Dexter - Season 6 (Renewed, Recharged, Refocused)

Had to quote myself, since Dexter got caught by Debra lol

Well, yeah, but they might never go back to those days.

I’m thinking, we’ve never seen someone who’s overall “better” than Dex. Every villain had him by the balls at some point, but he’s always come out on top in the end (except for season 4). I kinda want to see someone who has Dex by the balls for most of the season. Maybe even someone who’s in the same “business” as him, but is equal to or better than him in some major fashion. I don’t know what, and I’m talking in tongues here, but imagine Dex as Walter White and this new guy as Gus Fring.

…maybe that’s just my growing Breaking Bad fanaticism breaking out. It’s something though.

Or Dexter vs a really smart cop. Not miami metro sucky pd.

Already had that with Doakes, and to a certain extent, Robocop (forgot if his name was Liddy or something else). Maybe they could do that again, provided the outcome and the lead-up to it is different. If a really smart cop put some things together on his own without hating Dex first (Doakes) or being commissioned to do it (Robocop), maybe that’ll feel fresh.

But I was thinking either someone with legitimate leverage over Dex, or someone smart enough to make catching him a tough task. I think that would be relatively new. To compare, one of the best villains in Dexter history was the Trinity Killer, but he only lived as long as he did because Dex allowed it. I’d kind of like to see those tables turned. Maybe not a full 180, but enough to be compelling.

Rudy/Brian was far better than Dex. His only weakness was his fraternal compassion, ironically the only shred of humanity left in his soulless frame.

Oh. You’re right. If Rudy just wanted to off Dex, he could have done it.

Well, like I implied with the “cop who finds out” angle earlier, maybe it could be rebooted. Just have the guy (or girl) be better than or have some kind of leverage over Dex. And be unrelated to him, with no soft spot. This would probably work best as a cat-and-mouse thing where Dex chases this guy/girl.

Another possibility for something to freshen up the series is for something terrible happening to innocents that Dex is unsure whether he had a hand in. Maybe he kills someone who had hostages locked up somewhere, and they die as a result. Or some variation.

Well he killed that douchebag photographer who he later found out was innocent, that was glossed over pretty quickly though. If anything, that should’ve been as real turning point since he’s never made a grave error like this before. (as far was we know)

I think Louis could potentially be the best villain, because unlike the erstwhile nemeses Dexter has had, Louis has technology, proximity and Dexter’s modus operandi right at his fingertips via NetRangler.

Though this seems harsh, I mean REAL innocents. That photographer was a douchebag. It seems like a flimsy justification, but people really don’t care if you kill a douchebag on a TV series. Unless that dude was a character that was built up and you had sympathy for. That’s why you saw nobody really gave a shit he got over it in less than 1 episode. I think you’d need real innocents/victims in order to make this work.

It’s still a coldblooded murder on someone who didn’t do a crime, someone who was completely at the mercy of his captor. Seeing how the show is based on a “real world” perspective it’s pretty clear-cut Dex was way in the wrong.

When I said “people”, I meant people watching at home. Dex killed so many real bad guys that an innocent douchebag meant almost nothing to viewers. I’m trying to think in terms of what would be engaging for the audience to watch.

I think originally, this was supposed to be Quinn(sp? I don’t care). He was an outsider, his mind not clouded because he didn’t know Dexter at all. He was new, so he wanted to prove himself, it was all there. Then the smell of Debra’s incest seeking pussy clouded his mind after all, changing him into a pretty much useless character on the show. He has no more purpose there. His whole character is now part of the many -what a colleague of mine acurately described as- misdirections that are being used on this show now. (His fling with Debra didn’t have any huge consequences except for Quinn himself, and this sub plot between him and Batista also didn’t really go anywhere. Sure, it lead to Travis getting away once, but in the end it didn’t matter much at all.)

Misdirections exist in any show, movie or story for that matter. They’re fine and they can serve as little things to keep you on your toes, but now everything that happens in Dexter is a misdirection; sub-plotlines that go nowhere at all, “problems” that get in the way of the plot that are dealt with in one or two scenes, and huge fucking set-ups to clever or interesting ideas that turn out to just set up some kind of ridiculous semi-incest plot that turns part of the last couple of fucking episodes of the season into a crappy romantic comedy for no reason! /spoiler
Seriously, as soon as Debra " found out" that she “loves” Dexter (spoiler) she started acting like a generic, clumsy romantic comedy bitch. Why the fuck was that in there?! Who here didn’t think the psychologist was starting to put two and two together about Dexter, only to be dissappointed by the eventual outcome?

Some people have said that we’re expecting too much of the show now. That if we go back and analyze the first season, we will find problems too, but that’s the thing: Even if there were problems at all, we didn’t notice them. They didn’t get in the way of the overall story, logic and feeling. If they’re there, they’re certainly not as blatant as say… a mural of a demon with Dexter’s face to make a very stupid point that a character is angry at him. /spoiler (And don’t fucking tell me it later became a problem Dexter had to deal with, because he dealt with it in one scene, with a flimsy excuse in the scene before as to why it hadn’t been discovered yet and the solution was unrealistic and the whole thing was stupid.)

Not being able to top season 1 is not a good excuse for some of the shit that has happened here. You can almost hear the writers or whoever was making the decisions saying: “Hm, people seemed to really like the fourth season. It was probably all because of the ending. Lets do another shock ending and tell a story about whatever before it. People like shock endings. An ending that should have really influenced the entire fifth season, but didn’t, because we want to cram as much shit into these stories as possible now.”

So many things going on, the first half of the story is forgotten before the second half even had a chance to end.
Where art thou, Brother Sam?

P.S.: Speaking of useless characters…
Why the hell is that new detective or whatever even there?! The only thing we got out of him is we learned how to “flamingo” someone’s ass. He didn’t make any major discoveries, or did anything memorable. He was just there to remind us of the bible or something every now and then. Big deal.

You nailed it. I can’t think of one B-Plot or C-Plot that was worth my time over seasons 4-6. At least 4 and 5 (though 4 was way better) had better main plots.

Other than that, the thing I hate about the incest storyline is how unnecessary it is. It’s what happens when what should have been a misdirection (at the very best) turns into a main plot. Once the last minute of season 6 was up, I knew exactly why the storyline was there. It’s so Deb wouldn’t turn in Dex that easy. But they have so much history together. Do we really need Deb to be thirsty for Dex’s cock to believe she would have a hard time turning Dex in?

This. This on wake up. Reversal this. Lvl3 this. Thisu-maki-sen-pu-kyaku.
It’s as if they forgot what fucking show they were working on when they came up with that. And to think this season started with so much promise.
The horses, the killers, Dexter… it was all awesome. Then it slowly started to decay. Like when angel girl was very clearly and desperately trying to tell everyone not to come closer, and the dumb extra character was just like: "I’m going to totally ignore everything around me, even though at the same time I’m supposed to play it like I’m super alert."
I think in stead of religion, the real theme of this season was the death of logic and how far it can be drawn out.

Holy shit just finished watching Season 6 (downloadz ftw). Last minute finale surprised the hell out of me.

I do seriously hope the next season is the last though, I love this show but I do see it declining in quality very fast. I really wished whatever they had planned, they would have made season 5 the last one. They should have gone the Chappelle show route and ended it while on top. At least, thats what Dave did, took his best shit, made money and then ducked out.

IMO, Season 1 was awesome (but I hated the ending, long lost brother killer WTF? cmon) but Season 4 with Trinity was the best season. (And while im at it ill go ahead and confess that I think season 3 was the worst) Which is why I think season 5 should have been the last. Should have been a different story but ended the series with a bang. Having deb fall in love with Dex (if they went that route), finding out what he is, and most likely being the one to take him down.

Iono where the series is going at this point but it should end soon. I hate seeing a show/movie I got really really really into, start great and then slowly starts getting sour and then ends badly. Kinda like the Saw movies. The first one was sick, the second, ok…nothing special, too many victims, 3 redeemed it but it should have ended there. The rest was a trainwreck. (Although the original writers never planned a sequel to saw, but money talks…and they said they only wrote the scripts for the first 3 movies as it was written to be a trilogy and end. You can tell just by how 3 ended. Lionsgate bought the rights to the rest of the movies and look how that turned out. Sorry for ranting about that but you get my point.)

Season 6 really didn’t live up to expectations, mainly due to gaping plot holes.

I don’t think Dexter could ever turn out like the Saw series did. I remember watching the first Saw and loving it. Then it slowly evolved into less psychological thriller and more into just…horror with a weak plot. I think I watched the 5th or 6th one with a friend while drinking and we were just laughing our asses off the entire time because of how ridiculous it was. Comedy horror night in a completely unintended way.

Even if Dexter ends poorly, the overall series was still a great experience. They’ve degraded a bit on plot, characters and having (saying it again) gaping plot holes that just really puts a dent in the flow, but in no way have I ever thought “This is just ridiculous”. I always enjoy watching Michael C Hall play Dexter with his narration monologues, even if the rest might not be up to snuff at the time.

Edit - I miss Doakes.

Can’t wait! When does the series return?

Goddammit Dex, just tell her you’re a psycho…well, nevermind, the proof is on the table.

last season was kinda ass.

its like bunch of different writers worked on it and fucked shit up. dex magically knew where the fuck to find colin hanks all the time. it was just sloppy work. overall it was the weakest season IMO.

I liked s3 btw.
