DC Comics Thread

I didn’t tell you that you have to like Hal. I don’t care if you prefer Kyle or whomever over Hal. I was explaining my point of view about the whole '90s fiasco.

I am sure your quest for justice is tireless.

and I mine.

about as tireless as all those asshole HEAT members who threatened Ron Marz with death.

if these dickheads can get their way, then I see no reason Kyle fans can’t.

It’s really not that big a deal in the end. Hal was the Green Lantern for, how long? The Hal Jordan of the 90s is not the same Hal Jordan from that time period. He is the product of writers who neither understand the character nor what made him great. I suppose, in the end, he is a legitimate take on the character–just not the best.

If there are people who favor the post-Crisis Superman, there can be people who see Hal as a villain. I’m just not one of them, in either case.

I probably could’ve been less of a dick about it, but I get reactionary when people call ET into question, but hype “Rebirth” up as some epic fucking writing.

it was Johns, Johns is a good writer, everything he does is above average, but that wasn’t Johns at his best, by any stretch of the word.

I like you guys, Zeph, and GoodMourning, you’re both top Comics Fans, and I don’t wanna be treating you guys (or your opinions) like shit.

I got carried away, I don’t like Hal, and I don’t like Rebirth, but you guys are allowed to like whomever you want.

yeah the worst was when the hal fans took out full page ads in wizard magazine talking about “restore the corps…bring back hal” etc

I just think his time has passed.

I don’t mind him being back from the dead, just that he displaced his replacement.

I thought there is a God in the DCU. I don’t remember if they actually call Him God, but in Morrison’s JLA run, we did see Zauriel and the heavenly host and stuff. Also, isn’t the Spectre supposed to be “The Spirit of God’s Wrath on Earth” or something to that effect, or did they change that?

I bet they did mention the Mongul/Coast City thing in an issue of GL, but I was pretty sure that the part where he actually destroyed it was during Reign of the Supermen. I don’t have the TPB of it so I can’t check to verify. I googled it and found this -
http://www.glcorps.org/mongul.html
If that site is accurate, then I guess the actual destruction was in Superman #80, and the fight between Mongul and Hal was in GL #46.

GROUP HUG, EVERYBODY!!

Hey, I could give a shit about Rebirth. I’ve said before, I don’t follow mainstream comics these days. Last time I even looked at the modern mainstream DCU was Infinite Crisis, and it only solidified my opinion that a good comic is so damn hard to find.

I don’t like the way modern writers seem to care primarily about continuity and flashy battles. I don’t think they give a shit about good characters or the ideas that their flagship characters represent. I think it is a very rare occasion that somebody breaks the mold and writes a superhero story that truly captures the imagination, and presents a character worth admiring, or at the very least, a character worth examining.

The saddest thing is, it doesn’t have to be that way. But at some point, the establishment got the idea in their head that this is what comics are supposed to be about, and damned if they’re going to do something different. It’s been nearly a decade since I regularly bought monthlies, for this reason.

There is a Judeo-Christian God, and then there are the Greek Pantheon as well (and some lesser gods).

yes, he exists in the DCU, and Morrison’s run on JLA would make him seem like top dog, but also acknowledges others.

right but in zero hour in the last issue they give you that timeline and at the beginning of it is the big bang.

Blame Dan DiDio, man, he’s the fucking devil.

his idea of “Big, New, Exciting!” is killing off 30 second and third stringers, and topping it off with the death of a first stringer just for shock value.

remember, motherfucker wanted to kill off NIGHTWING.

I haven’t been paying attention, but I thought Zero Hour got retconned by Infinite Crisis. Anyway, not to get into a theological debate or anything, but the Zero Hour timeline still holds then maybe the DCU God caused the Big Bang. Who knows. Dan DiDio? Heh.

On the bright side, I just saved a buncha money by switching to Geico.

George Clooney: “He wants to kill you, Dick.”

I don’t think it’s just him, though you certainly have something there. And to be honest, I think a lot of it is just the way the wind blows. Trends are a shitty thing, but since DC refuses to give up the current industry model (selling monthlies to specialty shops, and wondering why so few people buy their shit), the only way they stand to make money is to pander to the lowest common denominator. And right now, the majority of the readers seem to want absurd fights and spectacle, no matter how little sense it makes.

Kyle’s my favorite. Mainly because in Studio Udon’s Sketch book last year they did a crossover drawing with Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Vega(M.Bison in the US), Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Darkseid. Anyway, the Green Lantern they used was Kyle for that drawing. Oh I am a very simple man.

Now when Capcom’s Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law comes out and if by chance they use Superfriends in that game (Black Vulcan and Apache Chief are series regulars) and Hal Jordan is there then I will have problems oooh… :looney:

Just joking lol! I like Kyle slightly more though, but I don’t have anything against Hal. I grew up with Hal through Superfriends and Super Powers, when I think of GL I still think of Hal first.

Seriously though I would of liked it if Hal stayed as the Spectre and Kyle stayed as the Green Lantern. Kyle’s still a GL out there in space right? Only read about GL in JLA…

But hey, it’s comics. Eventually everything goes back to the status quo due to A) Fans complaining who heaven forbid can’t go read back issues when the characters were the way they liked oh noos! B) Creators want to relive the stories they grew up reading and not deal with what’s going on with the characters today.

That’s one of the things that pisses me off about comics along with dead people coming back to life. Course dead people come back to life for the same reasons as A and B though.

People say they want change, then when they get it nobody wants it. Me, I’m always for change so long as it is done well. In the end, I like to see characters progressing and not regressing.

But hey, it’s comics that’s just how they are…

From what I’ve heard (and from what little I care), some of Zero Hour still holds. You need a fucking chart to figure this shit out, but only pieces of it were retconned. God, I hate DC.

And I might be wrong, but haven’t bits and pieces of Gaiman’s Sandman been referred to in mainstream DC? There is most definitely a traditionally Judeo-Christian God in those books.

Yeah, Sandman’s been referenced in the DCU. I know the new Sandman (Daniel) played a role during Morrison’s JLA. And then there’s the Wesley Dodds Sandman, who has crucial ties to the Gaiman Sandman.

But then again, there’s also stuff like Zatanna showing up for John Constantine’s birthday party. I don’t even know if the Swamp Thing is still part of the DCU or if he’s just a Vertigo thing now. Batman referenced Swamp Thing during Dini’s current run, so I guess it’s all just a case of who gives a damn about continuity.

Lol I’ve heard Didio say twice that Vertigo is not part of the regular DC continuity. Main reason is that Vertigo is geared towards adults and he doesn’t feel that younger people who read DC should mess with Vertigo. Huh? People that are less than 20 years old read Marvel and DC comics coulda fooled me… He denied it being connected recently when asked if Vertigo was one of the 52 Earths, which he said no to. Ohs well…

Vertigo has Neil Gaiman.

Neil Fucking Gaiman.

That alone gives it an edge over the DCU Proper.

but I’m a fan of superheroes, so there you go.

It would be pretty stupid if Vertigo was counted as one of DC’s multiple Earths. Although just for kicks, I’d probably read a comic featuring Yorick Brown vs. Kamandi the Last Boy.
