Dee Jay Match Up Thread - A New Beginning?

Abel 5-5

Believe it or not i think this matchup is 5-5. Used to hate it, but now that i’m more comfortable and familiar i think its even.
Abel actually has to respect deejay’s wake up if you keep a down charge unlike most of the roster. Abel has to bait you into reversals and punish. Command grabs are still great against deejay. If you keep a back charge you can MK sobat through the grab if you make the right read. If you don’t then be prepared to pay the price. The match can end quickly if you guess wrong thrice so be wary and try to control the match as much as possible.

Essentials:
Safe sobat spacing
Smart Patient Zoning
Forward Throw cr. HP unblockable
Combo into sweep
Abuse LK sobat
Ultra 2 for comebacks

The reason this match is even imo is because we can go nuts on abel’s wake up which is completely fair considering his explosive offense. Go with some loose crossups so you don’t fall into ex command grab or safe jump OS throw if you have a safe jump against abel. The forward throw unblockable is essential. you can even mix it up with knee to keep abel in the corner if you get him there. You will have to spend meter against good abels unless you guess at a 90% rate or are just on point. Spend more meter on ex sobat as opposed to ex mgu and ex upkicks. Ex upkicks is good, but since regular upkicks works i recommend sticking with it. The zoning game lets you set up the rushdown here. So smart zoning waiting for rolls and punishing those accordingly. This will give you meter and life advantage allowing you to make a mistake or mistakes later on and using meter to get out. You can also backdash step kick > fierce or mash throw/st. jab to test the abel player’s timing. Scrubby yes, but it works. I recommend testing that early if you want because they won’t have meter for an FADC combo

Any other input?

Is the forward throw unblockable just a slightly earlier j.mk follow-up to the whiff cr.hp?

I agree with the 5-5 assessment; though I feel it’s a volatile matchup because of both characters’ ability to abuse eachother. The first hard knockdown can snowball into a win, not unlike, say, many Ibuki matchups.

I don’t use EX Sobat much in the matchup. Is it to beat Wheel Kicks on reaction, or mainly grabs/a risky escape from roll mixups?

It may be a bit obvious, but OSing throw is also very useful on jumpins/safejumps.

I need to find a good Abel and get a bunch of games in with them. The last person I played a bunch of casuals with at NCR was pretty good. It also helps for me to test out a few things that would probably make me look scrubby but who cares; it’s like being in the lab cuz it’s casuals.

That crossup mk Abel can do to Dee Jay in the corner to make both ex and regular versions of JKM whiff is nasty. I don’t know what the setup is but I’ll post it here if someone else doesn’t get to it first. It’s really something to watch out for.

Either that or I’m bad at timing my JKM. Don’t really think it was my timing because Yeb and I played around 20 games this weekend and he had a few setups where my JKM would whiff as well. Even with reversal and non reversal timing (believe me I tried both lol). Maybe Gen and Abel have similar setups?

Can I get tips against guile. He is by far one of my worst matchups.

Yeah slightly early j. mk. i can’t do it in training mode, but i did it in tournament. My friend alex was like wtf i blocked it both ways. I didn’t even know i could do it lol

LATE ex sobat is for wheel kick and grab escaping. I don’t like holding up or back dashing much.

A lot of characters have at least one setup like that, that’s why I laugh at ppl who cry about upkicks.

i recommend doing lk upkicks in this situation so you don’t get full ultra’d or swept on reaction. Well they still can’t, but its harder. If they OS then of course you’re done.

I’m starting to think that DJ vs Guile, Yun, Fei and Sim are close to 3-7 matchups. It might be worse against Blanka. It’s that bad

i’m not sure. Sometimes i feel that and other times i feel just 4-6.

Blanka is actually not that bad if you stay out of the corner.

well spaced sobats and GO NUTS when he has no meter. I mean absolutely nuts. If you want to see me play offensive then watch me against blanka. I got nuts before they get that one bar. If we had the threat of an overhead we could go work in that match because they would have trouble keeping down charge.

going to evo? we can ft10 and you can decide how bad the matchup is free.

7.5 Blanka IMO. Deejay’s best bet is that it is online and random sobats hit me when I hold back instead of me blocking them.

I would LOVE to see this.

Random sobats? you must be talking about another deejay player Kappa

But yeah i got better fundamentally. I don’t think its that bad overall. It can get bad, but not 7.5.

If i was going i’d play you, but going to evo is a bad investment right now.

Still can’t do shit versus Guy, get rushed into the corner and can’t press anything due to run stop pressure. I think the match up is just as bad ass blankas. He has a easy safe jump, better pokes at close range, easy OS and too many options in the corner… The only thing Dee Jay can do is empty jump throw off a knock down… Other than that ggpo, I just dont get the match up. I dropped from 4600 pp on my new account to 3800 due to high pressure Guys and Kens. Fucking lame ass frame traps.

Dee Jay’s frame traps don’t even allow him to do that much dmg since his options off a counter hit are limited

BTW: I don’t know if anyone uses this combo but, if you go for the FADC combo close st medium punch reset, if you get the counter hit, you can link cr lp off of into cr mp xx whatever

So CH close st mp -> cr lp -> cr mp xx special move

Too bad we didn’t get to play at NCR, I didn’t know what you looked like. Want to headhunt deejays.

You’re more of the wakeup ultra deejay yeah my bad.

I don’t think deejay has any legit options in neutral, and Blanka wrecks him on knockdowns.

How are you going to play offensive when you play a legitimately good Blanka who knows the matchup? They are just going to blow you up for moving forward, and the risk:reward on safe sobat is just meh because of the risk of neutral jump.

n/m thatstuff doesnt work on chun

so you’re trying to bash me for wake up ultra . . . the only legitimate reversal option in that match? yeah i guess i’ll just sit there and try to be as helpless as possible.

i played ferris about a month or two ago. got bopped mostly, but got a good game in and realized how badly i was playing it. Spaced sobats are easy to do and they work. less is more in that matchup. I don’t go for the sobat option all the time. You make it sound like i’m going to be using it like a damn fireball lol its just something to be used when space is there to create a certain distance and keep you out of the corner.

why you feelin’ yourself so hard?

i haven’t been playing deejay, but we can run the set tomorrow/today.

not a matter of feeling myself, deejay is garbage and the matchup sucks. You guys should all be alting cammy or something.

Ferris mains bison now btw his blanka isn’t as good now as it was a year ago and I was always better at the matchup than him.

i did better against you than him, but that was months ago. i haven’t played seriously in months tho. Honestly its bad, but my offense is better.

I’ve seen Native beat a blanka in tournament. anything is possible.

You have to do a lot to win
perfectly spaced sobats
almost no fireballs
only safe jumps or jumps to make up ball whiff
don’t get in the corner
use strongest non flowchart vortex on his meterless wake up
bait and punish as hard as possible
do not let blanka get started, but that’s easier said than done.

Who was the Blanka though? Native outright conceded to Ferris in an online tournament and was also going to do so vs. me.

Also your connection to ferris should be a bit better than ours is, makes it easier to block random sobats, aa, and slide fireballs. When you let deejay hit you it makes it hard for blanka to get anything going.

I saw you play once on the stream station that was downstairs. If you would have found me you could have played: Me, willpower, Kurokiba, Ex Moses and Soothsayer. Talk about the gauntlet, I watched everyone money match Air and get bodied. Actually willpower almost won (I think it was first to 3) but ended up losing 2-3.

Next time man; I don’t mind fighting Blanka. I had to deal with K groove Blanka for a long time so this version isn’t too bad LOL.

I need some serious help against Evil Ryu. Any suggestions?

What do you need help with? I play E.Ryu but I have’t played many Dee Jay’s as him or vice versa.
