I think the best way to get in against Ryu is to take advantage of that awesome walkspeed of yours. Most players like to edge forward, and block any fireballs that get chucked their way. Vega, having the fastest walkspeed in the game, should be able to take full advantage of this kind of strategy. To get a headstart, you can Try to space yourself so that you can jump in, over a fireball, while still remaining outside of his range. I like to get into max st.MK range, so I’ll jump from quite a distance away. Walljumps are decent for this too, but it’s predictable. Just don’t jump late or they can dash and punish, and be wary of hadouken fadc into antiair.
I need help with Seth. How do you guys handle a good offensive one?
Once you are knocked down, you have 30% of guessing right or you lose around 250 and are back on the ground and so on and so forth. You need to kill him before, and make the best of it everytime you are lucky enough, he has low health to balance out his offensive capacities, he is a glass cannon, you need to break him before he fires really.
Try to avoid holding down-back during this match. A lot of Seths tend to take to the air when they see Vega crouching, and believe me, you don’t want to be underneath an airbourne Seth. Constanly walking back to create space can frustrate them into doing something that can be punished since Seth’s walk speed is laughable compared to Vega’s. Try to block his Sonic Booms with a standing block instead of crouching, and corpse hoping from time to time can be beneficial, just don’t get too cute with it. In Super, you could create enough space to Cosmic Heel Seth from a distance to where, even on block, you couldn’t be punished. However, in AE, it would be ludicrous to attempt an unsafe CH against Seth, (or anyone for that matter) so don’t do it.Seth’s wall jump is also fantastic, so be prepared to block your ass off if you see him jump off a wall. From my experience I’ve found that a solid defense and the patience to wait for and spot openings is the key to beating a particularly offensive Seth.
Wait…Bait…Punish
I’m having a lot of problems going up against blankas and dictators. At this moment, I dont think I can play offensive against them so are there any attacks of theirs that are heavily punishable on block? Also, what can I use to punish? I find that EX Wall Dive does exactly connect all that often if I want to punish scissor kicks or blanka balls.
first step is to recognize that no matter what plan you have or ho much you kno the match up, you will either
dominate then get dominated
get perfected
dominate
get dominated and then dominate
ill post more later, and can you add specific scenarios.
I’m actually very familiar with the Bison matchup, so I’ll mention some key things…I hope others add or correct me if I’m incorrect in my assessment as well.
Against Bison:
A Bison without meter is pretty much a sitting duck, if you find a Bison crouching without meter don’t be afraid to jump-in with a j.hp, and if they’re hit by it follow it up with cl.hp > cr. mp xxx EX FBA, if they block the j.hp then go for a grab (for some reason lots of Bisons think that Vega won’t grab them).
When Bison doesn’t have meter and you jump in, he’ll either (1) teleport or (2) simply block what you’re attempting, making it easier for you to mount some minor st.lk > tick throw pressure.
If they teleport follow them with a lp. RCF or if possible slide towards them, it depends on how far they are that determines what options you have such as cl.hp > cr. mp xx EX FBA, or simple throw if they teleport right next to you.
I also think that Vega’s air grab is one of his most excellent tools in this match-up because Bison’s jump speed is pretty horrible, if you predict or clearly see a headstomp coming, don’t be afraid to air grab the shit out of them. Vega’s air grab beats a lot of Bison’s jump attacks. Make it clear in this match-up that you dominate the air, because on the ground Bison can really mount pressure up close.
You can punish his slide with EX ST because the recovery on Bison’s slide is pretty bad or cr.mk / cr. mp xxx EX FBA
If Bison has meter, know that they’ll usually use EX psycho crusher on wake-up, so do your best to bait this out by walking nearby but be prepared to block and once you block it you can punish it with slide or with a properly well timed U2 (if you have it)
But really on wake-up (IMO) is where Vega kind of sets the tone in this match-up because Bison doesn’t really have an anti-air or great wake up options…if he has meter bait out the ex-psycho crusher, if they ex head stomp and you bait it out, air grab them.
If Bison has you cornered and is mounting on pressure with cr.lk and scissors, simply relax and block and wait to reversal with a hk.ST or EX. ST on the recovery of a close scissors, if all else fails do your best to wall jump out of the corner…you can also keep him off you if you keep using st.lk after scissors just to mount on some block stun or even potentially stuff a scissors.
I also think that Vega’s overhead (Piece of Mercury) is very overlooked in this match-up. If Bison is crouching, and their playstyle is rather lame or less offensive you can actually force them to stop charging so much by simply throwing a PoM at random times that you feel he’s just sitting there and follow the PoM with a throw or jump back hp. Personally if a Bison isn’t responding much or becomes a bit more defensive I like to do st.lk, st.lk, PoM
Don’t be afraid to corpsehop > throw on a meterless Bison either.
I think that the positioning in this match is really supposed to be mid-range at combat (poke him out with st. mk or cr.mk if he walks forwards and air grab him if he tries to jump) and clearly up-close on Bison’s knockdown so you can mount grabs on top of st.lk , corpsehop > grab/cr.mk, baiting EX PC/Headstomps on wakeup.
U2 is the way to go in this match-up simply because of Bison’s jump speed which is so slow that it gives you enough time more than any other character to severely punish it with AE’s wack ass U2 start-up.
I hope some of this helped…feel free to ask questions or criticize, etc…
Thanks, I’ll incorporate this next time I go up with a bison.
I do remember getting EX headstomped midair last night while I was trying to air grab him. Does air grab only work on non EX versions?
Personally I can’t even recall (sorry) lol, but it definitely works against non-ex ones as long as you’re not under them…most times I just block the ex one and get prepared to continue blocking and walking back because a lot of times after an ex head stomp Bisons like to throw that damn st.hk…if they drop right next to you, I think you can grab them during recovery…oh yeah…also make sure to grab them if they miss a non-ex headstomp and end up in front of you because most times they’ll just grab you if you don’t react fast enough…
EX HS cant be air grabbed unless you are above him and only after i-frames end.
Which is after the active frames anyway, right?
After a knockdown, I like to corpsehop him just do he loses charge on his EX Psycho Crusher~ EX Headbutt is slow enough that Vega can recover, walk under it and punish it with a nice Cosmic Heel~
Also, when far away, I like to stay just outside his scissor kick ranges, so that if they whiff it, you can punish it on reaction. And if they throw out one that will hit you anyway, those are punishable on block.
actually i think the last i-frame is the frame before the first active frame. Francys could probably tell you better than me tho.
Nah, you’re right. But that still means you’d have to be above him before the active frames. It’s an interesting way to beat it, though a big risk, since you’d have to jump early, and can be potentially hit out of it.
most people really are THAT predictable
HS gets raped by air grab.
Depending on where he is you either jump forward neutral or backward in any case you can nail him on reaction. air grab has only 1 startup and a massive grab area, vega jumps fast.
You can also slide under, or dash front under EX.HS
for any version of HS you can also block then tackle the followup. if the followup is done early it loses to you doing cr.lk, then punish, backdash, meaty cr.mk, or slide his landing.
if done meaty it loses to all air counter you can think of, stardust drop his ass. you can also backdash but then i am not sure you can punish)
If not done bison chipped you and he is out period.
Any good tips against Abel guys? I feel like I can’t really doing anything except be extremely random in this match-up…
Yes, I’d also like some insight into this match. How do you fight against Able’s constant frame traps, power and mobility? Also, has anyone ever caught Abel jumping in with Splendid Claw? I remember a while back posting that I’ve never caught Abel like this and I still havent. What ultra is truly the best one to use in this situation? Because I’ve learned it’s damn near impossible to catch Ablel on a jump-in with U2, and U1 is useless as a wake-up or reversal of any kind.
wake up ultra is typically not a good idea. U2 is better used as a whiff punish. lemme see if i can find my old abel matchup write-up… it didnt change since super
So I was playing a really good Rose today and I was REEEAAALLY feeling the damage nerfs with this match up where I think if it wasn’t before, it is definitely in Roses favor now. Her crouching hit box is pretty retarded.
cr.lk,
im assuming your cr.mk keep getting beat out, and cr.mp was avoided by the slide right? you could be balsy with the throw and make her run into the throw.
