stupid/crazy things. :wow:

Point and case.

Mistakes made:

  • Empty duck, knowing its unsafe.
  • Unsafe block strings, jab jab s.hk lk duck upper
  • Dropped combo in crucial point in match during stun. Jump HP, cr.HP, s.HK xx EX MGB, it’s funny because I land his combo 98% of the time, especially since I plink, duno what happened there.

Lessons Learned:

  • If you have the lead, sit back wait for opponent to make a move, don’t go for the kill unless they are mind fxcked.
  • Stop going for empty ducking in the middle of the screen, you can simply hold forward to gain ground.
  • Treat Dudley as if you are Bison, finish all blockstrings with safe LP.MGB, after blockstring is blocked, you should be close enough to cr.mp > lp.mgb for addition chip damage.

Everyone here probably saw this already but I figured I’d post it here anyways since it will inevitably be pushed off the front page.

… so awesome D=

I think you have analysed your match-up pretty well. All of the mistakes you point out here are the ones I picked up on too. If you’re going to use Empty Duck in a blockstring, remember that only after Stand HK can you not be thrown afterwards. As you say, LP MGB is the correct ender to use after a cr.MP.

Some notes of mine for you, although they are more match-up specific:

  • Too many jump-ins. Against Ryu, I literally do not jump unless I have him knocked down, or if I think he is going to throw the fireball. And even if I do think he is going to throw a fireball, if I do end up eating a DP as a result, I tell myself off. Dudley has some of the best jump-ins in the game, but there are still some characters that you cannot really jump-in against. Ryu is one of those characters. This game is not 3S, and you must be disciplined in SSFIV. It’s hard for all of the Dudley old-boys to adjust to this engine, but we must all learn to adapt ;).

  • Fighting at the wrong range. When watching this match, the most obvious thing to me is “why is he fighting from so far away!?” Chris’ Ryu is literally full screen of 3/4 a screen away and you are just sitting there, or throwing some pokes out. From that distance you must walk forward straight away. Every and any time Ryu gives you the chance to get forward to move to just outside of cr.MK range you must take it. Many times you would advance and Chris would just jump back or walk backwards to make more space. But yet you just stand there or move slightly towards him. If he jumps back, dash or command duck in. If he starts walking forward, walk forward with him (keeping out of cr.MK range though). As a result, throughout this entire match, you feel that Chris owns the match, because he can for the most part dictate the space and distance you were fighting at.

  • Footsies. Not good enough for a match-up against a high level Ryu player. You must block low against Ryu a LOT, in fact my mantra against many shotos is ABC - Always Be Crouching. Once your opponent clocked onto the fact that you were standing up too much and at the wrong distance, that cr.MK came into play and as the match shows, it was used to devastating effect.

Overall Liquid, you’re a good Dudley player. Your execution is generally superb and it’s a shame that the one time you made a mistake ended up costing you the round despite a commanding position. Your pressure and mixup game is also impressive, as is your defence and anti-air game. You even chose the right Ultra for this match-up (in my opinion anyway).

What you need to work on, at least in this match-up is the spacing and footsie element. The way I play this match-up is to get right up to cr.MK range and “dance the footsie dance.” I want Ryu to throw his cr.MK out so I can cr.MK / Stand HK / cr.MP xx MP MGB / Stand HP his poke on reaction, giving me my in and allowing me to dictate the match and play it my way. I just didn’t see you get to this range enough times and mix it with him, trying to lure him into the mistake. Many Ryu players also like to use the cr.MK xx Hado tactic to keep pressure on when playing footsies, and this allows Dudley to gamble on a Focus Attack after the cr.MK which will allow you to dash in and punish with cr.LP x 2, Stand HK xx whatever if you got the read.

However, I rate your Dudley, and as you mention, the tournament scene you play in is very competetve. Despite all of the things I have commented on, I wonder how I’d fare over there… I would assume not too well, lol.

Also, I must say that I felt for you in that second round, but that’s the risk with the cr.FP -> Stand HK combo, it’s a one framer and arguably not one that should be used in tournaments. It’s up to you whether or not to use it, but I think in that situation, against a good opponent in Chris Hu, you should have just stuck with a regular Stand HK combo. It all comes down to player confidence I guess. Had you have landed it though, I can appreciate that your own confidence would have been sky high and it would have shaken your opponent having wrecked him so brutally, however in tournaments it’s often better to play percentages than to over-complicate.

-You let chris hu jump all over you
-Trying to jump all over chris hu
-I’m not sure what your trying to do with cr.mp in your combos, st.rh is easier and leads to bigger damage.
-You let chris hu fireball too much. You should realize if you’re outside of his cr.mk range that ryu wants to throw fireballs. Also, if you’re going with ultra 1, make sure he KNOWS he can’t fireball.
-The stun combo was unnecessary. Scaling was already at 60%. Cr.hp>st.hk wouldn’t do much more damage than a more practical combo. For stuns i personally use fwd mk>st.rh xx lp or hp JU depending on where they are on the screen. No meter combo for a tiny bit little less damage. You can substitute ex mgb but imo it’s a waste of meter with that kind of scaling and I’d rather take the extra meter.
-DON’T end blockstrings with lp.mgb. All you end up doing is putting yourself at your opponents mercy, some characters can even punish it with super.

vs. Abel

Random EX MGB is a scrub tactic, the quicker you learn to stop completely, the better.

I don’t know how much lag there was in that match, simply because after you c.HK, a second later you did the follow-up which meant you were on autopilot or there was a lot of lag, but Abel was well… able to do the mix-up pretty well so I don’t know. If there was no lag, don’t play on autopilot, or your opponent will catch you sleeping.

My lord, just block, please. He was clearly hitting you, and you just kept pressing jab and strong. Wait and watch, then when the time is right, strike.

vs. Ryu

Wrong Ultra [Perhaps preference based, but I’ve had good success with Ultra 1]

Match starts, if you opponent is just jumping back, walk forward. It’ll make getting in with Dudley easier.

At 0:34, you just backed all the way up. No reason to do so, if your opponent isn’t doing anything, and your entire game revolves around getting in.

End of first round: Good Thunderbolt? That’s a question cause I think that those two words aren’t allowed in the same sentence. Nevertheless, good read.

If your opponent ever sits in front of you and focuses like that, just wake-up DP, scrubs don’t know that reversals break armor. Teach them.

You stole my combo: f.mk, c.lp, s.hk, EX MGB lol. It looks pretty.

Real Life Dudley

Best pokes and footsies I have ever seen.

When he hit that dude in the white with the rolling thunder, did it cause an untechable knockdown?

No rose tricks though, kinda depressing.

See response, thanks for critic

YouTube - ?FlashDudley’s Channel?‎

One of my friends linked me to this guys channel, he basically dedicated all the videos he created to Dudley. He takes top dudley players matches and puts them in a compilation video. He made one of my matches which was interesting, but i suggest checking out all his vids.

Im sure ive seen the links to videos of theese guys here but no refference to their channels first off, this french guy Mr.Kimokoan, really nice Dudley, and second One Handed Terror this guy was my “tutor” for Dudley so to speak, his Dudley live series is a must for beginers and he does a great job at explaining his move sets and some match ups.

here are the links:

A couple of Dudley matches from the Salty Suite got posted earlier last week, not sure if everyone’s had a change to see them yet so I’m posting them here.

Damn Hsien has some sick setups. Seriously like there was soo much smart stuff in taht match. I love the just sitting at cr.mk range trying to stuff cr.mk with his cr.mk… he knows he can duck a fireball, good shit. Also anti-air st.mk bait back dash and punish with f+rh, he could have almost combo’d off that soo good.

Despite losing, Hsien’s Dudley is probably the best I have seen. His footsies and spacing are excellent.

He really was interesting to watch. He lost because either Daigo was sandbagging, or he just didn’t change it up enough so he was downloaded.

Still, learned a few neat things. Like trying to bait the cr.mk with cr.mk then doing cr.lk to bait Daigo’s cr.mk then using his own cr.mk. Lots of OS or psychic f.fp on the backdashes.

Some endless matches I had with one tought Dudley…of course, Liquid. I didn’t upload them all because it tooks just TOO long to render the videos…so just uploaded what’s best from both sides. This is the first time I’m uploading to get my YT channel going

Sadly, me and East were in th esame lobby for 3 hours and NEVER fought…unless I’m blind and can’t find the video…anyways.

If you are going to crouch tech, be ready to follow it up with cr.LP st.HK xx EX MGB!

Neutral jump HK directly into Ultra 2 was nice Liquid!

I said the samething over the mic when he caught me with that nj.kh into U2, that was pretty good. I’m going to try to get the other videos, just that it gets boring waitinf for them to render, so another day I hope.

Also, this is a general statement about your playstyle: You focus a lot. Don’t do it as much. I felt like if Liquid or anyone else started fishing for them, they would have taken big bites out of your life free. Also, both of us need to anti-air properly with s.mk.

Edit Hey liquid, do you remember the jumpy Balrog [Tag: Love Phobia] we played the 2nd time you streamed? Everytime we got a knockdown on him, he would just back-up on wake up. I remember trying the c.lk>s.mk [option select: c.mk] and it didn’t work [probably late]. I remember you did a f.mk once, and I was just thinking: f.mk [option select: hp or EX jet upper] Does that work?
