Dandy J's KOF Tutorial (designed to help transition from Street Fighter)

man… now that everybody is reading Dandy’s KOF guide they can watch me get my ass whooped too… awesome

thanks for this tute! it helped alot since i havnt really played KOF since i was younger haha

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I’d ask here:

How do players on 2DF and GGPO get around the stiff controls for the old KOF’s? I’ve used multiple kinds of controllers, two different joysticks (one was a Hori), and the results are the same no matter what. I don’t have a problem with moves or combos coming out in other fighters that I play (Garou, SF3, CVS 2, etc). I chalk it up to the way the games were programmed for specific arcade sticks. I can play KOF 03 and XI just fine, no stiff controls, no nothing.

For example, I cannot consistently do Iori or Kyo’s recka punches. I can do the first initial attack, but the follow up attacks come out randomly. Plus various other things with other characters, such as I do a basic down D, follow up with a DP attack, and my character does a qcf move or just a forward A attack (K’ in particular).

The only excuse I can think of would be that the majority of players on 2DF and GGPO are using keyboard. I noticed with the keyboard that there’s more consistency with my combos and specials.

I go through the same problem. For instance doing a hitconfirm stC>rekkas with Kyo or Iori. It’s a pain to do for some reason. Any other game a hitconfirm like that is CAKE.

The only tip I can give you is to slow down your inputs. I’ve been practicing doing that and it works. You just gotta train a lot. And also aim the have the pad or whatever you use go back to neutral. I would say buffer your moves as well but that only helps if your initial attack connects.

I’ve tried that, and when I do that I tend to do so with over exaggerated movements, which resulted in two broken D pads.

As much as I like Kyo and Iori, I tend to have better luck with my combos with characters that have specials that don’t overlap like King, etc.

Hit confirming that is nearly impossible…there are very few cancel frames on Iori/Kyo’s close C.

And here I thought it was just me but I did notice players much better than me couldn’t or rather kept not being successful at it.

try a Competition Joystick just like this one

it worked for me

I have that in a custom stick. No difference dude.

Would it be weird to set my buttons like:

AC
BD

Rather than:

BCD
A

I’m so used to having my punchs on top and kicks on bottom because I’m a street fighter player and obviously most people will say set your buttons however you want but, I’m worried that I might run in to some unforeseeable consequences for using something other than the default layout.

From what I recall, SNKP’s current layout for KOF has been the former mentioned layout; I as well use that layout because I’m more comfortable with it. The hurdles are doing ABCD inputs such as canceling Athena’s DM on a timely manner. Otherwise, it’s just going from arcade to arcade that use

BCD
A

ABC
D

ABCD

and etc.

It’s pretty inconsistent. I just practice both:

AC
BD

and

ABC
D

The website for 13 shows the layout I use so I suppose that’s the new “official” layout"

I’ve downloaded part 1 of the original file from the MegaUpload link but part 2.1 seems to be a corrupted rar. Anyone got a link that works for part 2 download?

Hay I was just wondering if there was any forums for kof. I also wanted to find someone to rate and descuse my team for kofxiii

LOL this is so funny and at the same time so good for first timers :stuck_out_tongue:

This has been incredibly helpful for me. I’m an SF player trying to get into KoF.

Curious question; Are there any KoF characters with counter abilities, like Gouken or Karin in SF? I tend to main Gouken in SSFIV. I don’t counterspam, but it’s fun to be able to predict your opponent with it.

Billy, Yamazaki, Kasumi, Chang, Daimon, Kyo. Ryo has parries. Maybe I’m missing someone but that’s about the gist of it.

Wow, that’s a lot. Thanks!

Still No Part 3 ? C’mon man ! we need part 3
I still suck at kof btw
