DmC is a reboot which means the Non-Smoking Dante that you love does not exist anymore. This, in Crapcom’s/NT’s opinion, is the NEW Dante, aka, if you don’t like main characters that smoke then “we don’t care what you think”.
before DmC, it was never canon, not to my recollection, that Dante nor Virgil has ever smoked. The smoking IS NOT why fans hate this game. People hate this shit because it’s a fucking reboot of a good series that didn’t need it. Plus, Crapcom is outsourcing to an unworthy developer and using a “weak” western engine. Instead of expanding on a great series they’re destroying and repackaging it while thinking “the fans are going to buy it anyway because it’s Capcom”.

You know, I don’t understand why, instead of using canon-wiping “reboots,” companies don’t just pull a Marvel and make their own Ultimates-esque alternate canons.
I’d love to see an Ultimates-style Street Fighter, where Ryu and Ken are high schoolers, Akuma is a bad ass biker, and Dan has some sort of transforming gun. I AM DEAD SERIOUS DO NOT MOCK ME.
Anywho, this way, Capcom could have their DmC storyline and their original storyline intact and co-existent.

A lot of great games don’t sell well. Hell, pretty much any great game that isn’t Halo/Madden/Final Fantasy/Idolm@ster/some other stupid contrived unoriginal bullshit that caters to mouth breathers has a good chance of not selling well. We all know Capcom isn’t exactly the brightest company when it comes to making business decisions.

-1 for topic on sales. You can only sell based on advertising. word of mouth only gets you so far (see EDF series) - it has little to nothing to do with the premise of the game toward original or unoriginal. I could make the dopest rap algbum ever but if no one hears it…yeah.
