If FADC isnt part of a mixup pressure string… i don’t do it… i can use those 2 ex bars for other stuff (like going through fireballs)
What do you guys think of the Cody matchup?
- Cody’s b.MP seems to trade alot with Vega’s j.HP (with claw on)
- Ultra 2 will punish any blocked or whiffed FBA, ST and SHC
- Cody beats any walldive attempt with b.MP, jumping back Mk and H Ruffian Kick all day
While Cody is not very fast and doesn’t have much reach, except for Bad Stones, his normals are amazing and he does alot of damage. He is very dangerous if he gets the knock down or even worse if he gets you in the corner as his blockstrings are insanely good. Cody is a total different beast if he gets the knife which does alot of chip damage, contributing to his blockstrings.
I haven’t played enough of it to really opine, but I will anyways.
Cody’s normals, from my limited experience, are really fucking good. His hit confirms must be braindead easy because I am seeing them land with greater consistency than Ryu’s hit confirms online.
I’m agreement that his block strings are good. Felt like I was in constance frame disadvantage against him.
Also, his corner pressure is good against Vega, and I found it impossible to escape. Triangle jumping out of there was impossible… his hitboxes on his jumping normals are fucking huge.
His neutral jump whatever (I’m guessing fierce, he slams his hands downward in almost a Sakura Otoshi-like manner) has a huge hitbox. It hit me when I thought I was clearly above Cody in the air.
From what I can tell, Cody’s normals tend to give him command of a lot of space on the screen. I struggled with that a little.
So is Honda lp and ex headbutt punishable by anything on block? st.mk?
I thought you could punish lp headbutt with st mk, but for some reason it was whiffing vs Ross. Is there a way that he can space it safely (I wasn’t getting blocked, the mk would whiff completely)?
I don’t know much about it at all, but I do know that you can
Yeah I never really do FADC out or RCF for that reason. It’s too hard to really do consistently and the amount of damage you get for those 2 bars isn’t really worth it unless your building meter fast or about to get the win. I’d rather use that meter for a safer combo I know I will land or to throw off my mask and poke away someone.
I think you can punish hondas headbutts with s.mk AND s. hp (but you have to inch forward like a fraction of a step to get in range). Oh yeah, make sure you’re stand blocking, if you crouch block you wont get it in time. So if you threw ur mask off and punish it with hp, thats like 130 dmg right there for free. Honda is a pain, you can’t really stay on him cuz u never know when hes going to headbutt or buttslam, and if you’re too close he’ll start his command throw ticks or spamming his cr.lp. I still get impatient in this matchup and I think right now the best thing to do is just gay it out. If he is gona sit there charging , you do the same. If he headbutts, punish it or jump to avoid it and try to punish. The good hondas are prolly going to be jumping at you and trying to trap you in his hand slaps (I got hit by 3 of em in one combo and could not get out of it no matter what I did -_-)
With cody, I just treat him like anyone else who doesn’t have many wakeup options and rush them down once I get a knock down. His normals are very good, but his only real option when knocked down is an ex move or the zonk knuckle (which he can only FADC out of the EX version, other wise it just knocks you down and puts you far enough form him to reset you strategy). Vega likes to be at midish range, this is where cody is strong at as well, so you have to play further and wait to punish or just get in close.
This stuff is not tourney play, just stuff i’ve learned from online matches which crappy and good players.
well…cant you time a FADC after RCF and time it just right to crumple someone within the combo and couldnt you use that to do an ultra, which in turn gives you a chance to combo into ultra.
fadc crumple after rcf only works on counterhit so not really worth it imo, kinda tight timing too.
You can punish Honda’s fierce headbutt with st. MK, st. FP, sweep, and EX FBA. The noramls are all 1 frame timing. Fierce is probably your best bet but if you’re confident in your linking ability go for sweep, knockdown ftw. Safe jumping Honda is a great way to get him to burn meter (which is another important part of the matchup. IMO there’s no point trying to get close if honda has EX, you just have to make him waste them).
Cody in the air is trouble some but you have to space yourself properly. he can come down on you hard with j. RH. sweeping under his jump ins is a good idea, since he’s so slow. Zonk beats Barcelona easily but you can bait it easily as well and punish with c. MP.
so what about jump in happy dudleys and balrog with the jumping st k
If it looks like a backdash wont get me out, my favorite option is to block high. I try to not let the jump-in happen but if it does, try to deal with the attacks, and get out or counterattack in a smart manner (many opponents are itching to do something unsafe in expectation of your poke or escape attempt).
yeah the beauty of Vega is you just have to hang around for those first hits.
If you get a knockdown then you have to accept that you shouldn’t have put yourself in that position in the first place. I don’t think there are any reliable anti-airs against balrog’s j. hk and Dudley is highly susceptible to air grabs, his air moves suck.
Lol pun intended joz?
Question. how often should i do my ex shc against a knocked down opponent, I use to be able to hit people as soon as they got off but now most people know how to block…should i only use it to go through projectiles now?
depends on the opponent. You can’t just stop using one technique, just use it smarter. If you know they’re gona expect it, do an EX FBA late so it hits them if they block the other way. Just try out diff things and test how good your opponent is at defending certain attacks. If you do something ALL the time, then no duh they’re gona learn it eventually.
i dont do blank EX Shc anymore, i’d either do it mid a blockstring (c.Lp>c.lp>.c.Lp.c.Mp xx EX SHC, or j.HP s.HP c.MP xx EX SHC) or at least after a c.MP. Almost any decent player has caught on the EX shc so its a bit hard to catch people with it now.
well its not that i do it all the time, its just that they know what to do in said situation. thx for advice.
also that block strings idea is good, ill have to try that out.
EDIT
Whats is the best way to block chun li’s jumping target combo. I never seem to block the second part of that hit, and dont understand what im doing wrong.
Thanks to Cammy’s cross up j.lk, she now rapes Vega for free. This is definitely one of Vega’s worst match ups, no question.
That is all.
You should stand block it, that’s whats confusing with chun li’s mix up , you have to look carefully for the motions , sometimes she do the standing combo and sometime the other and you have to block down
i was afraid of that…
GG by the way Kouryuu. Your Vega really impressed me.
cammy is free to downback, focus attacks, and ST
