DC Comics Thread

It really insults the intelligence, although in a marketing sense I can somewhat understand (Although don’t get me wrong, personally I still absolutely loathe it and I agree with you guys), Making something profitable would mean taking advantage of a formula that would bring in the green. Comics tend to play on People’s Completist-syndrome to the point that they know that some people buy comics to collect them (The 90’s overhyping sundrome is coming back again… i hope not), Just like what that guy Tizoc indicated, he’s interested in character development, nothing wrong with that in hindsight but if we look at the bigger picture getting people more and more interestied about recurring plot threads and “Development” is continuity in full throttle.

So what if I didn;t know (or give a SH***) If The Hulk’s ever say got colored-Pink, if it’s a good story it’s a good story, if it’s bad, it’s bad, I won’t worry about how the pieces came together because in the end these characters don’t exist anyway and i’d rather waste enthusiasm with something more important with my life.

HA! If someone ever got me started on “Why I hate the proliferation of Decompressed Storyline (AKA storyarced based storytelling that reaches for months)” it would have to be another thread altogether…

Infinite and even Final Crisis is the PERFECT set-up to swipe everything clean much more so than the first Crisis, but a format in which they are just folding and padding old storylines that make no sense just to make everything tight would really squeeze creativity and good storytelling.

Problem with DC is that they ARE CONTENT with being number 2, that should not be the attitude of any sompany, Marvel’s stories in potential are the same as DC’s (heck Writers go back and forth) their main advantage is that Marvel does BETTER MUCH MUCH BETTER Marketing, they use characters and position them in various media to get in the sub-conscious of people better.

DC should focus on finding benefits…

Why would we read Booster Gold (which IMO is a good book BTW) than say anything with an “X” tagged on it
Why would Batwoman in Detective comics equal “Dark Reign”

Bottomline MAKE US CARE!!

LOL and Dwayne McDuffie… This guy knows more about JLA than say Brad Metzer but his hands are so tied (which is a big no no for creative people) that every single story in his JLA arc sucks… as opposed to his run as the writer of the JL TV show which is pure gold.

Co sign what ronin said about geoff.

I think that even though DC harps on continuity a bit, in a lot of cases, they can be summed up pretty easily if you want to get into a lot of the current stuff, poorly articulated but good example, the Bat-books in June, if someone asks, “why isn’t this Bruce Wayne?” It doesn’t take much to say “he died…” Other than the fact that Bruce is “gone” The new bat-books seem like they’re telling some new stories, with some decent creative teams(other than Judd Winnick on Batman but whatever)

Honestly, when suggesting new stuff to my friends who aren’t as comic savvy I feel I have to explain more continuity when it comes to Marvel books especially since Civil War to WWH to Secret Invasion to Dark Reign being back to back.

Even with Superman and the New Krypton thing, it takes more explanation than Batman stuff, but no where near as much as “Well Iron Man and Captain America had this whatever which led to etc. etc. etc.”

Not to be the DC nut hugger or anything, but as far as original stories go, there’s quite a few involving big characters that are great such as All Star Superman which is great, All Star Batman and Robin, some of Batman Confidential and the Vertigo stuff(not sure if that counts)

I believe someone said it best that Marvel just has better marketing, because pretty much all of Marvel reading is in continuity other than the smaller time guys like Daredevil and Iron Fist

Daredevil is considered small time?

Compare him to Spider man, Wolverine, X men or the Avengers

yeah he can be consider small time, (you can partly blame Ben Afleck:lol: ), ofcourse this has nothing to do with the qualty of his book

OH WAIT DC THREAD, Batman is cool

Batman suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks :V
Superman FTW.

I prefer Supes too but i had to throw some DC cliche this is a DC thread after all

Am I the only one who thinks Battle for the Cowl’s ending was waaaay too damn ambiguous.

Spoiler

I mean, yeah, I’m sure it’s SUPPOSED to be Dick at the end, but the back of the head is hardly a good way to tell him apart from Tim, especially with the way his hair was. Oh well, I’m gonna hold out hope that DC is gonna shock us all and make Tim Batman.

sano is happy after bftc 3

You know how Bruce Wayne sent “final” messages to Dick, Tim, and Jason?

Well… what did he say to all of them? I wanna know!!!

I just can’t help but feel like DC didn’t really wanna resolve anything in BftC so as not to risk angering fanboys.

Spoiler

"Who was Batman? Who was the Black Mask? What did Bruce’s message to Jason actually say? We dunno! We’ll leave it to Morrison to figure it out, fans’ll eat that up regardless of what it is!

It wasn’t a BAD comic, per se, it just felt incomplete. When you have an event comic like that, even if it is a smaller scale, it should have a proper resolution.

I wonder when Geoff Johns’ Secret Origin is coming out… I’m only interested in this book because it’s Geoff Johns…

BTW F— DC for trying to emulate the Captain America Death pattern… how original -_-

Batman is my favourite fictional (not just superhero) character of all time, and he’s much more iconic than Cap…

Killing Cap no matter how well it was done was IMO Preposterous…

Getting rid of Bruce Wayne, is downright beyond unacceptable, much more so than the other Iconic heroes on the A-list of both companies (well maybe at least equall is Clark Kent’s footing)

BFTC #3 AKA the worst kept comic book secret of 2009 LOL and future Batman stuff

[details=Spoiler]Tim Drake will be Red Robin. In that comic he’ll be looking for Bruce Wayne.

Yes I’m happy at the final result of BFTC #3, but there were a bunch of comics giving the ending away if you kept up with Batman related books (issue 666 mainly, then the Detective arc where NW stepped into Bat’s shoes and answered a Bat Signal call) and Nightwing (taking on Batman’s villains, in one issue Barbara said “Wow I’ve never heard you talk like that, you sound just like Batman…”). On top of that, an artist messed up leaking the indentity of Batman, someone in the Wing-Nut forum got a heads up about this A YEAR AGO and didn’t say it outright but strongly suggested this would happen, plus the fact everyone knows Didio hates the character Nightwing AND there’s already a Kryptonian Nightwing running around. What better way to get rid of Nightwing - the non Kryptonian one that he hates -then to have him become Batman?

This was the worst comic book secret this year aside from comic book related secrets like the Wolverine movie getting leaked and MVC2 being available for download.

But whatever, like I said before. DC editorial didn’t like Nightwing (not Dick Grayson, just his Nightwing persona. Yeah…) and they have actually physically prevented him from getting some good writers like Waid or Rucka who would’ve killed to write him or have NW do anything major like beat up Deathstroke. If it takes putting on Batman’s costume to get Dick Grayson to kick some ass then I’m all for it. [/details]

Death means nothing in comics. Bruce Wayne is just taking a vacation. Hell chances are Steve Rogers will be back this Summer.

It’s same ol’ same ol’ with DC. They want to create a world without Superman(Clark), Batman(Bruce) and Wonder Woman(Diana). Like they did during 52 and part of One Year Later! Like they did in… the majority of Trinity - A STORY THAT’S SUPPOSED TO FOCUS ON THOSE THREE WHA… and just like they are doing right now. All will vanish and all will return. Until they vanish again. :looney:

Trinity doesn’t really count. The comic wasn’t about them per se, but their positions as pillars of reality.

Agreed! :badboy:

Started off strong and then got into a rut once they started messing with a world without the Trinity. Bagley’s pencils are great though.

I can’t fully agree on that
Cap’s death was great and not preposterous beacuse not only it was a great story but what came after his death was also excellent, that’s why Cap’s death was probaly the best death in comic history
So Bruce’s death can work as long as the future stories will also be good
and beside Bruce isn’t dead he just gone a billion and one years back in time…

I enjoyed BFTC. The whole time I figured that the obvious choice was to make Dick the new Batman, but I secretly hoped for Tim since I like Nightwing and wanted him to stay around. Oh well.

I recently got into comics a few months ago actually, and I’ve been favoring DC more than Marvel. Green Lantern and Batman are pretty much the only things I try and keep up with though. I’m greatly looking forward to all the new Batman titles coming out and of course Blackest Night.

Are there any other good DC series going on right now that I should look into?

World of New Krypton, Secret Six, REBELS & Jonah Hex are some series you may want to look into:
WoNK is nearing issue #4, but is one of the best books from DC ATM.
Secret Six is made of win, you can read info about it in the thread I made (it’s on the first page of the Comic books forum)
REBELS: Nearing issue #4 or 5 I think but the writing is great and funny

Jonah Hex: Most of the issues are stand alone stories but they are very entertaining. You can grab the next upcoming issue and you won’t need to know much prior to it I think.

I pray for Batman now that it has Judd Winnick as the writer, I think the new Batman deserves a lot more than that. Hope one of the writers Sano mentioned can sink their teeth into the character after Winnick has finished making a mess of it.

Morrison and Quitely will handle the new Batman in their Batman and Robin book. It’s too bad that’s sure to come out once every 4 months because Quitely’s a slow penciler so we’ll have to deal with Winnick most of the time…

At least Winnick’s run will have Bagley’s pencils. I still hope Winnick’s run only lasts 4 issues, because Bagley’s does.

Detective will become a Batwoman book under Rucka. Don’t know if it will stay that way forever.

Superman and Batman’s supposed to continue with Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne regardless of what is going on in their books.

Don’t know if the new Batman will show up in Justice League…
