I think that’s more the Patchouli juice talking (hohoho weak purple drank).
Game is very fun.
Think I’ll be sticking with Kuon, got a fair amount of actual combos worked out today ^^
has anyone seen or have a va list for this game?
Some new videos from Nico. looks like a tournament

looking at those matches, I’m actually very impressed by the animation in some places, particularly that clown head guy. They really did a great job of making it look so bouncy and balloon-like.
One thing that kind of bothers me though is Dusk. His anatomy is utterly whack. he has TINY LEGS and HUGE ARMS and his overall proportions just look weird. Like some kind of midget only not. All the other characters anatomy is fine, so I’m wondering if he’s supposed to be like this or if it’s just a concept art mistake. I haven’t seen enough gameplay of him to check the sprite proportions in comparison.
Dusk’s anatomy is fine, hes actually kinda tall, hes just REALLY hunched over when he fights. kinda like faust. His arms are actually tied in front of him, he never uses them, he uses the spikes sticking out of his back instead.
Wait…I meant Dawn. Dawn, not Dusk >.< octopuss man.
IMO aesthetics are overrated when the gameplay is what keeps a game alive. You’re not going to play a crap game no matter how good it looks (hi BBB), and you’re probably going to keep playing a really fun game no matter how bad it looks (MvC2 isn’t exactly 3S/KoF XII level but it still gets play after over a decade).
It’s a shame that it bugs you because really there is nothing wrong with “octopus-man’s” anatomy. It’s stylized and exaggerated yes, but that’s the point, it’s better that way.
Try looking at Potemkin and Iron Tager’s legs in comparison to their arms some time and you’ll see that Dawn isn’t really that exaggerated. Dawn isn’t so different than what appears in popular American and Japanese comics or cartoons. And FYI there is a valid reason why it’s a popular style. What might actually be bugging you is his pose/stance. Try looking at his intro some time or whenever his knees are not bent.
You know what’s interesting is that you see most of the cast being used with a couple exceptions. I don’t see Noah or Licht, maybe Dawn being used that much, but everyone else seems to get a fair amount of play. No arguing, Kuon does a ton of damage, and Pekomaru has some intense mixup going on, but it’s nothing overly broken. I wonder if anyone will discover anything to abuse because as it stands, I’m rather impressed, especially since it didn’t turn into the runaway game everyone anticipated.
you know what’s broken? That fucking loud sound the clown makes.
i think neinhalt SQUIDGER looks FUCKING SWEET
Even in relation to stylised anatomy, his is just wrong. I draw and I’ve studied anatomy over a range of styles and there are several things that have been done wrong with this character’s look. Even Potempkin with his overly large arms somehow looks more natural than Dawn. It also has somethng to do with the thickness of his torso in relation to his waist. This isn’t just stylisation, this is a plain flat out bad artistic practice. Sometimes you can get away with breaking the rules of anatomy but only if you’re capable of making it look like it’s natural.
Now I’m all for style in games. I love super deformed stuff and anime and all that, but anatomical principles in drawing carry over into even some of the most simplistic visual styles. And Sometimes there’s no way you can excuse the use of certain proportions. As a general rule of thumb, when laid straight across the body, a character’s hands should end up somewhere between the knee and the waistline, and a person’s torso is usually somewhere around the same length as the distance from hip to knee (maybe slightly longer). Super deformed characters often have thicker legs or arms in comparison to the body in order to blance the large head. Darn doesn’t even have a large head. he just has really long ankle-length arms and a torso that looks too thick. His torso and arms are fine. It’s just that his waist and legs need to be enlarged http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/3074/demonrr5.jpg
I guess Dawn was supposed to have weird proprotions because he’s a demon or something like that, but I dunno, it just didn’t work out nicely. I don’t know about you guys, but I do factor animation quality and art style into whether I like a fighting game or not (though gameplay is more important) and since I like to look at fighting games artistically for the cool animation too, this kind of thing does stick in my mind more than I’d like to.
Especially since all the other characters anatomy is just fine. wtf.
Damn, that Second Stage Krusty the Clown Baloon Boss Character looks beastly!
Yeah does anyone else think that clown reminds them of Cathrine/Kira from Arcana?
That’s nice, I draw (and paint) too. And I’ve studied anatomy and physiology for years not just as a hobby but for work. I’m not blind, he just doesn’t bug me. Actually I think he looks cool, so I guess it just sucks for you that it bothers you.
By the way you never got back to me regarding Potemkin and Tager…

You want to know what bothers me is the bitches with high pitched voices. The scissors girl and butterfly loli are obnoxious to me. But I bet you like them, don’t you? We could argue all day about what looks or sounds right or wrong but these are just going to boil down to opinions, so it’s a waste of time IMO. Especially considering:
lol
Sadly you’re not alone. But personally when I play a game it’s against other people and I’m focusing on the gameplay, not staring at the pretty colors and shit. So no, the only time aesthetics factor in for me is when they physically disrupt gameplay, like animation cut-scenes that take entirely too long.
Actually I don’t really know why I’m continuing this conversation. It’s not exactly a cool move to talk down to me without knowing me, or to criticize some one else’s art that you don’t know personally either.
I too have found Dawn to be weird from the 1st time I saw him, with his tiny legs…
Potemkin looks fine because he looks deformed on purpose. Dawn looks more like a screw-up.
The latest Arcadia issue includes some concept art for the DB characters, most of which is IMO far superior to the final versions (official and in-game art).
For instance, Dawn’s proportions are perfectly reasonable, which not only relieves him of some of the “dumb and brutish” factor, but also makes his octopus arm stand out more (its tentacles also “grow out of” his deltoid muscles, rather than covering his entire shoulder and part of his chest!). The designer comments mention that his image is that of an “American comics hero.”
Other characters who IMO turned out for the worse in the final product include Kureha (her concept version is more loli-goth and less sad teen-esque, Asmodeus is not constantly poised at her shoulder like some ventriloquist’s dummy), Nina (see Kureha), Asuma (somewhat more sophisticated, and Uriel resembles a monk rather than a suit of armour), Dusk (less freakish, yet more intimidating) and Eve (she wears a blue longcoat and uses some sort of horsewhip rather than those over-the-top shoeblades). Also, Pekomaru brings the Hound of Baskerville to mind (merely add small bat-wing ears, pointed tail, long fangs), and Shiffon sits in a birdcage atop Leviathan’s head!
On the other hand, some characters were improved. Noah carries an axe which dwarfens him (see: Tsunade from Kabuki Klash) and Yui is armed with a short sword and small shield or (in a second picture) knuckle dusters with blades which protrude vertically from them.
lolwut
Maybe he was thinking of Rob Liefeld (google it)?
I can’t possibly imagine no one would notice an unintentional screw up after drawing several concept design pinups and hundreds of frames of animation.
But again, I’m not arguing whether it’s technically “wrong” or not I’m just saying it doesn’t look bad to me.
