Dhalsim's Matchups

Nice list Cen. I find Guile 4-6 interesting. I always think that Sim has a tough time against characters that can effectively turtle.

I think 4-6 vs Guile is a bit much, but close. Sim can out turtle guile.

After getting bored with Dhalsim and dumping him in a horrifically violent breakup, I’ve decided to go back to the little guy. Granted, I’m not a great player, so its not a huge hurdle to start using him again. Anyways, there are two matchups that generally seem to best me a lot online. That’s Cammy and Ken. Now, most of my issues with Ken involve me playing the scrubby ones (that’s what less than 1000PP does, I guess) and instead of trying to play a typical safe Dhalsim, I just kinda go in and land some good shots on him (unless the Ken is playing well, then I just stay the hell away). And honestly, I don’t learn anything from those Kens, except to not jump in when they can Shoryuken me.

The bigger issue is Cammy. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out what to do with her. Pretty much all the Cammy’s I’ve seen online get in on my really quickly and when that happens, I end up going into panic mode and just can’t shake her off. That happens when I play other characters, too, but Cammy seems to give me the most problems.

Maybe I should just stop playing Ranked matches…

Any general info v honda? It’s one of those matches that I know should be easier but I never play it so I get creamed too often.

Full screen fireballs trade terribly with headbutt.
All versions of headbutt are u2able on block.
b.rh far jump ins early
b.mp medium to close jump ins early (i know it sounds basic but his j.fp has good priority and is a terrible trade)
Blast if you’re not sure
Keep him out with limbs and throw fire when he has no charge.
Punish whiffed stop signs with fp
Honda is plus frames after a blocked hand slap, so don’t try to stick anything out after.
Stuff far butt slams with b.rh
Stuff medium distance butt slams with b.strong
Teleport away/block butt slams that are right on top of you.
IMO U2 is gdlk in this matchup.
A buddy of mine has a killer Honda and we did about 20/30 matches on Weds. I’ll see if I have any vids.

@ Adnan - imo honda is at least 5-5 if not in Sims favor.

Scamp summed everything up very nicely above vs. Honda. You’re not kidding that U2 is gdlk in this matchup - it punishes all normal headbutts (will not catch blocked EX headbutt though, as Satyamdas pointed out to me 2 posts below), and it’s easy to lure Honda into jumping over an ex fireball if he has low health to bait him into a U2. Naturally, block all headbutts with a free fp (and roundhouse slide kick reaches too — more damage but you likely don’t wanna stay too close to him). Also, if you’re unsure if you can counter a butt slam with an aa, just short slide at the last possible second and go for a throw or for a b+hk, you’ll either tech his throw attempt or get a little spacing with your blocked b+hk (which I generally follow with lk, lk, b.lk). Also, if you have a headbutt happy Honda, Tower is a great tool — after a few missed (and punished) headbutts, he’ll be much less inclined to keep that pattern up and will likely start jumping in if you have a life lead. Also as Scamp mentioned, trading with Honda’s jump in fp is heavily in his favor, so if you have ex meter and aren’t sure if your b+mp or b+hk is gonna hit him, EX flame will win/is a better trade than an unsure normal. I say this is 5.5-4.5 Sim.

Can butt slam even be anti-aired? I mean sure you can wait for him to land and punish if he doesn’t hit you on block, but depending on the angle he comes at you, there doesn’t seem to be much you can do if he’s directly above you other than block.

I guess I might as well ask, but any advice on fighting C. Viper/El Fuerte?

C. Viper gives me the most problems because there’s no real safe way to anti-air her or attack her on the ground, especially when she has ex-meter. Is there really any time you can shut her momentum down during her block strings without teching a throw? Air burning kick seems to be completely safe on block for her, as well as her lp lightning DP in a block string (you just get hit by another DP coming up if you even try to attack her after one). You can’t be in the air for too long or at all when she’s up close or else you’ll get DP’ed. You can’t be on the ground for too long or she’ll put you in block stun with EX-seismo and attack you in the air in a way you can’t anti-air her at all and instantly close the distance. Her moves up-close beat your pokes completely. Plus I noticed it’s much harder to land U2 on her when she’s crouching compared to other characters (even Sagat U1 goes over her completely at times).

Not quite sure about Fuerte though. It’s kind of the same thing, am I suppose to stay mid-range the whole match and predict his split-second movements completely (full range, I can get body splashed full screen whether I’m jumping or blocking on the ground). Plus I can’t really tell the difference between him doing the grab splash or the actual attack.

I’d have to agree though, Abel, El Fuerte, Viper, and Rufus are the only 4 match-ups I really can’t figure out :/, but I’m pretty solid against every other character I play against.

EX headbutts are not U2able, and I think the matchup is 5-5, or if anything it is slightly in Honda’s favor, 5.5-4.5 Honda at most. Super aggressive Mike Ross type Hondas are able to get in and do big damage despite your best zoning, and a good turtling Honda is a nightmare to try and do damage to, while of course being careful not to get your limbs hit by headbutts.

I never knew this! I stand corrected  I know for sure that I’ve heard otherwise, but it’s good to know! The only time I have troubles with super aggro Hondas is when they spam butt splash over me repeatedly, and when I tele away I’ll get headbutted on reaction — generally speaking, that aside, I don’t have many troubles with Hondas (and I’ve fought a good amount of’em). shrugs

Speaking of match-ups (besides the obvious ones, of course) — how do you Sims fare against a quality rush-down Cammy? I often have a pretty rough time against cannon strike spammers, esp when in corner proximity. She’s no Rufus or Viper, but she sure as hell is not an easy victory (again, when playing against an above-average opp).

I think that’s easily 6-4 Cammy. She’s tough to zone and she has a great rush-down. I struggle mightily v Cammy. Oddly enough, my friend that mains Honda uses Cammy as a number 2. Although I didn’t capture any Honda vids from our last session, I know I have at least one vs. Cammy. I’ll post it up tonight.

Cammy is a bitch, ferreal. Luckily she can’t do much against downback, just get good at teching. I have a hard time chosing which ultra because her dive kick can get her out of either.

Not sure if it’s the best option, but I use u2 and try to bait cannon spikes/drills with jump teleport shenanigans.

These aren’t supposed to be good, this is just how I “fight” Cammy.

Good shit, Scamp! 01:13 in is a classic example of U2’s reach… that’s like 80% of the screen!

I agree with most of your matchups, Ryan, but I think vs. Cody is 5-5, and I think both Juri and Adon have a 5.5.-4.5 edge over Sim.

Then again your Sim is crazy better! That’s just my $0.02. Everything else is just about spot on.

Why does Vega feel free if its only 6-4… I’v played many online vega players and I feel one of the best I’v played is on my FL(best I’V played)…lol anyways I feel like I struggle a little with Bison who is my main. Then switch to Sim and he feels kinda free, even with that damn kara grab mixup and what not.

And why does it feel like a mashing Ken is so fucking hard to beat? Maybe I need to integrate hp FBs more into my game?

There aren’t that many good claws out there, but when you run into one you’ll realize why It’s 6-4 or 5.5-4.5.

Mashing Ken’s suck b/c their dp recovery seems like the best in the game, I.e. It’s more difficult to punish a Mashing ken than a Mashing ryu.

I’ll start compiling gamertags of quality Vegas I come across… I’ve fought a coupla 10k+ BP Vegas who DESERVED those points. I don’t mean to be repetitive from other Sim threads, but this is EASILY one of my least favorite matchups. I’ll take Abel, Elf, Viper or Rufus before a really good Vega. Any day.
