Daigo’s only purposefully gone top tier in AE. In other games, he’s just picked a character he liked, and gone with them during all iterations of the game. I’ve heard multiple reasons from Daigo himself as to why he’s playing Yun now.
A) "This game isn’t worth me playing Ryu."
B) He’s tired of people doubting his ability, so he’s coming back with the best character he possibly can, and bodying everyone until all the doubters are Genei-Jin’ed into silence.
Sure, if Daigo’s playing the same team as you in Marvel, there’s a good reason for it, but calling Daigo a tier whore is just plain ignorance.
Did he hire you to be his internet bodyguard or something?
Maybe after I beat him in a money match with some of the highest tier characters in the game on his team he got nervous, and decided he needed to hire random people to defend his noble name.
I’m going to have to start watching my back intensively. You’re never going to get my info, cosmic, I’m saving it for nationals.
PS When someone plays Yun in their main game, Wolverine Dante Akuma in their second game, Ryu in ST (Yeah when he began maining Ryu, Ryu was top tier), then dropped Ryu for Ken in 3S, and began playing Ryu again when Ryu was better in vanilla, only finally continuing to use him in Super where he wasn’t great. maybe you should just look the facts over a little closer, it took him one iteration of one game to go back to high/top.
Little tired of blind loyalty to celebrity figures
Not that I actually care that he tier whores, I completely agree with the choice. Pick the right tools for the job, or deal with losing.
Jsyk, I’m not a Daigo fan, but as far as I was aware, he had used the same character for all iterations of every game he’d played, other than SFIV. Not blind loyalty by any means, but the research I did was obviously incorrect. shrug Now I know.
It seems like a good return on investment team for a tournament player. The only character he’d really need to spend a lot of time with is Dante, and even his easy stuff isn’t so bad for someone who’s played other technical games.
If I was trying to win and wanted to take the shortest route there, I’d probably be playing some sort of Wolverine/Akuma team. These top players want to focus on competing against the other players, not against their own execution and game knowledge.
Theoretically there is definitely more broke stuff out there than Wolvie/Dante/Akuma, but that team is, for the most part, easy to play and gives huge rewards. As KJunk mentioned, good for tournaments. Wolverine makes excellent use of both of those assists in his core gameplan. Yeah, having Sent is nice for both Wolverine and Dante, but I think Akuma is better if you just want to bully your opponent with rushdown. Akuma is also much better as an extender at the end of Wolverine’s combos, from what I’ve seen.
Daigo in pretty much every game has chosen a character who’s just below the border of tier whoring, where they still brutalize lower tiers but aren’t the ones people complain about IE 3S:Ken, Vanilla Ryu.
People seem to forget than in ST he played Ryu and Balrog…
I think this is no different, he has some of the characters that are ridiculously competitive and are easily among the teams that shut down most/all teams lower than them, but there are still a few out there that are superior.
Dante is easily Daigo’s strongest character and to me he would be better off building another team around Dante. A team like Zero/Dante/Akuma for example would offer much more powerful DHC options than Wolverine/Dante. Those mentioning Richard N hasn’t seemed to realize that he is much more terrifying in his present Dante/Haggar/Phoenix team than he was with the overrated friends. So let’s see how Diago fares at EVO; most will agree that he looked decent in NorCal but hardly someone who will make Wong wet his pants. Tokido came to his second MvC3 tourney with a new, much more powerful team, maybe for Daigo to become a force in this game he has to do the same.
Dante definitely has better DHC synergy with Zero than with Wolverine. His DHC synergy with Akuma isn’t the best either, but the support the assist provides is fantastic otherwise. For a Zero/Dante team though, I would probably prefer a beam assist like Doom as opposed to Akuma, since I think Zero would benefit more from that type of assist.
