I actually had to play against a hsien-ko player in pools at ufgt9. As people have mentioned, she eats a lot of damage on fireballs, but I was just throwing soul drains so each hsien-ko call was just free meter. Because of this, my opponent’s golden hsien-ko assist calls were literally helping me more than they helped him. Definitely not a counterpick.
When I play against other morrigan/doom players, I pick my vergil/morrigan/strider team. Against morrigan, you have the strider assist to restrict her air movement, vergil with ground movement and teleports to mess up inputs, vergil’s ridiculous normals to beat all her normals, and meter assist so you can keep using spiral swords. Then when you beat their morrigan and doom is coming in, you switch to your morrigan and enjoy your 10-0 matchup.
Wouldn’t the correct way to counter this be to play a teleporter + gold Hsien Ko? I’m no Hsien Ko expert, but it seems like calling her from full screen while the opponent has time to get soul drains out might be a bad idea.
It’s known that teleports are a useful tool against her. In that case, you’d be getting in on the strength of the teleport and not hsien ko. Missiles are still a good tool for blocking teleports, and hsien ko assist does not really counter call them well. The whole point of the golden hsien ko assist is that it goes through everything. If I have something that actually makes you have to be cautious with an assist that normally wins all trades, then I’ve defeated the point of having that assist. Even when the assist does work and goes unchallenged, it’s still not worth the liability of having hsien-ko on your team. Also keep in mind setting up gold armor in the first place either requires my opponent to land a hit on me first and DHC, or just use it raw and tag out unsafely.
Soul Drain is pretty slow to start up and a teleporting character would make Morrigan wary of throwing them out there. I’m not going to call Drones when the opponent has a beam to snipe Sentinel. Why would someone using Hsien Ko call her assist when Morrigan has thrown out Soul Drains? I’m not saying Hsien Ko counters Morrigan or anything, but you can’t use the play of someone who doesn’t know how to call assists as proof that the assist doesn’t work.
In any case, the concept is to call Hsien Ko and then teleport. If they call missiles, Hsien Ko will hit Doom out of startup and plus you should have time for a mixup on Morrigan now since she has to respect the assist. One idea for a counter Morrigan team that uses Hsien Ko assist is Dorm/Hsien Ko/Morrigan. Dorm super jumps and casts spells while calling Morrigan assist. Get charged up, call meteors or whatever, stalking flare DHC gold armor, then raw tag back in OR go into soul sisters. Now both Dorm and Morrigan have get off me assists and this might be a team where Dorm’s pillar assist would actually come in handy.
hsien-ko gold armor assist with vergil. call assist around mid-screen, M teleport, morrigan has to respect the assist and you may get hit by missiles, but it gives pressure if anything. Enough random hits and you’ll get another meter for SS that morrigan also has to respect.
Sounds nice at least, but hsien-ko will probably take half her life or more from soul fist spam in one assist call, which means one shot at controlling the flow of battle.
People are forgetting that you need to just hit Morrigan in the first 10 seconds, proceed to kill both her and Doom by expending minimal resources, and then maul Vergil on incoming. So, you need someone who is fast and can lead into high damage (basically everyone lol). But, in terms of being able to apply pressure at the start of the round and stop Morrigan, I seriously think your best options are optimized set-ups for an optimized Wesker, Wolverine, Taskmaster, or Magneto. Those four can put out high damage at a relatively low cost and are insanely good at the start of the round.
Who sent Chris G to losers? Or did he end up in losers due to a penalty impediment of sorts?
On a semi-related note (but more relevant to the topic), Angelic’s in the Evo winners top 8, and if I’m not mistaken, he sent Chris G to losers a few majors ago (*edit: it was Final Round 16). Is Shuma Gorath’s beam assist name that escapes me at this moment) viable against MorriDoom?
Thank you. I found out after scrolling the commentary thread too. I remember seeing some of Windzero’s matches against KBeast and the Norcal Chris player, whose name I’ve also forgotten (ugh). Chris G always seems to lose to a relatively unknown player.
