DC Comics Thread

I heard about Manhunter, never read it but I’ll try to track down the issues. It sucks though cause this is the 2nd time it was cancelled. After the first time, the fans complained so much that they brought it back. Kinda like what happened with that show Jericho on TV.

Manhunter was hella weak. I supported that series for like the first year before I gave up on it. It always boggled my mind how that book garnered enough fan support to stave off cancellation so many times. It was just so derivative and the writing was so middle-of-the-road that I don’t think I’ll ever read another Andreyko comic again, other than Torso. It was a poor man’s Daredevil in the post-Identity Crisis DC Universe starring a chick, so in a way I guess Andreyko lost before he even began, but still.

I think I was suckered into reading it because the first few issues had these amazing Jae Lee covers.

So you don’t like comic books where the main character is a milf wielding a bo stick and dawns a slick red suit beasting on villains that have it coming for them?

I found that original 30 issues pretty entertaining, how she managed to handle her life and her vigilante life were pretty well done, along with revealing that she is the granddaughter of other masked vigilantes/superheroes.

I was sad when i didn’t see Gary Frank art in Action Comics 871 dude got one of the best Clark/Superman ever

Not if they feature uninspired writing. I only have so much patience to read comics that aren’t very good. It takes more than showing a sexy lead character in a bodysuit to maintain my attention. I’m not ten years old anymore. I can’t invest myself in a story if it just feels like a watered-down version of something I’ve already read before.

To me, it just felt like the people who gushingly touted the series had never read any comic that wasn’t by Marvel or DC. Like people thought it was so fresh because it was “different,” but there was really nothing to it. A big draw for me at the beginning of the series (other than the Jae Lee covers) was the indie senisbility it was giving off. That vibe didn’t last very long. By the time she was dealing with Identity Crisis fallout, it just felt like a poor imitation of a second-hand Daredevil comic. It tried to approach the grittiness of crime comics in dealing with street-level crime, but it just never rang true for me. It wasn’t the real thing. It was just a generic superhero book that happened to try to resemble a crime book. Marvel’s District X had the exact same problem in my view.

BUT I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’m sorry you won’t be able to enjoy it any longer.

Fair enough
For the record, I personally just found her design badass and cool, more than sexy.

For me, it wasn’t just Manhunter cancelled, it was also Blue Beetle and BoP. The only book I was really, really liking at all was GLC.

When half you pull list gets cancelled in two weeks, that to me is a sign the direction of the company is changing in a way you won’t like.

Besides, Ippo’s coming back so I’ll have something.

Despero was bad ass in the back up story for Trinity #24!

Spoiler

Homeboy fought John Stewart Green Lantern in outer space and said “Air is for cowards!” He puffed up his cheeks and fought holding his breath! :wow:

didio is a tyrant

I’m getting OMD de ja vus here…

…but if Morrison isn’t gonna work with DC in the near future (long as DiDio’s still in office), here’s hoping Marvel’ll pick him up and let him do some of their series!

Considering they retconned Morrison’s X-Men run, I’d say ‘fuck them’, too.

It’s good to know that these mega-events are sucking for both Marvel and DC. Hopefully, they’ll learn not to do this shit ever again.

How’d they retcon it? Was it cuz of House of M? Cuz even after that there were some references to his run I believe.

You know that shit’s been too top-selling to discourage them from cranking out more of them. They’re gonna keep making more and more every year.

Optimism is a very unbecoming trait in you, Deathy.

Everyone who didn’t read Blue Beetle sucks. Just letting you guys know.

Xorn wasn’t really Magneto like Morrison intended. Because Marvel didn’t want Magneto to be a mass murderer… So every writer who has used the name Xorn just added more crap to who Xorn really is. It went to more than one Xorn to Xorn being a force of energy after House of M, to Xorn’s energy trapped in an Omega Flight member’s body, BLARG… :wasted:

I haven’t even touched a comic book in about 5 months. You know how much I’ve missed out already in Green Lantern? FIVE FUCKING MONTHS OF GOOD STORY TELLING!!! That’s like…almost 150 pages.

So when I get back to reading, I’m probably gonna finish up Final Crisis and be like “Yeah, this shit sucks.”

And you’re right, it’s a very unbecoming trait, but the next major crossover, I’m sitting it out. Easily. They’re not getting my money ever again. I’ll just stick to whatever Geoff Johns writes.

^What if Blackest Night turns out to be a Major crossover where you HAVE to read a non-Geoff written book to continue the story?

 Damn that’s lame, Mags has ALWAYS been about Mutant Superiority, and you can bet he would start WW3 if it meant for that. Furthermore, Morrison having Mags treat humans like how the Nazis treated other people is a nice twist to the character.

Wat?

Man, Giffen’s 80s Justice League is a really fun read, Beetle throwing out a joke at the most RANDOM of moments is kinda funny IMO.
Plus I kinda like Bats in this book…he doesn’t seem like the hardcore, badass mo-fo he is now.

Which probably won’t happen since this is Geoff Johns’ doing and will more than likely be contained to GL and GL Corps. He handled the Sinestro Corps pretty well. I expect the same with Blackest Night.

I tried to read the first Blue Beetle TRADE, BABY and I thought it was whack. That’s another book I’m surprised has such vocal fan support. The Cully Hamner art was nice but I can’t believe Keith Giffen wrote it. I quit after a few issues. Didn’t care for the plotting, had no interest in the characters, and thought the dialogue was offensive… Like, how many times did the characters have to call each other “ese”? Did Giffen think we would forget the main character was Latino if they didn’t talk like that? Sheesh.

Also, to complete my terrible reign of disdain of DC books, I would like to make it known, in a public forum, that I approve of the cancellation of Robin, Nightwing, and Birds of Prey. It wouldn’t bother me at all if they never came back. I can’t remember the last time Robin was good… Maybe back in the '90s during Chuck Dixon’s first run. Nightwing hasn’t been good since the Dixon days, too. That was a long time ago. Birds of Prey hasn’t been good since Dixon’s run… No, wait, there were a few readable arcs Gail Simone wrote. Problem was her run, as lauded as it was, suffered from horrible Ed Benes artwork and really inconsistent storyarc quality, not to mention the random stupid Bat-crossover here and there.

Those books deserved to be put out of their collective misery. It’s about time a company stopped publishing a book just to keep the brand visible. Of course, knowing DC, they’ll probably relaunch them all in six months with new #1s and super-hyped creative teams, and people will eat that shit up, whether it’s good or not… You know there are continuity pornographers out there who HAVE to own EVERY Batman-related comic out there.

I wish those human beings would get canceled.
