i’ve never really put it into words as well as you did, but YES. And people write comments on our uploaded videos that socal SF commentary is too BIASED??? That’s honestly not the point.
and yes, djwheat is really good on starcraft, but fighting games not so much. The only two outstanding people commentating on the mic that really had good insight on the games were KillerKai, and Tristan.
I think this has to do more with the logistics problems of running a tournament than anything else. For a tournament of this size with multiple games things like this are bound to happen. So to synchronize that with the stream staff while having the foresight to see these logistics problems is asking a bit much especially considering this was really the first we’ve seen of a stream with such high production value – other than UFRAGTV’s stream of SBO Quals. Also how often do we get a chance to listen to an interview the second after a match?
Believe me, it was a problem with the stream. I was there when two players sat in front of the game console and were told to hold up their match for 10 minutes while waiting for an interview to finish. I was there when staff was requesting permission to ignore the stream from now on so they can finish the tournament. I was there when they paused and ultimately restarted a 3rd Strike finals match to wait for a tech to fix the live stream. All this is great for the audience, no doubt, but really really sucks for the players at the event.
Make no mistake, please. I am not at all complaining about how things were run. Rob and staff did a tremendous job and should be proud of the event. However, in hind sight there are a lot of ways to improve. First and foremost is that the entire format used to stream Devastation is incompatible with a fighting game tournament. I hope that future streams will try other formats which are more compatible. This may take some experimentation from tournament organizers who understand the challenges of running a fighting game tournament rather than just taking what people who are providing the stream want to give you. Don’t just accept what’s happened and assume it’s the best you’re ever going to get. Look at this stuff and ask yourself if this is really the way you want to run your event, and if not, change it.
i think in the future, the tournament shouldnt cater to the live streams. Based on what i read in the chatrooms, half of them dont appreciate any of it.
I was thinking the same thing but a lot of people complain about his youtube commentary. I think his is great but he is probably gonna compete also and he is most likely gonna make it in the top 32, so no time for commentary.
Excellent post! I realize this is kinda OT, but I wanted to throw out a request for this year at Evo to get announcers for 3S top 8 (along with EVERY other game in Evo’s lineup) who will show respect to the players and the game. I realize a lotta ppl hate chunfests (and 3S in general), but I don’t think last year’s commentary was fair to those who, say, shelled out $30 for the DVD.
Ponder,
I agree with what you are saying, but also think they did a great job for the first time trying to include a full stream of the entire event. I think there can be scheduling tweaks that can be done. Like interviews can be done at a set time, maybe in the mornings before things get rolling.
Yeah, I was the guy they interviewed between the SFIV loser finals and the grand finals. That’s when they asked me to come over. It was a great time for me and my company, but I can also see why it wasn’t a good time for the players and the fans watching so I tried to speed things up the best I could.
With that said, yes it was an ideal time to get my company some recognition, but I also would have been happy to do a more a relaxed, less time pressured interview in the morning while we were waiting for the players to show up and before things got rolling. I think more scheduling tweaks like that could really help.
Just watching the feeds once I got home, I could see how someone could actually sit there all day and watch it and almost feel like they were there. There is just a fine line of making the people at the event and the people on the internet all happy at the same. While also keeping the players moving forward.
I think the entire event was a great success and getting the whole thing finished up only 20 minutes later than scheduled it pretty amazing considering everything got started about an hour late Sunday morning.
even better, he can commentate his own match! I saw this one japanese SF4 ranbat where the announcer got into Top 8, so he decided to commentate his own match (e.honda user). fuckin’ hilarious where he’s say shit like “SAYONARAAAAAA!” everytime he jumped back to escape, and “ONEGAI!” (please let this hit) whenever he pulled an Ultra.
but honestly, the whole biased thing is really a non-factor. and its not to the point where its really trash talk, but besides him, other people with intimate knowledge of all the sf4 matchups? Killerkai? Dogface maybe? Here in socal, we use sanchez for the straight man, and shoo, gootecks or whoever for color (comic relief) though it ends up being the opposite sometimes.
My only gripe was that the big matches where on small tv’s without a splitter to a bigger one. So if you where stuck in the back you where screwed. And on top of that the streaming ps3 was on a small tv, so that meant all the good matches sucked, because you couldn’t see.
The SF4 tournament started a bit ruff and rushed, people where using 6 consoles for the first 4 pools and everyone was crowded around. I couldn’t even fart it was so tight.
Registration had some bumps.
Everything else was rock solid lots of open space, giveaways and great games. Thank you robb for going out of your way and doing this awesome tournament. I had a blast seeing old faces and laughing my ass off. Good shit
Okay I think I’m sort of buying in to what you’re saying but let me propose some other questions. Do you feel than that a live stream can be tightly integrated with the event and tournament? You can telll – even with just the positioning of the stream equipment of staff – that the Devastation staff really wanted the stream to be an integral part of the event. Or do you perhaps feel that a live stream and it’s staff should just be another auxiliary observer coming in and out when it can?
In my opinion it should be integrated with the tournament despite logistics issue just for the fact the Internet is more exposure. Beside I’m sure players won’t mind the added attention they get when they’re in front of a camera =P
yea ponder is right no disrespect to the swoozy djwheat and slasher but it was pretty annoying to hear them do the commentating on the matches because they clearly had no idea what they were talking about the whole night all I heard was(Djwheat knew alittle but it wasnt enough to do it himself)
HIGH KICK HIGH KICK LOW KICK LOW KICK FIRE BALL SUPER GRAB TECH FIREBALL WALKING FIREBALL JUSTIN TAKES IT
and watching the stream when I got home was pretty sad to see considering gootecks was there and ready to do the MCing because I saw him just standing there trying to get in but you guys just blew him off(real talk no nut hugging or hating he knows the game hes more then capable of doing it)
