Dark Slayer Style - The Vergil General Discussion Thread

I like to use a combination of st.H and if I have meter, Sword hyper if he’s the last character remaining.

Basically you just want to be half screen or further from your opponent, where they can only hit you with a projectile or assist, but your M or s.H can hit. Do standard string into Stinger; on hit confirm obviously combo, on block call Doom and teleport mixup of your A2 is available, otherwise cancel into Judgement Cut if your opponent can’t punish (see Safe Blockstrings thread). Judgement Cut gives you +frames and puts you at least half screen again, where you’re at advantage. From the neutral situation you can also do a quick super jump -> Round Trip to either get your opponent to block (letting you setup a teleport mixup) or superjump, where you can easily AA with s.H -> combo.

With meter… there’s just so much I don’t know where to begin lol

you say that like your suprised LOL

Dont know if this was already post, but its quite interesting:

I was going to show a video of that earlier but yeah that basically shows the power of round trip. It gives up to nearly 100 frames of advantage on block so the last thing you wanna do is push block it and put yourself in longer block stun. Plus that added effect from the video where advance guarding it allows Vergil to keep the trip on screen for extremely long periods of time.

Might be way behind you guys online, haven’t had as much time to play as I’d like with university work. But I was pretty proud of myself when I pulled off this combo in a match earlier. Early Isedelica combo, but the result was a dead Iron Fist.

How do you guys move around with Vergil? I feel so limited with him with no airdash and stuff and his teleport is so slow. Every time he comes in I just feel so vulnerable.

He has the best ground dash in the game and his cr. A will beat everything within a 3rd of the screen of you on the ground. Honestly, I spend a lot of time on the ground and reactively jumping. His st. B and j. 2C are great anti-airs. j. A swings up so it’s pretty solid air-air into 2C + otg assist + combo. I tend to rush down with vergil though because all his specials leave him at major advantage and try to bait counterhits. You can also combo off his ground throw easily solo with 3C xx dimension slash which is 300k+. Personally I use 2 combo’s 1 that deals 800k that I use to kill characters when I think it’ll work and another 600k combo that leaves them under sword storm which so far no one has been able to adapt to leading to a lot of easy kills. Just sitting there trying to counter someone isn’t to strong an option except with cr. L imo.

Honestly I have more problems with intelligent zoning. I just have to dash forward and block/chick block a lot or activate swords -> hope I get something going.

so what makes vergil so top tier? i don’t quite see it. spiral swords is pretty cheap

Low health, white hair, trench coat, & a sword

I can’t figure out a way to get that last hit of Dimension Slash to hit reliably… I did however loop it 3 times in a match last night(on Firebrand, if it matters). It really is random but, when you do get it, it’s easy to tell.

I’m surprised that alone didn’t prompt a RQ  Played a little online last night… & I actually like that I put Vergil on point. I’m also slowly transitioning from rushing down blindly to mid-screen pokes & what not. At least with my Vergil, rush down is a no go :shake:

I think rushdown and mid-screen zoning are both viable options for Vergil. If you rushdown, you just need to cancel to Judgment Cut or Teleports with the appropriate assists.
I’m trying to run him as a versatile character that can handle anything. If they’re mid-screen, s.H, Judgment Cut M, Rapid Slash > DT are viable options. Full screen, I can keep them away with assists, and Judgment Cut H. Vergil actually has some zoning potential. If they try to super-jump, I’ll try to super jump and get them with j.S, which has incredible range and priority, though isn’t safe on block. Or j.H > j.S.

One problem I’m having with Vergil, and with MVC3 in general, since I never got good enough in vanilla to implement this, and that’s air throws. I feel like I miss so many opportunities to air throw jumping happy opponents. How do you air throw someone who’s mashing in the air? Like Frank West’s multiple jab attack? Has anyone had success with Trick Up > Air Throw. Seems like I always get hit out during the recovery.

I am having an absurd amount of trouble linking Vergil’s OTG Pick-up into Dimensional Slash. Is there a small window for it, or do you have to do it immediately? Any advice would be helpful cause I’m looking like a Newb with it…

Just cancel into super with H and another button that way the game reads the input as a teleport cancel and a super on the same frame

mash it out. just mash it out.

Yeah, had to reconfigure my controller, but I got it working perfectly now. Thanks, man.

Why would you try to air throw this when you can flat out hit him into a combo for more damage?

Air throws are great but all you really do is approach on the ground (like dash forward) than jump and immediately press forward/backward and C (I hold it). Vergils airthrow is so easy to combo from, lol. C -> f. C. If they are higher you delay pressing f. C, though imo unless its a purposeful reset you might get hit if they have a high priority attack like a divekick. But if you can hit them hit > air throw.

Anyone have any tech with his Sword Formations yet? Been Messing around with the one where you can manually shoot it (A+S -> horizontal B+S -> angle upwards C+S -> angle downward) works pretty well. Think it’s better a lot of times than activating swords and just moving forward as if they block that auto-guard makes mixups pretty impossible. His B+S is pretty good for zoning and since he has 0 recovery was using it pretty well to zone followed up by C-> f. C, judgement cuts, and other things. Need to get more in control using it though, was getting a lot of hits using it but was mashing a bit to much to get anything more intelligent than constant frame advantage 300-400k from random hits. You can go into your normal combo’s just mashing with it and watching frustrated faces was too much fun.

I see someone finding some tech or at least making a stylish combo with the blistering sword formation. I was playing with it in training and noticed you can j.h or crouching:h:xx :atk:+:s:(fire sword) repeat until you run out of ammo cause the swords cause knockdown (I believe Isadelica demonstrated this in one of her infamous combos). The interesting thing was something strange happened with Vergil’s aerial momentum whenever I canceled his j.:s: into a sword shot and his movement looked like jump canceling from DMC3 a bit though the actual effect wasn’t the same. I hope the other formations get some actual use outside of trolling the last char on a team with sword crown

I am curious if anyone here uses “unblockable” set ups with Vergil. Overhead hitting assists are excellent with Vergil while in Spiral Swords as it’s pretty much a guaranteed open up. I tried out Wesker Low gun shot day -1 with Vergil but it wasn’t as good because Vergil’s high hitting attacks aren’t all that great but thanks to UMVC3 introduction of more overhead assists it has made unblockables with Vergil great. Also very little talk about potential resets/mix ups with Vergil outside of the usual stuff.

I am also curious to the application of Blistering Swords outside of combos. I feel like there is something to those formations that people are missing because it’s absurd that those things cost 2 bars to set up. Storm Swords are worth the investment IMO against a final character.
