it doesnt work. it seems that blanka isnt high enough off the ground for it to work.
Well, back + RH has okay range and beats blanka ball. You probably already know that but I thought I would mention it anyway. You’re gonna tag them if they tried to stop right in front of you and you timed it right. The only time it doesn’t work is if they landed way in front of you but that should be obvious since Blanka will be travelling considerably slower.

anyone been working on the matchups vs the console characters?
I haven’t played too much yet, and mostly vs zangief and fei long. gief is an obviously bad match up and I feel like fei long isn’t in dhalsims favor either since fei long has so many good ways to get close to sim:
-
Throwing out rekkas seems awesome for him at the right range. beats lots of stuff and is safe on block.
-
Chicken kicks seems good, especially EX ones since they have invul on startup and strange hitbox later on. even combos into hp, rekkas.
-
His focus attack is damn fast. I often experience my limbs getting absorbed by armor and then get hit. maybe this is just a scrub problem I’m having right now. anyone else experienced that kind of problem?
You really shouldn’t let your limbs get hit with a full screen focus attack.
You should always try and have a jab fireball out in front, before you try and poke from a distance.
Far low punches go right under his focus attack, rekkas, and chicken wing, and they’ll go under his dp unless he happened to press it with extremely lucky timing.
This means you are being to predictable with your pokes. You’ll need to mix you attack patterns up a bit.
I don’t get FA’d at full screen but too often at closer to half screen (where it is harder to consistently have fireballs out). but I don’t experience that problem too much now.
I also noticed you can reversal punish his rekkas with super.
sigh!
Getting backed into a corner by Gief is totally one sided. I took 'Sim to the 2nd Round GameStop tournament Saturday and no less than 1/2 the players used 'Gief.
Keeping him ranged is a tough but measurable battle unfortunately one knock down and your fighting an uphill battle.
Jumping strong works nicely, thanks for that info.
What is the best option when cornered and having to stand up.
Lariat beats pokes, 360’s beat blocks and can grab you after pokes even if you link Yoga Fire. Is db=forward XX jab-yoga Flame a viable choice?
First post ever on here, but I know plenty after playing for 2 whole days with Dhalsim.
Dhalsim against Zangief really isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. You need to make good use of Dhalsim’s medium kick as a partial anti-air so that you can push them back a little right after they jump immediately or right when they’re close to landing, then strong fierce punch. Slow Yoga fire’s and strong punch fierces also work very well one after the other once the fire hits them, but never try that when you’re in the middle of the screen, ever. Always stay long range from Zangief. If Zangief is jumping and he’s about to land right in front of you, that’s when you really want to use Yoga catastrophe or Yoga stream cause they’ll have no chance of blocking it (but you need to be quick about it or else they may land before the hit even registers and he will piledrive you). However, you may be at risk of getting hit by a strong fierce kick. Just don’t be too hasty with your attacks in the air so that your limbs don’t get hit by the spinning Lariat, just attack him with strong fierce punch when you’re on the ground when he’s doing the lariat. And also, if he ever get’s close up, keep on jumping back away from him and poking with Up + fierce punch and never stop jumping or else you’ll get caught by a pile driver, you’d be suprised how easily they can get it on you and it’s better to get hit by a spinning lariat than that >__>. If you get caught in a corner, jump over him (yeah you’ll risk getting hit by lariat), but whatever you do, teleport the hell away from him and get out of that corner and don’t get piledrived or Busta’d and commence the keep away game again. It will take practice to get good at this match up though so be patient ^^. Also, never stay close to him when he’s getting up.
I have plenty of trouble fighting against M. Bison, though the M. Bison I fought was really good (someone who went by Riot something :x). Kept on doing cross overs (I think that’s what they’re called?) against me when I was against a wall or doing some super nice combo’s with poking and that somersault skull driver and it’s really hard to keep him away with his Head press that instantly brings him next to you safely. Yoga flame upwards rarely seems to work.
Sorry, but I’m still trying to learn the abbreviations <.<, I only got into SF4 a few days ago, but I played my brother a lot and I have a fair amount of knowledge on playing decently. Took me a whole day to play somewhat decently with Dhalsim.
pretty shitty situation that you just listed against gief in the corner and grounded. first thing, dont panic. You have a few options here, but if possible try to predict the grab off tick setup in the corner into jump back roundhouse, b+forward yoga flame/super if you have it. Both the jumping roundhose and b. roundhouse in the air beat lariats.
If you see lariat, mash rh slide or rh trip
if you dont wanna risk jumping and you know gief will spd, you can try yoga tower to avoid the grab and punish accordingly. But you can’t do it on reversal frame. Or you can try teleport. Unfortunately none of these options are really very safe and they can all be punished hard. Basically vs gief, you cant give up any ground to him and you dont want to get knocked down. It’s not a bad matchup by any means but you def gotta be on point to not get randomed out by lariats or exgloves.
general strategy vs bison imo: you gotta space him with fireballs from full screen (when he’s 3/4ths length of the screen, try not to throw fireballs so much since he can punish you on reaction and stick to ground game/random jumps. dont wanna instant teleport without setting up a trap since he can mash roundhouse on reaction to your teleport. but at 3/4ths screen range you can bait him to jump pretty easily into your b+rh or b+strong XX yoga fire/EX upflame. If he crosses you up, try to slide away omtp grab or jump away.
best counter against headstomp is jump strong from full screen btw
any opinions on how to keep Gouki away?
he is the only character i have problems with
keep Gouki (Akuma) away? That is usually not a problem. Instant air teleport backwards into air Strong or air Fierce. Sim has really good close pokes to keep pressure off. Use cr.strong, cr.forward or forward slide(has frame advantage). Most Akuma players want to spam fireballs from a distance which works in Sim’s favor.
really? good to know. Do they beat lariats on start-up or do they beat at the end of lariat animation? I would think jumping back b+RH would be open invitation for 360 since you will have soooo long to fall back down that Gief will recover and have time to actually think about what he wants to do.
mind breaking down what hes doing a little bit more? then i could give you a overall breakdown of what to do in this match. I think this match is slightly in Akuma’s favor though.
You have a few options to get out of demon flip setups.
If he does a EX demon flip raw, EX Yoga Blast (if you dont have time) is pretty good, or you can slide under -> throw, or b. strong at certain angles. jump strong also counters this at certain ranges too.
up close i would try to mash cr. jab, cr short, b. short, b. forward into any kind of dashing away motion. It’s also difficult to deal with his stand RH at close range, I would advise being patient and not trying to dash back too much since you will get smacked in your dashing back animation. If you are at the very tip of the range of Akuma’s stand RH, you can focus the 2nd hit and hit him when he recovers. Or you can go for a bigger punish (if youre on point) if they space the RH incorrectly, you can duck the 2nd hit crouching (1st hit will make you block), and punish with b. fwd super. You’ve gotta really be on point though.
Air FB’s are a pain but can be punished depending on range. slide under them sometimes and stand fierce in recovery when hes coming down, try to air to air him with j. strong also. If you guess right you can teleport thru his air fb as well and punich - but the timing is tough. You’re basically taking a guess and putting yourself at risk here too but the payoff is potentially huge.
Of course you can always try to zone the match with fireballs, but you have to watch out for EX Demon Flip on reaction to yoru fireball game, it’s super quick and will go fullscreen.
I try not to slide too much on offense in this fight either, since fwd slide only gives you frame advantage from max range anyway and they can always spam reversal even if theyre at disadvantage, close range is not where sim wants to be
Both versions of RH beat the lariat anytime, its really good. Of course the corner is not the best place for Sim to be, but in that situation when you are cornered, jumping b. rh is probably one of your best bets since they will most likely mash lariat expecting to beat you and you will get beat. Of course they could try to counter it by spacing you out of course but it’s not like youre in the best situation to begin with
great thread guys.

I see that a lot of people have trouble beating Zangief. There is no reason to. Here are a few vids that show you what to do when faced against the Red Cyclone.

Are sim’s fierces that much different than Seth’s? With Seth I can beat any of zangief’s specials cleanly with standing or jumping fierce. Perhaps its sim’s jump speed?
Ed Ma if officially my favorite Dhalsim player, mostly because his style is close to mine. Whenever I watch Dhalsim match vids, it always pisses me off at how much Dhalsim players jump and teleport. Whenever you jump or teleport you lose whatever positional advantage you had. So you should only jump or teleport when you’re in a bad position, but most Dhalsim players just do it for the hell of it. Ed Ma was very reserved and only jumped or teleported when it was ideal. Such as when Gief empty jumps and is out of range for your b.HK but in range for his 360, that’s when it’s appropriate to jump.
There’s really nothign wrong with jumping a lot of teleporting, as long as you have some kind of setup in place. Me personally, I tend to jump up and down a lot, I agree that teleporting to them hastily is generally a bad idea though.
But regarding the Edma match, of course youre gonna be really reserved against gief considering his lariat beats your fierce, cant teleport at him ever cause of lariat etc etc so its not surprising he played that way XD
