Dhalsim Video Thread

WOW! Excellent example of using pokes and normals to win rather than yoga fires…which can sometimes really hurt you…

 • Khanh

I find this in myself as well…and I eat tons of hurricane kicks…

I think I am going to try to incorporate more of this.

I just watched a few vids of a Japanese Sim (below) that used your same strategy to the max …and you can literally see the opponent wondering how the heck to handle it. Almost as if the opponent depended on the yoga fire to setup his own game. He seemed lost not seeing Sim fire back yoga fires… hahahahah

not working. :xeye:

hello everyone…i post to anounce u about the stream “show” there is in greece that we play street fighter with many good greek player live(with me including also)…from tomorrow at 9 p.m.(greece time which means gmt +2)…i dont know if i wrote it right but its +2 :P…
you also find videos of me and other greek players…thanks

Hey guys,

I wasn’t sure where to post this but since alot of people put up their own videos I thought I could as well in this topic.

This video is of me going up against Emblem Lord; he posts a lot on these forums and I just wanted to see how Sagats really are when the player who uses him has a high lvl of knowledge about this eye patch crazy character.

I have basically no experience with advanced Sagats so this was a huge wake up call on what goes on at upper levels of play.

I’d like to forewarn that the video i’m linking shows me getting abused every single match. I put up very few close calls of victory but Emblem yanked those hopes away every time shakes fist.

One thing (of the many) that I noticed is it’s really hard to poke EL, he managed to keep perfect distance while hitting shots.

If you guys can help me figure out what I need to keep Sagat at bay. I’d appreciate it.

Things I already know to fix:

 • Never jump away from a Sagat up close. His HK catches me everytime.
 • Sliding is only good if Sagat is mid action. If he is jumping towards me and is out of AA but inside slide I can slide and still be able to throw him.
 • I should use jump back fierce scarcely, EL caught me for the majority of those with a quick TK.
 • I shouldn’t standing FP more than once after I interrupt one of his Tiger Shots. He usually ends up doing an EX if i interrupt him once and I got caught in it everytime.
 • I shouldn’t slide under low tiger shots, yoga tower or jump works alot better.
 • I should stand block Tiger knee, while crouching it takes me another frame to get up to do anything so it goes in his favor (I think).
 • Never fireball mid range, EL tiger knees over them and my recovery doesn’t let me block.

There’s probably a few other things I forgot to mention which I know not to do anymore.

My close up game is awful. Everytime EL had me in a corner I was getting either overhead, low, or tiger kneed into block stun. My only option that I could see is block guess right and then try to poke or teleport to the other side and eat a hit or two. I couldn’t back lk > mk xx fireball at all or any other form of close up jabbing that usually worked. He would counter it with his arsenal.

What can you fellow Dhalsims suggest? (Aside from l2p)

I usually don’t play this bad, I think I was basically trying to think on the fly and that did not work out very well. Once I have better concept of wtf just happened to me I’ll be able to learn and execute better.

Thanks for your time and I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

Kageski

If tiger knee is predictable during the block string, you can LK slide under it and punish
It does become pretty predictable sometimes

hi kageski,

that sagat was pretty brutal, specially the last match. but not worries, im sure in time you will beat him. i have a few pointers that might help. im in no way an expert dhalsim, but i’d like to think i can hold my own. sagat is my highest win rates (as far as arcade version characters). console version, it’s fei long haha.

*you can still jump back when sagat is upclose, but i suggest teleporting backwards too at the same time. or better yet, just do a backwards iat and attack with mp or fp or just land.

*sagats thats likes to focus attack, i usually use iat more against these types of sagats. but instead of attacking, i just land and throw them.

*when they jump and use mp, that’s pretty hard to AA. i either slide under if i can or just backwards iat and mp or jump back mp or fp. from experience, if you jump back with fp, you trade hits, at least for me that’s how it goes lol.

*if they like to spam fireballs, just try your best to avoid them. jump and then down hk is a good move to use for faster landing, FA is good too, or use ex fire and slide followed by standing fp is good also.

*sliding under low tiger shots is risky as you mentioned, but it is a good move. just practice it. or like you said, just yoga tower. i usually just jump and then use d.hk to land faster.

*use a lot of ex fireballs, this will help you with your pokes or iat.

*try to use jump back fp when you can. most people fall for this.

*if you are trapped in the corner, try to teleport out when you find an opening. use your shortened pokes to get out of tight situations (c.sk, c.jab, c.mp, c.fp, or b.fk). use links to push them off and then teleport away. i know its easier said than done, but dhalsim’s close range game is pretty limited. imo, those are our best options.

*if they are bumrushing you, use ex yoga blast (d, db, b+2 kicks) to AA. works like a charm, even on wake up sometimes. i actually use this move quite a lot. only cuz lately, ive been finding opponents who enjoys rushing me hehe. im fine with that lol.

*around mid-range, just use your faster pokes (standing lk, standing or crouching mp, standing fk). limit the use of fireballs around mid range, or just teleport back so you can space yourself if you are more comfortable with a longer range game. when poking on mid-range, don’t use it excessively and don’t fall in a pattern. mix it up because they can always uppercut those or counter with their own normal (like ryu’s crouching mp).

*as hardc0re pointed out, slide under tiger knees when they get predictable and punish.

also, i wasnt sure if u messed up on the iat input and ended up doing regular teleport, but there was quite a few times you did regular teleport only during your fireball trap. not sure if you were nervous or just not that familiar with the input command, but i suggest practicing iat until you are close to 100% on it. helps a lot.

i know some of my tips may have been stuff that you know already, but i hope i helped in some ways. goodluck and keep us updated on your status against emblem lord =)

oh and also, you can do crouching fp to super for punishment. not sure if you knew that already.

Thanks for the response,

I’m going to keep all these tips in mind and practice them. It helps alot to know what I can do in each range vs. Sagat to get the optimal result. In regards to my IAT failing, I can execute it 99%, but that was just me being nervous because he was just all over the place and it was really hard to ‘think’ when i’m getting assaulted with different things constantly.

When it comes to jump back FPing, I tried but he never stopped hitting shots so I was trying to learn on the fly on when to use it. I’ll practice it more. I just found out mid range he won’t tiger shot much because i can stuff it…hmm nice.

As for the corner game, every time I tried anything I got countered but I’m gonna use more links and light hits to see.

Yoga blast is one of those abilities I have but never use haha, I gotta force myself to use it.

I’ll learn his string for tiger knee prediction and then start sliding under it, I like that idea.

Thanks alot for the advice, if there are any other things feel free to let me know.

no problem, remember to back dash poke with your faster pokes also hehe. yeah, in the end, it all comes down to execution practice and knowing what to do for any given situation. i’ve lost to a handful of sagats, but i have also beaten a lot of pretty good ones. to be honest, i actually have an easier time beating sagats than ryus. he’s so massive, you can just poke the hell out of him lol.

and oh yeah, ex yoga blast, get that in your system lol

If Sagat is throwing out tiger shots mid screen you can mess up his spacing by sliding even under the high shots just to get close enough to hit with a couple standing normals. I know you know this, but standing normals can reverse tiger shots on start up. Sagat players hate getting hit with back lk’s, back mk combos, because if you block after each one or after a couple there’s not much they can do. They usually wait for you to mid slide, and go for grab so they can tiger uppercut, or knee you. I don’t know like i don’t think Sim should fear Sagat up close. Once you start throwing out back normals into yoga sniper (or baiting uppercut with sniper), and safe sliding into him, and blocking his obvious tiger knee he becomes a big baby.

One of my Replay’s got uploaded onto Xbox live.

I went through the trouble to put in on youtube.

tomle your vids wer cool, too me it looked like you start off trying to either pressure them close up or deal with there attacks close up (which looked like it was hurtin) but then in the end you zoned from a distance and won, i particulary like the round were you used very few specials against ryu i havent tried this learning technique yet but it looks effective, when you did throw a fireball it looked like he wanted some more for a fireball game hehe. nice once again

Thanks. i wanted to test my new video capture device. How the graphic? lagging? or anything weird?

Ya i noticed he like jumping alot so i prefer avoid fireball. Most ryu on g1 only jump back and throw fireball, pretty easy to deal…

the videos are fine no lagging or anything weird, infact i was wandering what your setup was to record/play these. also do you have an VS balrog/boxer videos as i would like to see how you fight them i wouldent mind seeing other characters too =). good stuff and keep it up as i am and proballry other benefit from good player videos.

I will try have some good match against balrog and upload it next time, anyways…

nothing special about those match, just wanted show vs other character.

Kageski, your sim vs el’s sagat was pretty fierce. A lot of those matches could have gone either way. I’ll just throw out some tactics I use:

lk.slide xx HP Fire is your best friend in a footsie battle. Its great against someone that’s spamming FA.

Sagats head is so damn big, you can use high damage AIT combos much easier like j.b hk, b.hp, m.flame(or ex flame)

If he FA dashes every time your about to land an attack he’s not psychic. Delay your attack and wait for the FA dash before hitting him.

Thanks for the tips Carnage, I didn’t realize his head had a big 'ol hitbox for back hk. By AIT did you mean IAT or am I missing something here? And m.flame / ex.flame : how does that work into the fight with Sagat?

The FA dash is something I need to get used to but not all players do it - I even come across players who actually FA twice and absorb both pokes…I’m gonna have to learn to just psych them out and delay - good point.

Thanks for the advice again!
