Dee's Nuts: The Definitive Match-Up Thread

With juri you can’t rely on upkick unless you are really confident in your charging. Her jump arc is deceptively fast.

i got bodied by the big bald man today, my observations:

  1. Be VERY wary of your jumpins. I said it before, and i will reinforce it again: he recovers MUCH faster than most characters because of his high hitbox. Sagat players know this, and they WILL TU if they have meter (and sometimes even if they dont)

  2. EX sobat punishes fireballs of course but his TU has enough reach to punish it pretty hard (the majority of damage against me was because of blocked ex sobats)

  3. It’s actually not that hard to walk sagat into a corner. just stay about 2 character lengths away from him and park your ass there. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t going forth and racking up damage, when you are at that spot the world is yours.

I faced haunts and another sagat today, i can upload the vids if you want (the last round of me vs haunts is pretty ugly; none of my upkicks were coming out as intended)

Yes please!

Tip for sagat is to safe jump him with j.mk it can still be really hard for him to read and he cant reversal uppercut u right after blocking it cause he blocked it so low. Other than that be careful with how u fireball, Sagats/shotos expect you to respond with a fireball when u block one. Jcool took a lot of damage when weaksauce ultrad him and jumped in when he immediately fireballed back after blocking a tigershot. Like someone else said you can take your time makin your way through the fireball obstacle course and dont be afraid to AA with normals. And dont always hit a button just cause u think u can, it can be good to wait a moment and let them make a mistake or move first so u can react. You gotta take full advantage of your oppurtunities, u punished the uppercut at the end of the last round very poorly. First fight u hit him with a jump in but went for c.mp but sagat is too tall to use that move when u hit j.mk on the top of the dome. That coulda been a big comeback cause u coulda got a dash/walk utra off that. Weaksauce is a great sagat you need everythin you can get when playing top people.

Damn, that Sagat could read better than Levar Burton.

I don’t really feel comfortable giving advice to players who are better than me. I’ll just make some observations about that match in general…

Good Sagat players are pretty hard for Deej to deal with imo. You can only play the fireball game with him for a few seconds before it starts getting overwhelming. Then your natural reaction is to get midscreen and hope you can punish one of his TS’s with a reaction EX Sobat or jump-in.

This might work eventually and score you a knockdown, but the problem is what to do after that. Against most characters, I’m comfortable hanging around right outside of Sweep City so i can use lk sobat to get around low forwards, sweep, focus, etc. The problem with Sagat is… it just doesn’t work out like you’re used to. It’s hard to explain… I think it might be because most Sagats don’t mind throwing TS at a close distance, which I’m not used to. I know you can lk sobat over low TS, but you really gotta see it coming.

The other major problem is obviously the difficulty to crossup and jump in from mid range. I often jump over a TS thinking I’m nowhere near him only to get tagged by his f+RH, or a kara TU. And forget about crossups. It’s just not worth it. I’ve had my crossups blocked and been hit by TU before i even touched the damn ground.

If Deejay was in Vanilla, that matchup would’ve been even worse, like 13 / -3

So i don’t know what to tell ya Jcool. I’m not really qualified to advise you. I do think, however, that you would’ve beat him if you played 2 out of 3 sets. Most of his big damage came from making smart (but kinda lucky) guesses, and I think you would have adjusted to that over another 2 sets.

Thanks for the advice people. I think I’m going to fall back from the tourney scene

How bad is the Dhalsim matchup?

I never learned the matchup in vanilla, and to me it seems like its super hard for Dee Jay to get in on him. I know how to fight him and counter his mixups and tricks, but I end up dying trying to get in.

you can crossup sagat. just don’t try to land on his head. land on his back or neck.

I actually feel deejay has a pretty even match against him. since knee shot is your ticket in over the fireballs and under the limbs. you got two good ranges in this match, full screen away, or in his face. between that is all dhalsims area. its still tough to get in, but we have it easier than most.

I cant bring off the top of my head how to beat his limbs, unless you want to do psychic c.HP to beat things. LK sobat goes over his LKs and his slides. just be careful not to get thrown once your in, otherwise its back to square one.

I got tired of out playing people in my bad match ups then losing so I started training w/ Guile and his move set and combos felt normal to me.

Then it dawned on me. I REALLY like Deejays play style… I like his ability to control jumpins w/ knee shot, his forward movement on sobats and his vortex.

I just gotta live w/ the fact I’m gonna be losing a lot due to him being boned when it comes to pokes, and damage

Nothing eats crap like knowing somebody is a scrub, and them taunting your poor deejay, out playing them and losing RIGHT at the end because of his inadequacy.

Have faith. Maybe somebody will discover some glitch to give his ex sobats armor or make EXMGU into ULTRA 2 easy mode.

Sorry to change subject, but does anyone have advice, general or DJ specific, for tick command throwers like Abel or Zangief? I feel like a noob for getting this far without properly figuring out what to do when an Abel rolls into your face, mashes jab, then command throws. It worked on me like a million times last night. Help!

dash back, throw him out of the roll, jump. Or try your best to stay away from getting into that position.

Able can be tossed out of all his rolls.

Bait it out with an air slasher, then step forward and throw him out of the roll.

There’s throw invincibility on the very beginning of the EX MGU so if he’s getting predictable with his throw set-ups you can use that to counter. But the timing is kinda weird so I recommend practicing it in training mode before attempting it.

Also his jump arc is really high, which lets you walk underneath it and toss if he jumps in from too close.

I’m actually working on this match-up too, but I generally hate fighting Abels.

Does anybody know if Deejay can punish any of Abel’s wheel kicks on block?

idk if deejay can punish wheel kicks on block but lk sobat is your friend after the step kick

if you lk sobat after it
beats the throw option.
beats the cr. lk option.
gets you in the air so if abel does st. fierce then you get pushed away from him.

Cheers for all the prompt advice guys! I will try this out in the field and let you guys know how it goes.

MK upkicks is a good option after f. MK > dash too.

LK sobat beats cr. LK, throws, command throws. Loses to cr. LP, and ex tornado throw.

MK upkicks beats cr. LP, throws command throws including EX tornado throw. Loses to if abel just blocks, and it will whiff if he cr. LK.

Ah cheers for that breakdown, no cigar… very useful to know

i don’t use mk upkicks enough.

I’m scared to. :nono:

when i played a fan of my youtube page’s deejay he used mk upkicks and it worked but he didn’t follow them with another mk upkick or hk upkick.
