Demon's/Dark Souls Thread. Dark Souls II!

how long is this game?

I think I spent 40+ hrs on my first play through.

More stamina iirc, a lot of the preset classes don’t make much of a difference except for Royal? Or whoever, I think that class starts out with beginner magic which helps quite a bit.

If you’re going melee, you’ll need stamina just for rolling, so you can dodge + backstab. At least I think that’s the attribute you want. It helps with blocking too, or else you get guard crushed and GG

And I personally avoided crossbows.

Yeah I’ve been guard crushed into deathrape by the heavy knight enemies in the first mission a few times.

Okay I have some random questions that maybe I could get cleared up:
-When does the game save? I haven’t seen any indication of it, but I read somewhere that it autosaves after you talk to the nexus NPCs so I’ve been adding/removing random items from the inventory guy every time I’m there just to be safe.

-If you die and respawn at the beginning of the dungeon, can you kill some enemies and go back to nexus to repair your equipment, then go back into the dungeon and still reclaim your souls? One time my knife broke and caused me to die, but I was afraid to go get it repaired and lose my souls so I was struggling to get through to that point with one of the stabbing-type daggers and it wasn’t pretty.

-Can you only backstab with knives? I picked up a scimitar and it seems pretty good but I can’t seem to backstab with it.

-Is there any real benefit to dual wielding weapons? I was trying to use a knife and a stabbing knife but all it really seemed to do was remove the ability to block.

The game is pretty awesome so far. The hints from other players are a nice touch, there was one part where I read one that said something like “beginners should come back here later” and I ignored it, thinking it couldn’t be THAT bad, and then died in one hit from the next enemy. Those things have saved me on more than one occasion though, as have the bloodstains.

Bought but not a chance to play yet. Hope it has the creepy king’s field kind of soundtrack.

Yo is the co-op random or can you pick people to invite from your friends list?

Just picked it up, will be starting the game in about an hour or so.

I never really played Monster Hunter, Diablo, etc., but the innovative and challenging aspects of the game were just too much to resist

It saves every time you enter and leave Nexus. Also saves when you die, so don’t bother trying to shut it off during your death animation or else your save might fuck up. But if you do die, go to Nexus and turn off your ps3, your souls should still be where you left off.
So yeah, feel free to go back to Nexus whenever you have to; enemies respawn though.

I *think *the scimitar works. Early on, you do find a magic fused scimitar. Rapiers work though.

I never bothered dual wielding unless it was magic _____ + weapon, just to cast a spell. The rest of the time it’s shield + weapon; longbow just for the other set.

Parrying isn’t bad, just avoid doing it against colored knights and rolling skeletons.

The only way to really learn how to deal with enemies is by dying :frowning:

Actually, I don’t think thats fully accurate. I finally beat the first boss and got its soul. I went back the Nexus and activated it’s soul and got 1500 souls. I wondered if I should have saved it, so I re-loaded my last save. Unfortunately, it already saved since the boss’ soul was gone and the 1500 souls were present in my soul stock.

God damn, this game is hard.

Yeah, those guys hit hard as hell already in the first area. Definitely reminds me of kings field as far as death at any turn.

Pro tip: Don’t jump into the sparkly pit at the start of the first castle area

Just got it, I died twice already on the 1st shrine. Amazing game, and challenging. Very in-depth too. I can see myself playing this game for awhile right now.

(Will give a review once I finish it, on my blog)

The game saves every couple of minutes, more or less constantly. You should never just turn off the console while playing, as it has a small chance of corrupting your save file. You should hit Start and pick Exit Game from the rightmost option, and then exit the game from the title screen.

Going back to the nexus by touching an archstone never costs you anything other than progress. Your HP and MP are refilled, and you keep all your items and souls, it just respawns all the enemies. Shortcuts remain unlocked, found items remain claimed. The same is true for Evacuate, but not the ring you get at the beginning of the game.

You can backstab with any weapon, even clubs. Daggers do riposte damage on backstab.

Some weapons have special properties that are activated when equipped, so you might wield two weapons for the effect of one but to attack with the other.

As mentioned several times, don’t use the special soul items you get for killing bosses, you trade them in for gear and spells later. It’s no big deal if you use the one from Phalanx though, since the item you get from that is mostly useless except for PvP.

Souls still stays where you last died right? (Souls when died loses the souls 2 deaths ago?)
Souls also stays once you turn off the ps3 right?

Just kinda curious.

really awesome game, rolled a royal and managed to finish the first area after 5 or 6 tries, lol.

EDIT:
So now that I can finally level up, I don’t know what stats I should concentrate on.

i’ll probably pick this up shit just sounds too good

but i think i am taking a huge risk at $60. but it’s okay, i’m thinking of doing that tru deal. is this game included in the 2 for 1 deal?

edit - nevermind, it does cover it if tru carries it

As I feared. This game is straight up digital crack. Crack that kicks your ass and leaves you wanting more.

I’m addicted to this game like I was Nocturne; hard as hell but I still keep playing. Just managed to beat that first boss, lol.

So playing online…can we form an SRK group or something?

And is there any point to keeping old weapons? Like, can you sell or break them down for additional souls?

game is amazing. I just beast the first area. think god for the turbentine. I am playing as a theif.

wow, this game got hella good reviews. i’ma cop it, hopefully i’ll finish it before tekken comes out.

I just finished my first session of playing this game and I am very impressed with it so far. I thought that reviewers were exaggerating about the difficulty, but now I know that they weren’t, because this game is indeed difficult. I’ve probably died over twenty times total within the first and second area, lol. Those damn dragons!

The thing I love most about this game is the uneasiness you feel when you’re first exploring an area. For anyone about to play this game, I would definitely recommend not using online strategy guides for your first playthrough, because I think it would ruin the experience for this game.

If you have a PS3, Demon’s Souls is definitely a must-buy.

So a friend of mine ran into some dragons in the first area (before the first boss) and I seem to have never seen them. On the bridge and on the hillside full of treasure (got the purple flam shield). How come he saw dragons and I didn’t? Though I’m glad I didn’t at that point, cuz in the second part of the first stage, the dragon there is fucking me up. lol
