Tony Daniel did the whole Dick Grayson Batman run right? I didn’t have a problem with his work, I thought it was a little heavy and over the top at times, but it was consistent and pretty good. To each their own though, his new direction with the ninja thing is kinda odd…
I still can’t get all these bat titles, frustrating me. Going to hit multiple comic shops when I have money and just stock up.
Conan O’Brien visited DC Animation last night. It was pretty funny because he picked up the big DC Encyclopedia (hey I have that book lol) and started making fun of a lot of C listers like Bat Lash and Captain Boomerang! Then Bruce Timm showed up and drew Conan as a superhero, he looked he was fit in the DCAU lol!
Tony Daniel’s a terrible artist. He draws in that pseudo-Jim Lee/Marc Silvestri style. I would go as far as to say the he single-handedly ruined Morrison’s Batman work. I mean, compare Morrison’s first arc with Andy Kubert, or the Black Glove issues (with J.H. Williams III) to R.I.P. or anything that Daniel drew. Horrible, horrible stuff. Daniel totally lacks storytelling chops. All he does is angry musclemen with gritted teeth and clenched fists with plenty of unnecessary crosshatching. It’s this decade’s version of the '90s Image style. His work ruins the tone of Morrison’s stuff, makes it a chore to read.
I hate how Morrison seems to get saddled with all these lousy-to-average artists who aren’t talented enough to help him fully realize the boundless scope of his grand artistic vision.
DC’s basically got two house styles now. They got the pseudo-Jim Lee/Marc Silvestri/'90s Image/Top Cow style, and they have the Brazilian style that’s risen into prominence since the early 2000’s (Ivan Reis, Diogenes Neves, Joe Bennett, Joe Prado, etc.).
They also have Mark Bagley, but he kinda sucks. (I drank some Haterade this morning.)
Tony is pretty damn good actually & he’s a good writer so I have no problem with his stuff myself.I can give him this though he doesn’t do a whole lot of crosshatching like Jim Lee does.Morrison saddles himself with lousy artists.I thought for sure that Kubert was going to do the entire ROBW run but all he did were the covers & Morrison picks the artist he wants for the stories he writes.IMO Frazer Irving’s stuff in B&R captured everything to a tee.
That seems to be DC’s problem, they don’t have that artistic identity for anything. The Brightest Day stuff has Ivan Reis,Scott Clark & Adrian Syaf.Marvel does have some consistency art wise, but I wouldn’t go that far as to comparing them with DC.DC is like a football team trying to find an offensive identity, they think they have something that works & they turn around & switch up
On Leather Wings (Man-Bat), the game one with Riddler, the Scarecrow episode with the football team, the Scarecrow episode where he mind fucks Batgirl, and the Joker one with the fish and the robot are my top five favorite TAS episodes.
I don’t think that’s always true. He usually does get to pick who works with him, but before Tony Daniel took on Batman’s art chores, I never heard Morrison hyping him up, like Morrison usually does for artists he genuinely wants to work with. Same with Philip Tan on Batman and Robin. I’ve read Morrison say kind things about both Daniel and Tan after their work was published, but that’s mostly because Morrison is probably too nice a guy and wants to make a stand for magnanimous artistic solidarity. (And he hasn’t been drinking my Hate Juice.)
This is true of his New X-Men work as well. Marvel assigned several of the artists for various reasons (fill-ins to meet deadlines, Silvestri for the final arc because Marvel had some deal with Top Cow). It’s hard to believe that he would be so excited to have all those fill-ins.
I’ve made it a rule of thumb now that if it’s a Morrison written story, the art is bound to suck. I think it’s the way both companies even out the awesome work going on.
I never bothered with the new X-Men run that had everyone in the leather jumpsuits and fucking puckered lips, everyone looked like a gay Elvis.
Well to darksoul, what I meant to say was Morrison DOESN’T saddles himself with lousy artists.Everyone he picks is good.I can give DC Comics this:at least they are consistent with the artists unlike Marvel.
Anybody reading Brightest Day? Professor Stein knows the voice who is talking to Deathstorm & the Black Lanterns.Could it be someone we haven’t seen in awhile & also is Batma:Dark Knight out yet? If anyone has read it,how is it so far?
