Dee Jay Match Up Thread - A New Beginning?

Same as the Ryu match up. Don’t walk into low forward, Ex Axe kick is an overhead and watch out of dive kick.

That’s really it man, he’s just a shoto with a decent low forward xx fireball.

Also, expect a FADC after that fireball, get stunned and die if you walk into the low forward. Be more careful with footsies than against, say, Ryu, because you can quickly lose your life on one mistake.

Alot of evil players make the mistake of of playing him like normal Ryu, witch in many matchups will get you killed.
The good ones will be more careful with cr.mk because it slower. Will rarely use EX axekick because it’s easy to counter, punishable on block, slow startup and pretty ass in general. You get a setup after it but if you get the hit it’s always better to go for dat damage. Dive kick mixup aren’t too hard defend against if you know to look for it, it is however a good occasional jump in to fuck up your normal anti-airs.
I’ll add more later, I’ve wanted to take these two to the lab for a long time.
I’ll leave you with this: axekick canceled from any normal except close mp is NEVER* a true block string, so if they’re using it in block strings you can go for EX sobat, EX machinegun, EX upkicks, super or ultra* if you see it coming.
After a blocked cr.mk switch to stand block****, you have no reason to keep crouch blocking because he had nothing to hit you low with.

  • cr/cl.hpxxligth ak is a true string idk why anyone would do this :s.
    ** Normal upkicks whiff, EX is unreliable.
    *** Back dash works too.
    **** If they see this they can do cr.mk, nothing and then sweep (they might have to take step forward). I’ve never seen anyone do this, it’s pretty impractical but it’s just an idea.
    I realize now that this IS like ryu match, so there is no point in posting anything else 'cause there’s not much to it.

Does anyone have any tips on the rose matchup? I feel as though she beats dee jay in every aspect of the game. I try to zone and all I do is help her build meter and off a reflect she can go in. Also almost all of my normals get stuffed by her normals so I try to keep out of that range but what else can I do? She has a good anti-air and after a successfully blocked block string or teched throw she can back dash her way out of pressure. What does dee jay have in this matchup?

To be honest, I have no idea what to do against a turtly Rose. Offline, i can hold my ground, tech when needed etc. but online i get destroyed by stupid slide->throw shenanigans.
Also, if the guy is patient, he can outzone you pretty well and that godly backdash screws with your offense… I prefer to play Honda against Rose than Deejay,

Just getting back into AE after a long stint on SFxT. Bringing my A-game this time!

Case in point, I don’t know why I’ve been messing around with jab combos after knee shots and cross ups, when I should just have been doing cl.MK, cl.MK xx HK Sobat. Way more damage.

Also, gonna actually focus this time around! After seeing PR Balrog rep Rog’s focus attack, I figure Dee Jay players have no excuse not to try to make our FA work, even though it kinda blows.

Any intel on possible 2013 Dee Jay changes? I think it’s pretty much a sure thing that cr.LK will go to at least 4f startup, given Combofiend was talking a storm about it. I’m not sure what other changes we could see, though. I’d love for EX MGU or EX Sobat to have full invincibility up to the first hitting frame.

I hope they give cr.mp a hitbox.

In other news, I’ve just handed my PhD thesis in, so I’ll have time to work on the match-up doc a bit more. Hopefully the examination process goes well and I can change my tag to PhDeeJay.

I’ve only played like 4 nonflowchart Seth and none with Dee Jay so i got nothing.

Ok, just got back from being walked all over by a Cody player. He just get me in the corner and destroyed me. I didn’t stand a chance.

What was the problem in the match? Did you push buttons? If yes, don’t. Better getting thrown than eating 2 combos-> stun-> ko…

Cody can be zoned if he doesn’t have meter, since your AAs work well against him, just don’t do stupid shit on wakeup since he has some autopilot safe jumps and can kill you for one bad reversal. It’s an even match, look Cody’s moves frame data so you know when it’s safe to go in or whatnot.
Also, try getting that knockdown and go to town.

Yah, I think I tried to tech too much. I’ve researched his frame data, and I learned some pretty great things. Medium, Hard and EX Criminal upper are punishable by U2, same goes for Ruffian Kick. Non EX Zonk Knuckle is also -8. So right now I’m feeling like I should just be really patient, and block until he uses a special.

I used to get destroyed by Rose, but now I learnt the match up and I can tell you, the most important thing is footsies. Yes Dj footsies. Reason being, you can pretty much be even or even slightly ahead in a fireball war. She is afraid to fireball because it has ass startup and recovery, and you can pretty much scratch your ass grab a drink and still be in time to sobat that shit. She can only reflect or absorb so many, and at mid screen distance it’s not easy when you alt between light and heavy where she basically has to guess. Try and keep this distance, and WALK Back if you smell a slide coming. Whiffed slide = cr mk = vortex = Gg rose. She can backdash but if you expect her to do that all the time, just walk forward after jump mk and continue the pressure. I have not lost to a Rose in a long time. Cr Mp x soul spiral is an auto u1 for me.

Yes, building on this, most Roses have a hard time reacting to mid-screen fireballs. They may reflect one back to you every now and then, but most will eat air slashers in their attempts. This is where it’s safe to throw fireballs…usually. Then again, that mid-screen distance is the safest place to slide under your air slasher and stab your toes (if you’re using costume1). Don’t forget to mix in your regular air slashers with EX, for Rose can’t reflect those unless she uses EX.

Also, know that Roses love to back-dash on wake-up. They absolutely can’t get enough of it! Use this knowledge and either follow them on wake-up or guess/option select U2 or 1. (U2 catches them for a full punish; with U1, they may fall out.) It’s worth it to guess, every once in a while, considering that Rose can’t punish very hard (if they aren’t stocked with ultra).

If she gets in on you, you’ll have to play the guessing game of “throw” or “standing forward, which is unthrowable.” It’s advisable to take a couple of throws, then get outta there.

Finally, my approach is usually to do as much “vortex” damage as possible, then get out and play the fireball game. Out-lame the lame/safe Rose gameplan.

The google doc for vs Sakura is wrong. She’s a bad match up. You won’t win the fire ball fight (unless your opponent doesn’t understand why 48 beats 50 or what it is to loose charge), on reaction to your fake sonic boom she can jump and jh.K all your normals and you won’t have enough charge, she can punish all blocked sobats, mgu is useless, her cross up j.mk hits a phantom stray hitbox ensuring you always get hit, all her combos corner carry, meterless ultra, easy ex to ultra, her stand jab hits you crouching and she’s positive (she can come in and stay in free), she builds a ton of meter on block and on hit it does a ton of damage too, her crouching mk punishes any buttons stronger than light punch/kick (except stand mk,) her focus jumps over your crouching kicks and she gets to knock you down on trade even if you hit her with a knockdown, if you give her too much room in the corner she helicopters out for free and you can’t catch her and more…

The match up starts ok, but once she has meter it’s hard to continue a lead. You can’t push buttons to keep her out, she can force you to break charge in a fireball war, once she’s in she can build a ton of meter even if you’re just blocking leading her to escape your vortex when you finally hit it. Oh, and she can jump in pretty liberally if you aren’t charged, but if you are, she has a certain range where you will always wiff EX kicks but she can also hit you with h.K and it hits cross up (wtf.) The match is on you, she can do some brain dead stuff and you have to take most of the risks.

You on the other hand can try to keep her out and hope she makes a mistake, of course that means you can too (disaster!!) You can use your standing m.k which seems to be a very spam-able move in footsie range (especially if you can get to 2 hits to break those armor attempts.) You can use your various tools and hope she doesn’t get her shit started because once she touches you, she puts you in the corner and can now escape your pressure.
