Dark Souls 3: Prepare to Die Once More

So what’s the appeal of these games besides the cheap deaths? I tried dark souls but wasn’t really feeling the combat, even though it was way better than skyrim and witcher imo.

The appeal is the lack of cheap deaths.

Edit: for the most part lol

Um isn’t this the game with the giant skeleton booting you off a cliff after a blind curve lol. Idk I might be wrong. Shit is hilarious.

That’s the thing though, if you take the game slowly, you can EASILY look around the corner to see him there and either draw him out or kill the archer from range.

The game mostly just punishes not searching your surroundings. That said there are SOME instances of really crappy design like the tree boss thing whose name I forget in DkS1, but almost every “cheap death” is avoidable on the first attempt by being observant.

The experience.

Atmosphere, sense of exploration, and thought you have to put in progressing. Learning how to deal with bosses who didn’t give a shit about you was the best part of the game imo.

I see I might put some time into it then.

Yeah that’s the stuff I was referring to I just didn’t have time earlier to look for the link. It’s so infuriating that all that bs happened. Thanks for posting this.

Git gud. Some of us like a challenge.

I like Dark Souls 2 a lot. The only flaw was the nerf to the invincibility in Rolling that forces you to upgrade AGL. That alone makes the early game unnecessarily hard if you’re trying to go for a no-shield run. And the end boss was no Gwyn. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic game. DLC 1 and 3 are amazing but 2 is kinda’ meh, it’s saved by two great boss battles. I think dudes who dislike Souls 2 dislike it just because Miyazaki wasn’t the director of it and believe that everything that has Miyazaki’s name on it is perfect in every way. It sucks that the fanboys keep scape-goating the “B team.” I’ve put 200 hours a piece into both games (melee only, no summons) and prefer Souls 2. It’s a Megaman 2 and 3 situation I think.

Scholars of the First Sin kinda’ sucked and they made a few changes for the worst to appease scrubs who whined about (easy) enemy hordes.

I’m liking the changes to the combat in Souls 3 but I hope this is the last Souls game for a while.

Bed of Chaos.

Hrm so alexisascrub likes it, does that mean its filled with trannies or something?

It means he doesn’t have a problem with simpler level design, derivative bosses, meh atmosphere, crappy lore, and shitty match making systems.

It also means he doesn’t know jack shit about the Souls community or wouldn’t say stupid shit like they think Miyazaki’s games are perfect.

The dudes who dislike Souls 2 dislike it for 2 reasons.

  1. The world is nowhere near as coherent and interconnected as 1, more bonfires are used instead of the many shortcuts we had there and whilst DS1 was put together as one big world DS2’s levels often weren’t anywhere near as well tied together.

  2. Soul memory completely fucked the PVP and co-op, there was simply no point in stopping at a particular level and having a build anymore as opposed to everyone being able to do everything whilst fast rolling in heavy armour.

The rest of the game was still fun and is one of the better games out there in general but the big original just completely outshines it due to these flaws.

Number 3 for me is how most of the bosses were humanoids and fought the same way most of the time.

That is definitely a very common one too.

ya well, sm was a pain in the ass, trying to get your sm to match your friends was a nightmare

I thought the adaptability (or was it agility?) stat was pretty dumb. Made low level playthrough a bit annoying.

There’s a ton of little things like ADP and Soul Memory that made DSII a less superior game, those two things making it a step below the other titles just by themselves.

The way the story was delivered was also crap, a ton of the enemy design was limited and uninspired (especially compared to the first two games), they added a ton of trash rings to give a fake sense of diversity, you can immediately fast travel, and most importantly (imo) there was almost no sense of atmosphere and inter-connectivity. Something that made Dark Souls 1 so brilliant in the first place. Since the game throws bonfires at you every 5 feet it loses that abrasive sense of fear and worry around every corner as well, because no matter where you die you can find solace in the fact that you have a bonfire sitting not even 30 feet behind or ahead of you. Not to mention they added in the "Nothing matters ever at all" ring that keeps you from losing ANYTHING upon death.

I dunno, as it’s already been said Dark Souls II is still a great game and one of the best to release of the year it came out. But you spend so many hours playing masterpieces like Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls 1, it’s hard not to notice all the little things that plague DSII as a Souls game or even as a game in itself.

I hate that instead of exploring a vast, living and treacherous world it feels like you’re being funneled through an area until you whack the boss to death and continue moving in a straight path.

I hate how the game was built with PvP’ers in mind first, and not those who play to enjoy the atmosphere.

I hate how similar and uninspired a lot of the enemies feel. I mean, look at the three DLC areas in Dark Souls II. The main soldier enemies from all three areas are pretty much reskins of each other with ridiculous poise and minimal to nonexistent changes in their combat patterns. Not to mention I can probably name a dozen bosses that are just giant humanoid figures with a sword in one hand and a shield in the other.

And you know, it’s funny how much of a different game Scholar of The First Sin (on PS4 and Xbox One at least) is from vanilla Dark Souls II. Miyazaki’s influence definitely shows and they did the absolute best they possibly could’ve done without changing it into an entirely different game. The problems that vanilla DSII had are still there, but it’s the best they could’ve done with what was at their disposal.

That’s why I have a lot of faith that Dark Souls 3 is gonna be incredible. Miyazaki’s influence on these games is undeniable and including him will always be a step forward for the series, in my opinion.

the only thing else I hated about ds2 was they kept nearfing eveything, and nerfing all the weapons, to a point
were I didn’t want to play anymore

i bet if someone who is a “tournament” player got his weapons nerfed he would take a big shit…but i also bet a mere nerf wouldn’t stop a “tournament” player from keeping on playibg the game.

Ya it’s real fun fighting in pvp fight clubs in ds2 when everyone uses a katana, fuck that
