thanks for soldering my stick
I know Choi is a legend but I really gotta question him only playing SF4 for 1 month. I’m looking over the videos again and dude has some amazing combo that you only see experienced Ryu player pull off. For example when he finished off Ed Ma he did a crouching MK, to a shakunetsu hadoken, to the Ultra. I’m not saying that’s the most advanced combo, but it’s not something you see new Ryu players pull off with ease. Choi’s Ryu looked more polished than Alex Valle’s Ryu from the SBO qualifier. Again Choi is an amazing player, but there’s no way he’s that polished only after 1 month of playing the game.
a lot of those combos can be learned in just a few hours
There is a reason why John Choi is a legend. It’s not like SF4 is this whole new universe in the Fighting Game genre. Choi’s been playing at a high level since the 90s, is it so hard to fathom the skill level he’s at after a month of playing the game seriously? Listen to Ed Ma’s interview with Wheat, he gives a good explanation of Choi’s solid understanding of top level Shoto play. Plus, what does Choi really have to gain from the statement of playing for a month? He’s a legend already, doesn’t really need to stroke his ego or hype up his resume. I’m looking forward to his Evo matches.
Really? He’s the master at probably the most technical version of SF and you think he can’t learn how to do combos that really aren’t that difficult?
Really?
its not just an east coast thing and they are on the team because…they are in empire…lol
Emphy is not empire. -_-
There’s some dumb backstory to it.
wtf. that stuff is easy brah. i dont think a pro would find that stuff hard at all, could probably do it in like 1 hour if they wanted. and choi is not really a new ryu player. a new sf4 player but not ryu.
The main factor in Choi’s victories were not the combos he was pulling off. It had a lot more to do with his legendary zoning and footsies. Those two things have not radically changed from ST.
Zoning strategies where slightly weakened by FAs but not to a great enough extent where it renders the strategy without merit.
Now 3s IS completely different. Fireball zoning is impossible due to the parry.
I figured that combo out after a few days of playing, when the game was brand new… Choi gets the advantage of everything being figured out for him so he can learn that shit in just a few minutes, without having to experiment. it’s not a hard combo.
YJDK
He’s played the game for way more than a month for sure. That doesnt discredit him in anyway tho. The dude is and always has been king of footsies.
I don’t think that ja-rule nigga was that biased… I am pretty sure he saw team empire arcadia whup up on team ken i in winners finals… it was bound to happen again. I would agree it was maybe a little messed up to say, but the truth none the less…
My opinion about the commentators is you’re either going to love them or you’re going to hate them, but if they’ve sparked either emotional response, then they’ve done their job. Most match vids we see on the internet dont have any commentation at all, so to me even the bad commentators were cool.
PS: My apologies if I offended anyone this weekend during any of my segments, especially chunksta. I have nothing but mad respect for every player out there, just gotta shake things up sometimes.
Ponder: you’ve been doing this tournament thing for like, EVER. So I take your opinion in a much higher regard, and I completely appreciate your feedback. Myself, Robb, and the rest of the Devastation crew will definitely implement these ideas for next year. The livestream with djwheat was a great addition, but it was also the first time either parties had done something of this caliber. We’ll get it right next time I’m sure.
First off, thanks to all the staff for running a great tournament. I know it’s hard enough to run one tournament much less as many as you guys were running. Combined with the live streaming I’m sure it became a nightmare at times. Anyway, all in all, you guys did a great job. :clapdos:
Too many people to give shout outs too but I’ll do my best:
-
First of all the staff, I don’t even know exactly who was running this whole thing besides Jedirobb. I’m not sure who else was considered staff but thanks again for putting together this event.
-
Ryan/Cami thanks for letting me crash in your place. Those breakfasts were yummy. Sorry Slasher if I smacked you a few times, lol.
-
Floe, Justin, Fubar, Marn, Ricky, Abe, Sabre, and everyone else who I haven’t seen in awhile. You guys are basically the reason I decided to come anyway. Glad to get some games in with you guys, online sucks! :wgrin:
-
FlashMetroid for being hilarious. Too good.
-
Team GetYourTournament, thanks for the last minute ride home and the fun conversations in the car.
-
Choi, thanks for hypnotizing me with blue firey death.
-
Emphy, damn dude you are way too clutch. You are like the Daigo of America, no joke, no emotions! Come play SF4! Give it a second chance!
-
All the S Cal guys who came, I’ll see you this weekend probably at LOSF, haha. Speaking of which, thanks for letting me crash for a bit in your room MMDS and company.
Sorry if I forgot anyone, thanks again for a great event. See you guys all at EVO! :wgrin:
GS to all my peeps from Deva: Juicebox, Kiz, Xavier, Malcolm, Floe, Swoozie, and everybody else… i couldn’t make it but i’ll see most of ya at evo next month BABY!!!
Totally agree.
I know this doesn’t pertain to the fighting game portion, so if you don’t care about a non-fighter, just ignore this post.
Up front, I gotta say that this was the single best run Guitar Hero tournament I have ever seen. I’ve been to dozens at this point, and they usually have a problem one way or another, esp because the community hasn’t really standardized on a format. But I’d say that all the top players in this competition came out satisfied with the ruleset, and that’s hard to do.
However, the main (and only) gripe (and I know you know this jedirobb) was that for the finals, the players were called to come in at 8AM… and they were told they would be playing shortly thereafter. Six-seven hours later, at 2-3PM, they still hadn’t played yet because the streams were focusing on fighters and didn’t want to cut to GHWT yet. I doubt anyone in the stream cared to watch a GHWT match, so I guess I can’t blame them too much. But keeping the finalists hanging on for at least 6 hours not knowing when they were going to play was annoying to say the least - there weren’t many, but at least a few people wanted to see the finals match and they kept coming by to ask when it was going to happen. I finally went over to rob and asked to just forget the stream because honestly, who the hell was going to care anyway. I really appreciate that he wanted to do that for the game, but we were at a fighting focused tournament and the players knew that. They just wanted to be done with it and be able to go watch the other games matches (or go home) instead of hanging around the GH station staying warm.
Just thought I’d throw that in there as another example of the tournaments being dictated by the stream. Only these guys didn’t wait just 10 min, they waited for 6+ hours.
This is John Choi playing Street Fighter in France roughly 1 month ago:

He gets completely dismantled by Honda. What do you see?
- Attempted jumping strong, anti-air. What? This isn’t ST, fool!
- Missed combo attempts… l.jab, l.jab, (missed) ex hk. That’s not even the right combo!.
- No DP xx FDAC to get out of trouble, even with 100% meter. In fact, no FADC attempts at all. No use of ultra at all.
- Really bad spacing.
So, yes, John really has only been playing for 1 month. He’s just that good.
Thanks for the kind words. Don’t think that you guys did anything wrong at Devastation. The first time you try anything there’s bound to be a few problems. I think things went pretty well for a first try, but there are always ways to improve. Props again.
Yeah, but John Choi’s been playing for so long and has such good practice habits… I mean, I don’t think it’s insane that he got so good so fast, but man if it doesn’t speak volumes about him as a person and a fighting game player.
I’m still an Ed Ma fan till I die though. Ed Ma for evo!
Not for nothing, I was there at 7:30, and had to wait… The biggest problem was 90% of the players didn’t show up till after 10:30. I don’t know what time the rounds started, but it CERTAINLY wasn’t 6 hours. They still had to do all the brackets, thats why they asked the SF4 players to show up at 8 am. The stream for the finals started like 6 hours later, but that was on schedule.
I probably should have been clearer that I was talking about the Guitar Hero final. >__> There was only one match to play, and it took 6 hours before they finally said “just do it” and it was played off stream.
Again, it’s definitely the best run tournament I’ve ever been to, minus that one gripe about having to wait around indefinitely. It was an awesome event and I’m super glad that they decided to even have GH as a part of it
