I’m immune to your Sagartry because I don’t own the game any more, YAY.
I think this will be my last try at the game assuming I even do get around to it. I tried accepting its legitimacy and that didn’t work, so I’ll just embrace its brokenness and see where that’s getting me. Even if I do give it up again, which I’m sure I will, I’d never sell it unless I can get back out of it something close to what I put into it.
Gamestop is such a rip off.
Was it just me or does Mature’s damage look a little higher than everyone else’s?
edit: it was just me. I haven’t been watching too many matches of that. Stages are sweet though. Temple of Doom stage is awesome.
Sf4 is incredibly not broken. I think that’s part of why people don’t like it, actually.
Capcom has learned from past games and has removed any combo creativity and infinites (besides the intentional ones).
Like I said before, sf4 is one of the most “fair” fighting games ever. Every character can do unblockables. Every character can do 50% damage off one hit.
But there is no variety, and no secrets.
Sf4’s biggest flaw is that it’s not broken at all.
Also, the game hasn’t been out for six months. Not to mentioned that you guys have been playing on and off. You can’t act suprised when you suck at that point.
Quentin: you’ve got about a week left to pick up the 360, I’ve had other offers.

So true. He is good though but whines like a noob quite a bit. Very rarely does he compliment his opponent and always has some excuse followed by a maniacal laugh.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. They need to fix some hit detection glitches here and there, and rebalance damage (I’m looking at you Sagat!), but otherwise I find the game pretty balanced and mostly free of abusable tactics, for right now. Could that be why people don’t like it? Perhaps.
From what I’ve seen there are quite a few tourney viable characters, even though the shotos do reign at the top. It’ll be interesting to see where the game goes as the months wear on.
Can I act surprised if I pick Sagat and start winning?
Also, the “quite a few tourney viable characters” argument can be made for almost any game.
I suppose Sagat is only good in capable hands or online truly sucks because I seem to have no issues with Sagats really and I play Abel, they either employ the jump back tiger tiger tiger tactic or don’t realize I’m blocking their tiger uppers and punishing them. That’s not to say I don’t run into those who know what they’re doing, just seems online the bad outweigh the good or maybe I’m just not high enough… don’t know.
And that creepy 38 year old man makes me laugh every time I see him.
I’ll argue this part with you first…because you know I’m one of the few people who actually understands what you’re saying Lee…
I completely disagree with you. The only way to “balance” a fighting game is to make everyone broken. Look at GG and VF. Everyone has something that pisses you off especially if you’ve never seen it before. Everyone is capable of completely taking over a match if they play the matchup right and wait for openings. The main difference in the tiers in GG and VF is that the best characters get MORE opurtunites…but in GG (with the exception of maybe Pot) playing the top tier chars takes alot, alot, alot of time to learn that stuff.
Everyone in this game is capable of either damage, solid keep away, or mixup tactics. But some characters are just BETTER at it. Why would I play Sakura when I can play Akuma? Why play Guile when I can play Ryu? Why play Gen or Fei-Long when I can play C. Viper or Rufus? Why play Abel when you can play Gief or Balrog?
The fact that there’s nothing deeper is the reason why the tiers stand out so much. If you want to win you gravitate towards the character that does what you like easily…and not the character that fits your playstyle the best.
I’d equate SF4 tiering more to Smash Bros Melee tiering. There’s about 8 to 10 characters that can win…and in general every other character fits into the mold of one of the 8 to 10 at the top. Then of course, you have the god tier of melee (Marth, Shiek, Fox, Falco) which is where I believe SF4 will head balance wise. My bet is on Ryu, Sagat, Rufus and Balrog being the god tier of SF4.
And here we agree…
This imo is the source of a majority of the whine with this game. Because…when people were winning people thought it was a good game. Now since you didn’t pick a shoto/Blanka/Gief/Balrog the game is harder…
This is the 3rd sucks because of Chun-li argument. It doesn’t. Most of our crew can beat out a scrubby Chun. It takes work…but we WORKED to get there. So…playing off and on and not focusing on what you need to learn to beat said shotos/Blanka/Gief/Balrog is goofy.
What I find funny about this is…if people aren’t going to get competent enough to beat the cheese of SF4…how are they planning on keeping up in Blaze Blue? That game is going to be harder then 4…and Arks games require you to work a lot more to get a win…or to even learn the game in general…And since it’s Arks every character is cheese…So…Hmm.
I don’t dislike SF4 because of balance issues, I just think its a really boring game.
Chun is nothing to me, I will low medium her all day. I’m a try to make out to the next ranbat when they get their board. Be on the lookout for the next Naptown Clash, probably in August. We might have Gameworks sponsoring this one.
I think Cle is gonna go to Arcade Legends on 6-27. Anyone wanna go? I’m gonna see if they’ll allow a TV in advance for 3s
Just got a quick update from Adam…
Says the Arcade 3rd setup is a lot different, slower, gives you more opportunity for stuff. He’ll explain better when he gets back, but it apparently changes a lot of how the tiers really look.
3rd tourney starts at 7. They’re running on like 3 hours of sleep and got a noise complaint last night. Have gotten a lot of casuals in with Jwong and some other pretty well known peeps.
Both of them have been playing well, but Joe is playing typical impatient/nervous…They’re probably going Ken and Chun for their team. Adam’s not sure about entering the 4 5 on 5, but I think he probably will.
Everything on arcade is weird, but cool…takes money but like nickles or something. Not a lot of people there today, but all the big stuff happens tomorrow so…
And last, just for Kam…they have a Tekken 6 machine up there…He said it was fun.
sets off happy fireworks
I will definitely be attending that night.
I gotta level up my anime car in Initial D and continue to drift like mad.
Ghaleon, I’ll try to be there. I don’t know. I want to go to GG one for sure, and I’m not naive enough to believe that I’ll have every Saturday open in a given month. So it’s hard for me to say which of the other weekends I’ll miss. Though I don’t really like 4 and I’m terrible at Marvel, I think it would be nice to show up to their first ranbat just to show support, but on the other hand, this will probably be their most well-attended one with or without me, so we’ll just see I guess.
Jason, the only way to have balance is to have one character. The best way to implement balance while keeping it fun and interesting is to make varied but still viable play styles. This is hard to do though. Anyway, I know losing has something to do with why I don’t like 4, but I don’t believe it is the only reason, or the main reason. When I get to the bottom of this, I’ll let you know. Maybe the game’s deeper than I think and I just don’t get it, but I seriously doubt that at this point.
Certainly. I would appreciate that a lot more than saying
“I played sf4 twice, here’s my in-depth review”
The ranbat is still a month away. You can easily win with Sagat and put the argument to rest.
Ghaleon: I want to go on the 27th, but I have to juggle which days to take off between that, the ranbat(s), other personal stuff, blazblue…
I haven’t played to my ability yet in a sf4 tourny which is really tempting me to attend. I could also donate some money to you in marvel.
Double post: there’s a multi-page thread is fighting game discussion about antwan being a cereal stick thief.
The midwest’s hero has already fallen :s
Lee, way to epic post in that thread btw.
Long time no post here. Anything not boring happen? I’m looking at you, Matt Moreland.
