I don’t think it’s fair to compare the repetitive nature of Destiny to that of fighting games. They are two completely different experiences. The whole focus of fighting games is to put you against a single opponent with a specific moveset based on what character they choose and how your character matches up with theirs. There are so many variables within those parameters such as skill of your opponent, baiting and punishing, playing footsies, not fucking up combos, etc. And it takes a lot of practice and understanding to become competent at fighting games.
Destiny feels way easier to just pick up and play, and it feels easier to be successful without the demanding honing-of-the-skills it takes for most fighting games. It’s focus is more about you versus the environment around you with the equipment available. I think a big problem people have is that in order to get the better gear and level up, they have to do the same things over and over again, and the chances of getting that gear are completely random. The goal isn’t to improve your skill to beat an opponent in a one on one matchup, it’s about getting better stuff. And the system to get that stuff seems flawed to a lot of people.
While I personally don’t mind repeating the missions Destiny has to offer so far, I can certainly see where others would have a problem with it. But I don’t just play with the mindset of getting the better equipment and making my character level up as quickly as possible. I haven’t been able to race through to the end game. I like to take my time and look around, play co-op with friends, and gradually make my character improve. That is completely different from how I approach fighting games, where it’s more about becoming da bess than it is about coordinating strikes with allies.
TLDR: Fighting games and Destiny = apples and oranges.
Yeah completing that nightfall was rough last night
i got the mida multi tool exotic scout rifle for beating it. but the visions of confluence still beats it i think cause of the solar damage and the full auto and the bonus damage to oracles
probably dismantle it did the weekly right after and got 9 coins so i have 37 i need xur to step up this week for the warlocks and give up something good
and give out the ice breaker rifle
hopefully tonight some of my people are doing the vault of glass on hard
Destiny is a social game, by its own nature you are playing with people if you choose to. By the idea that fighting game experiences shift dynamically because you’re playing with people, so does Destiny’s experience.
The difference you two seem to focus on, is goals. You see in fighting games you do have different specific experience each fight (human or CPU), but at the end of the day you’re trying to KO the opponent. You’re doing the same combos, you’re picking the same character. Playing online, most of the time you’re falling on the same strategy.
If I’m sounding disingenuous to the fighting game experience, it’s because that’s how I’m reading the idea that “you’re doing the same thing” in Destiny. Are you doing the same or similar goals? Yes, of course. Destiny is, aside from the hardcore grinding, either Horde modes or competitive multiplayer. But each playthrough of that Daily/Weekly/Crucible you’re getting *something *(rep, money, xp, bounty) that leads you to something that will alter your experience. And then you have your road dogs and I don’t know about you but hitting up Patrol missions on the Moon and hunting down crates and resource is 100% more bearable when you have a buddy with you.
But sure, looking at the mission structure and the actual gameplay goals - Destiny is repetitive. Just Horde modes.
Oh yeah, minor update: I did a count and I have 5 exotics and two exotic bounties between my two characters.
I turned in 1 Iron Banner bounty and got to rank 1. Already? I wonder how long it’ll take to rank 3 because all I want is the shader lol. I agree with you guys, doesn’t feel any different than regular Crucible except I feel the bounties are a little harder.
The defense and ATK ratings taken into account does feel subtle, but ask a player with less than 1000def about that. Any player with less than 1k defense is going to have to be very careful. They will lose firefights they start, *especially *against a maxed out Legendary weapon.
The effect is subtle and yet interesting enough that I think an Iron Banner playlist should stay. Consider it Destiny’s “Hardcore” mode like CoD and Battlefield.
Most common weapons in Iron Banner, from my experience:
Auto Rifles(no surprise)- Suros Regime, Doctor Nope.
Shotguns(again, no surprise) - Invective, The Comedian.
I’m currently using a fully upgraded Lord High Fixer(hand Canon) and semi-upgraded Invective. I got the 10 kill streak bounty done twice, and the high score bounty once. One of the bounties is useless until you hit rank 2, which is a little stupid.
I noticed a few guys saying that they’re having trouble with PvP. Like other threads on SRK I think the guys who have a hang on things should give advice and take questions.
I’m certainly down with giving out any advice for specific issues if anybody is having a hard time. Maybe something I know could help.
I think it depends on each person’s play styles. I have a lot of CoD experience but no Halo background. Before it becomes a chess game, I think the fundamentals are learning strategies, which works for low level players and crappy weapons. Not sure how I would break it down to a science like Street Fighter.
So what are some good PvP strategies? I’m pretty bad at it and usually just run around guns blazing and meleeing every possible chance I get. I get killed. A lot. I’m currently a Titan Striker lvl 23.
I have very little PvP FPS experience. I think the last game I seriously played PvP was Perfect Dark for 64.
First off, you’re already handicapped, you’re a Titan lol. I can’t go in depth but I think the first thing is to know Weapons and Maps. Then work on anticipation. If you’re accurate you can run around with a pistol, 3 shots to the body, 2 to the head, booom they’re dead! Well maybe not that easy but think of a shotgun with a range of a rifle. Close proximity maps, I prefer to run around with a shotgun and cut corners. Don’t try to take on 3 guys at once though. Look at your radar as well. Crouching makes you less visible.
i kindly disagree
invective is effective full auto, ammo regen i love it in pvp
im sure comedian is good but pratorians get destroyed with ease from my invective fully leveled only way i trade it off is for ice breaker, gjallarhorn or vex mytoclast
it pisses me off no end in crucible playing control when people just fucking ignore the capture points and just go off killing people/getting killed. or right at the start EVERYONE heads to the closest point and nobody heads to the mid point of the map to capture the second point. well done guys we have 5 fucking people all capturing one point! GJ!
played a few games last night and people would flat out run past me and not bother helping to capture points. dont they realise you get more points per kill the more areas you control. needless to say we lost badly.
Sweet, thanks for the tips guys. I need to work on sliding more. Man, I love being a Titan though. That shoulder ram is fun as hell. I like just going in and punching the shit out of fuckers. Probably same reason I main Rog in Street Fighter, lol.
