Dee Jay Match Up Thread - A New Beginning?

Also, does anyone have any tips in the hakan matchup? Should I not go in on him on knockdown, because that parry jab just blows me up

Balance?
Parry jab? You mean Hakan?

You can do fake jump ins followed by c.lk combos or throws. That said, a well-times jump attack can’t be parried on wake-up. You just have to get it in meaty. Also, moves with more active frames can punish BDNC-s.lp.

If he picks U2 you shouldn’t be doing anything to him on wakeup apart from meaty fireball anyways once he has it. If not parry Jab ain’t so hot against cross up, it’s the parry crouch short that’s a pain.

Just use safe jumps that are baits, or you could crouch in front of him, then backdash to bait out a command grab that you can punish, or even just walk back and forth, and you could grab him, or sweep him, or whatever. Just because you can’t go for the mini vortex doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to him.

Whats the general approach for the ken match-up I feel like I am fighting him wrong.

How are you playing the match? Offensively? Defensively?

The right way is to play defensively and allow him to hang himself. You need to out fireball him and AA the jump ins. Its easy to play run away, the problem are your options once he gets in. Ask yourself: Is he using OSs? Is he mashing on my wake up? How has he tried to bait me in the past? Can I get away with a focus backdash? Its a lot to figure out in a match but once you get the main idea behind the ken, it should be easy.

Here is a old clip of me playing against DRS Chris

The main tools are, reacting to air tatsu with either a slide if its from far away, st lp st mp or even neutral lk. You want to make ken jump in and frustrate him. If you can keep ken grounded, you’ll be able to punish the fireball game via ex sobat kicks. If you get grounded, and have the lead with both meter and health, there is nothing wrong with wake up ex dreadkicks focus backdash…

I was playing too aggressively and not letting him mess up on his approach. There were habit I picked up after the first match but I didn’t capitalize on the opportunity when I could. He also had a habit of wake-up mp dp but i was not punishing it hard enough. After watching all the videos it looks like i need to play defensively work on making my combos tight, and punish harder. Also what Ultra is best for this match.

Defense is the way to go. I use U1 because I always have a surplus of meter against Ken.

Anyone have tips for the Rufus MU?

Have you tried looking through past threads?

I’m going to start doing this. I have super stocked for pretty much every game all game and I never use it -_-

What problem are you having? The jumps in or the mixups after him knocking you down?

I get blown up by step kick and cr mk. The cross ups and jump ins I can handle. I play a good Ken and those are pretty much what blow me up. There’s also the hole in our game in which people can just walk Dee Jay down but that’s a different issue.

I just played a few games with xWax Vortex and man the guile matchup is hard. His fireball recovers so much faster so jumping in is a no go as cr.hp trades/beats all of dee jay’s jump ins. I tried zoning but guile doesn’t even need to worry about getting in as long as he gets in one good sonic boom. Any tips for the guile matchup?

Against Guile’s who know the matchup, its tough as hell.

Cant outpoke, cant sobat pressure, cant jump over sonic booms, cant outgun him in fireball war. Only chance is to try to knock him down once and go nuts with ambiguous crossups. I usually keep trying for slide at max slide distance to trade with boom if he throws it out.

If you are good with gauging distances, there is a range where you can jump over a boom and threaten a kneeshot which is just shy of the range of his cr fp, but too risky for him to throw a stand fp in case you dont kneeshot and go for a normal jump mk. Only other way to get in short of using 3 bars for ex sobat fadc.

If you can get into st mk poke range, you are good. cr lk is a good poke too

Yeah, Guile is a bit tricky. I’ve barely been able to squeak out my wins, but I chalk that up to the other person not knowing the match up that well. DeeJay isn’t exactly the most played character so I feel like I get away with a lot of stuff that I shouldn’t. I try to tell people that they should punish the L Sobat, but they just always seem to forget or miss the timing because they think they’re still in block stun. Weird. In terms of bad match ups, I don’t know if I’ve found any really yet. I have in general hard match ups for myself, but I haven’t exactly found a lot of good match ups either.

I’ve been having trouble with the Guy matchup, and trouble looking through this thread for tips on it also because we refer to eachother as guys and we have a player with guy in his name.
Anyway, recently this has been my most frustrating matchup. Most of our blocked specials are at least -5 and it seems Guy’s go-to punish is st.mp which seems to come out in five frames, therefore I believe safe blockstrings are necessary in this matchup and risky setups aren’t viable.

I’ve found that run-stop pressure sometimes can be answered with lk.sobat if you can correctly read a cr.lk, however, because of his ability to punish this at that particularly close range, futhermore, because this is basically a minor reward with a risk for a good punish afterwards I wouldn’t recommend it.

It seems that Guy plays best against people in the corner, so the best option is to steadily walk out of his ideal range (st.mp) and try to play footsies with cr.lk>sobat>wakeup game, st.mp for anti airs, and blockstring cr.lp>cr.lp>cr.lp>st.lk>hp.air slasher. Some of our best bread and butter damage is just zoning and anti air-ing, so far though I don’t see any other method of really connecting damage against Guy at the moment, just solid footsies while keeping away from the corner. Punish bad habits like focusing in front of us (sobats) and going in with elbow drops (st.mp).

Sad to see this really hasn’t been messed with since ultra dropped. Love to hear thoughts on old bad matchups and matches with the new characters. What your ultra choice is and all that. ill put my own write-UPS soon, but
I don’t think blanka is a bad match-up anymore, only Elena might be the only real problem from the new characters.
