thanks I appreciate the response. Ive been playing a lot in training mode with the hitboxes on and ive noticed some big improvements. I do watch a lot of video and rewind certain things to see what exactly happened that led to sim being able to do what he did. With dhalsim it seems like every character needs to be fought differently even a certain way in some instances and learning each matchup will be what takes the most time for me. I figured it would be a tough learning curve for Sim and im expecting tons of losses before the wins start to rake in.
there is so much good discussion here.
sweet poison: everything sjv said but especially fb more. there were a few times thelo was in invincible range but its free damage for sim with honda jumping in from far away. force hondas to wait on the other side or jumpin punishably (is that a word?). every time hes’ close ( ie within hhs range) is crap. you had him beat most of those rounds.
vs guile:
guile are easy for sim. i didn’t watch those vids but really there’s 2 ways to beat him:
-
outfb him and make him jump in to get beat down. even if it trades he has to get in again. def. jab/strong/fierce/fwd, and if in a real pinch short works pretty well on this game. in fact, guiles jump-ins trade and hit cleanly better in this game vs sim ( and anyone else?) in hdr than st. annoying, and prolly why we’re seeing more of this match.
i) did i say fb him? nothing much more deflating for a guile is to precisely jump in to only fall on the flame.
ii) maybe guiles jump ins are better b/c sirlin wants us to air flame more. haven’t tried it yet. -
the other way is to get real offensive and short drill almost every time he fbs. , throwing out early low off. strong fierces. but that’s all pretty risky. i actually believe sirlin removing the whole cr off. medium hit vs guile fbs was a good thing; sim doesn’t need that priority in this match at all. attacking guile is no fun for sim mainly b/c the flash kick, st jabs keep sim out. don’t fall behind in life vs him or just prepare for next round…
the first way is best but…it really boring. i will lose to guile out of boredom throwing fbs. cause i know if i was awake theyd die.
blanka is a whole other post. i believe him and boxer are sims worst enemies on hdr.
if cammy isn’t stringing into her hooligan… you have a lot better chance at winning. i haven’t seen him play, but i bet mr jangara does it all the time. we should make a table of which hooligans get beat by particular sim aa’s. its all connected.
back to my homework…argh!
Word. The learning curve is long and be prepared to lose a lot. Wins NEVER rake in with Sim. There will always be a pian in your ass around every corner. Have Fun! -fatboy
fatboy great games last night. And thanks for me being the guy to represent Sim in the room.
Well I’m feeling much better facing Honda but it seems the Sumo splash is Sim’s achilles heel. Even though I can poke it out of it using the jab punch, it still allows Honda to come in and close the gap and come back with an even deeper sumo splash or go into HHS, ochio tick throw, etc.
Cammy. Man I am starting to believe that matchup maybe Sim’s worst. She seems faster than Chun Li and doesnt have to play hit and run against Sim. Any ideas on how I could have played that better? I was getting so frustrated with that match.
Blanka. It seemed when I kept you out I was okay but once you starting the jumping over with light kick and the hop into the bite. I even knew you were going to bite but I couldnt reverse it.
Ryu. What’s with all the DGV clones? It seems more and more Ryu’s and Ken to are now using the late hurricane kick to get in on Sim. The Ken players do it and go into the knee bash which allows him to cause havok and great guessing game. And Ryu I am starting to think is more 5 to 5 as well as he really has just as many weapons as Sim if not more. He can dash, has a move that can hit you low from standing as well as high, great super, shoryuken, one hit hurricane which if you dont punish can lead to a throw.
Anything else you could think of I could possibly improve on for any of those matchups?
Anyways great playing and watching you.

Honda is tough. You have to hit him a whole lot more than he hits you. Sim needs to make as few mistakes as possible because he has to work so hard to close any deficit in life. SJV, hit it out of the park on his Honda write up. Other than learning to beat the other player in the head, there isn’t anything really major add to his write up.
Cammy. Most Sim players see to have trouble with this match up, not to mention I play Sim so I know where to exploit the match up. You have to punish Cammy’s jump-ins, look for the animation on the HC and punish, and MUST teleport away when she is rushing you down.
Blanka. This match is much like the honda match up. You have to hit him a whole lot more than he hits you. Sim needs to make as few mistakes as possible because he has to work so hard to close any deficit in life. If I may add one thought, you followed up your drill with another jumping attack 75+% of the time. I would do this less often. In many of our matches I looked for the second jump, and would V-ball up for a knock down. Mix up the up close game a bit more. It would have helped you pull out a few more W’s.
Well, he could always learn some Ryu.
I’m mostly joking, but it’s always another option if you’re having trouble in the Sim/Honda matchup.
gian plays ryu. i wonder why. ryu makes the honda and chun matchups much simpler. and a better super to use vs rog. to counterpick or not to counterpick, that is the question…
Well I agree the matchups can be difficult but I intend on figuring the matchup. Like I said earlier I’m on a mission to have one of the best Sims. Whether I reach that threshold is another story.
Quick question, the only way I lose to blanka is they jump in with short or medium kick. Follow up with a two hit combo and go to the bite. HOW DO I REVERSE THIS?
Oh and here is my latest battle with Thelothegreat again from the World Warriors League. I actually took a match this time. I have to say this guy only jumped in once with a regular normal. Every time he advanced it was with the sumo splash. I just have to focus more and watch when it comes out. I’m getting better though.

I’m not giving you any tips against Cammy since I don’t need you kicking my ass Here’s what I think works in these matchups, though keep in mind you’re a much better Dhalsim player than I am.
v. Cammy
Don’t throw random punches, I always wait to drill. This match is hard for you due to 'Sim’s slow speed. Use st. lk alot against the jump-happy Cammy’s, most of them forget to just walk forward.
v. Honda
What you want to avoid is using Yoga Fire to zone, since his jab headbutt can be a problem. Use cr. jab to counter his headbutts. Be very careful when you use the move, and also rely on flames more so he can’t headbutt. On headbutt recovery you can do whatever you like with those long limbs. I think jumping back + fierce can beat his splash? Also, use Dhalsims drills to make long jumps and then evade Honda at the last second (ex. if he headbutts, you j. lk, and so forth). This is all based on my limited experience, so try it and see if it works.
v. Guile
cr. mp is your best weapon, and your FB game is superior to his due to the charging. Mix flames with fires on his jump-ins, and use cr. mp to stuff his booms. You can drill on reaction but I think Guile’s boom recovery will save him.
v. Ken/Ryu
Keep a distance and mix flames alot with fires to stuff hurricanes and jump-ins. St. mk also stuffs hurricane kicks. As for Ken getting in with knee-bash…well, at that point you’re probably screwed. My only advice would be to use your superior throw range, or try a fierce slide to escape.
Hope I helped :S
^^^^Thanks man. It’s just a matter of playing the matchups enough.
Now for all my yoga bretheren, check this out. As I have stated I am really trying to be one the best Sim’s out there. That means no complaining about matchups, saying one is worse than another, etc. So the last few days I have been playing with Sim but by not using fireballs, flames or supers. You might think it is crazy, it was at first, but it really has helped me tremendously.
Yes Sim’s fireballs is part of his arsenal and strategy. But what this has done for me is allow me to figure out other ways to fight people. It is making me learn how to use and figure out what normals cancel out certain moves. I am learning to utilize my drills better and ultimately I hope I can get better with my throws.
At first I thought this would be impossible but then I thought about it half of the cast does not have fireballs and they are able to win matches. Dhalsim truly does have a ton of weapons at his disposal. I’ve been playing people and they have been totally thrown off by this approach. I had one guy said you need to throw fireballs (my mic was off so I didnt reply). He then said well I am just going to throw mine at you. Hello Dhalsim has moves to advance whether it is walking, drilling or teleporting. I beat him and he was just livid. I played a honda player and granted he was no Thelo or Mad possum, eamegaman but he was still good. He was confused and I was countering everything we was throwing at me. It made me stop jumping as much and I was much more alert as what was coming at me. My best find was playing Chun li without throwing a fireball. Since I wasnt doing that I had more time to do moves after she threw hers. It allowed me to get closer and punish her without getting hurt. Again when Dhalsim tries to match fireballs against her, she ends up jumping towards him and either Sim gets hit or he blocks but then gets hit with chip damage from a lightning kick. Again I am not saying fight her the whole match that way but again I learned a ton doing this.
Look I’m not saying this is the way to play Sim but I assure you, you can get a ton out of playing this way. I’m also learing why and how I am getting thrown which is because I was always in a crouching position after a certain attack. Also Dhalsim’s yoga fires can be deadly to him at times due to the start up of the animation. You just have to be smart about sending them and have a plan.
Anyways enough of my rant but really you Sim players should try this.
I wholeheartedly agree and here’s why…
…I’ve seen videos of people playing Dhalsim who either know the ranges of his normals or they don’t. The people that know his ranges have much more success capitalizing on their opponent’s mistakes and countering their attacks. It’s just that simple. Since Dhalsim has some of the quickest ranged attacks in the game, it makes perfect sense to me that knowing exactly what those ranges are help you to respond correctly in gameplay situations.
The primary example of this that I’ve noticed…whiffed followups on connected :lp: Yoga Fires. Yes, I know…I love combos a little too much…but I’ve seen so many people whiff a st.:mk: when they should’ve used st.:hp: that I find myself shouting “STANDING FIERCE! USE STANDING FIERCE!!” at the screen. If I’m doing that…a normally fairly mild-mannered person with a great deal of patience, somebody’s messing up.
So, bottom line, don’t fall in love with one normal. Use them all. Dhalsim has so many good normals for different situations. He was debatably the best character in VST, at least in the top 3, and in HDR, he still has what it takes to still be frustratingly great.
Just don’t let me psychic :lp: DP you.
HOW DO I REVERSE BLANKA’S TIC BITE, when he comes in with a jumping short kick? And please do not answer with do not get in that situation. I had a friend last night for 30 minutes do that and I could not reverse it. It was to the point I was mashing strong punch and nothing. I was mashing fierce punch and nothing.
Here is my real issue. Everyone says that all tics throws can be reversed. Why then can I not reverse this?
Thanks
Forget the Noogie and just go for the Toss. Most of the time you should get it. If that doesn’t work, Super is pretty wonderful. That’s just one of those situation where you need to time Dhalsim’s throw perfectly.
Yep. Also, don’t mash Fierce, try to time it. Dhalsim and Blanka have the exact same throw range, so you CAN reversal throw him with the Fierce. As for the timing, you have to hit the button as soon as you come out of block stun.
What helps me, and this may not help you, is to think of combo timing. Combo strings are meant to keep you in block stun. Example: Blanka’s j.Short, cr.Short. If you time the cr.Short too late, it won’t be a combo right? Try to time your Fierce with Dhalsim just a LITTLE later than Blanka would (hypothetically) time his cr.Short, if he was going for a combo. That way, you know you’re timing the Fierce when you come out of block stun. Hope that helped.
Unfortunately, no. Blanka’s throw range is bigger.
That’s only half true. You can reverse tic throws, but ONLY IF they are within your throw range. Blanka has a longer throw range than anyone else, except for command throws(SPD, etc). Good Blankas will jump in and then do a move or two to push you far enough away so that they can throw you but you can’t throw them. So, against really good Blankas you usually can’t counter throw.
Also, Sim’s MP throw was nerfed in HDR to have a smaller throw range. So, if you do try to counter throw use fierce instead. The fierce throw has a pretty good range, but it’s not quite as good as Blanka’s. Still, if the Blanka player’s spacing is a little off, you can sometimes get the throw.
So, what can you do? Well, almost every Blanka starts up with jump LK then does a move or two, then bites. The best ones will mix up which moves they do and if you counter throw them they’ll mix in combos instead of bites. So, your best way out is to do something during the jump LK, because if you block that things get terribly tricky. One way out is to MK slide under him so his cross-up LK misses you, then throw him when he lands. You can also use back + MP to hit him as he flies over, but it’s easy for this to miss or trade. You can also teleport or super, but that can be tough to do during such frantic action.
You are correct sir, my apologies.
Jeez, that data can be confusing to interpret. I was looking at Blanka and Dhalsim’s throw ranges when throwing Ryu, not realizing that the range is different when throwing diff chars. But Blanka outthrows Dhalsim by only 4 pixels, which is very tiny, and I’ve never had probs reversal throwing Blanka. But yeah, my bad.
Scroll down to the relative values instead.
A lot easier to read.
No, that’s EXACTLY the mistake I made. The relative values shows Dhalsim’s throw range as 93 and Blanka’s throw range also as 93, but that’s only vs Ryu.
Use the absolute values chart just above the relative values chart, and you will see that Dhalsim’s throw range vs Blanka is 94, and Blanka’s throw range vs Dhalsim is 99.
:wow: I know…that’s what happened to my face too.
Edit: I thought it was 4 pixels difference, make that 5 pixels
Blanka has 15 pixels over Ryu.
Dhalsim has 10 pixels over Ryu.
Basic Arithmetics Blanka has 5 pixels over Dhalsim.
