Dayton, Ohio. The one, the only, the best

I’m gonna try to make the July 11 day. Some of my friends wanna see the arcade, so I’m gonna try to wrangle a meet-up there that day. I hope they get a 3s board by then, that would be cool.

Man, if they get 3s on a candy cab…

Oooohhh MK2. Hell yeah! I’ll get down in that too. Straight Mileena and Kung Lao all up in that ass like Roca Pads!

I sort of feel like double elim should happen, time allowing. The point of a ranbat is to have rankings that are superior to a standard tournament. so if we do single elim we will be doing sort of one and a half tournies worth of ranking for the price of three tournaments. (three losses to be elimintated vs six)

thats bad.

ill be there regardless, what do you guys think?

Oh yeah do Double Elim, FUCK single elimination.

Definitely double elim. I don’t see why anyone would want it otherwise. If someone has a suggestion for a different way to run the ranbat tournaments, certainly send it my way. I’m open to all suggestions. Once we get these things running smoothly and get a decent turn out, we can add more games.

Alright, here’s my thing with straight up double-elim and doing ranbats…

It kinda takes the “ranbat” out of it. You lose twice and you’re done, regardless of how many other people are there. For example…

I play Ghaleon first. Great. 99% that’s a loss.

I get tossed in losers, and then I meet someone I play all the time, say, Joe. Great. I’m now done and knowing myself, I’m out of it for the rest of the day and have to sit around cause I’m a Team Dayton Taxi. On top of that, I don’t get any “points” I don’t feel like I accomplished much for the drive, etc. etc.

I would’ve thought the purpose of running ranbats to begin with would be to get more people playing…but if it’s going to be a regular tourney setting…then people will just go to tournies…

Matt made the suggestion earlier, and I thought it was good. Do Round Robin pools into single (or double depending on the size) bracketed tournament, just like they do for the World Cup.

Depending on how many you get, you can change it on the fly. I.E.

-Ten people, do pools of 5 each, then take the top two.
-sixteen, 4 pools of 4, take the winners of each pool, or do 2 pools of 8, take the top 3, winners of each get a bye.
-20 4 pools of 5, take the 4.
-14 2 pools of 7 take the top 3 in each, top players get a bye
-8 2 pools of 4, winners go grand finals
-18 3 pools of six. top two winners get a bye, third winner gets to pick who they play first.
etc. etc. etc. If you get an odd number draw straws for that last person to be put wherever.

At least that’s my suggestion. That way everyone gets to play at least one more time then in double elim, AND you get some nice drama earlier on. On top of that there’s no figuring out a big huge complicated bracket. Plus it’s easier to set up a ranking system going forward. You’d see tangible point based evidence of where you stand compared to everyone else.

Delpheous: That sounds like a good plan for the players. How much longer would that take though? At this point we will stick with what we have. Then we can get some feedback from the players and see if they’d like to change the format.

It’ll be longer then double elim tournament because everyone gets more sets on average.

It could potentially go FASTER if you don’t run sets in the RR’s and just do one match to decide a win, and then maybe you could go through each pool twice…then switch to sets for the actual tournament.

Then again, smaller pools tend to go faster then larger ones…and if you set people on stations then you could be running a lot of stuff at the same time and organize it well enough…

I just think it would be better for the community to do pools.

Honestly jason ranbats are ran like that with the winners and then having a point listing after its all done majority of the time.

Just like we ran for the Ohio vs Tourney at TvU

Whatever works I guess. The whole purpose of these is to improve our respective games. I want a reason for people to play harder…I’m rather tired of casuals where people don’t use their respective characters and dick around the whole time (myself included). Playing with something on the line is the point of these things…when you have money/pride etc. up for grabs people play differently, go for different things, react to situations differently. That’s good though they are most likely playing their absolute best and hopefully are attempting to improve.

Online 3s has been very good lately, I’m getting destroyed by characters I don’t know too well, which is what I want. I can smoke Ken’s and Dudley’s all day, but Oro’s and Alex’s not so much. Also, patience is a virtue…really. Oh, and bad habits…we all need to quit having them.

Edit: Here’s some sites A.L. for possible 3s boards, some might be outdated and one is a tad pricey (maybe tourney fees could pay for it or something)

^2 auctions as well GO GO!

Don’t forget that they’re a difference between “habits” and “bad habits”. Also know that a “habit” and “being programmed” are also quite different.

I think you guys are getting of course with the format. 32 people came to the last sf4 tourny with like two weeks notice. Do you really want to do a round robin with potentially 50 people? Bring a sleeping bag if so.

You may have bad luck in the first tournament, but you will not have the same opponents three tournies in a row.

Maybe I’m oversimplifying?

3s…habits and bad habits are roughly the same thing against someone who is taking mental notes of how many times you do x on wake up and x after x move. Habits = parried/throw-teched/punished/stuffed after a few rounds.

I think a compromise between Jason and Lee’s arguments should be reached. If the game has less than 16 people, run it like Jason’s example, more than 16 the normal way. These are for fun and improvement, not for people to give up when they don’t have a chance at overall points or something.

Again…I haven’t seen the place, so I don’t know how many setups there are.

But…if you have 32

have 8 pools of 4, winner of each gets into the bracket. At least that way everyone plays 3 times. Or you could do 4 pools of 8, take the top two, etc. etc.

I’m not saying everyone plays EVERYONE, but if you do pools and do RR inside those pools more people get to play more often in a competitive setting.

If we just do double elim tournaments every time there’s no point in even calling it a ranbats. Since…you’re just running a monthly tournament.

I was too blunt I think. If its possible to do round robin pools that would be more fun and more accurate all around.

It wouldn’t stop the more dominant players, but everyone else would know where they sand. Instead of just winner, and loser.

I swear… wins the same way every time.

…also, he seems to prove that doing nothing is your greatest mindgame.

Whats the status on the mixtape being uploaded? I thought you were on that Kam, or am I wrong?

Edit: Daigo also wins by A. Being Daigo, and B. Abusing the best character in the game.

I think kam is uploading it in parts/

and adam haha yeah… your edit id the truth.

Adam, I have no excuse really, I wasn’t able to build time to dice it up at home. (Everyone likes to take me home at 4am apparently. My own wheels = Better time management)

However, I’m at one of the editing labs at school now…I think I can poop out some of the mixtape on youtube…I’ll get started while I’m working on another project for class…

::EDIT:: Are players just idiots against Daigo? lol.

::EDIT:: To my luck, uploading the mixtape will be faster than I thought tonight
