Dance with the Claw: Vega Match-up Guide/Discussion

you practice the timing. No other secret. Just refining your skills, that’s all.

Unless you want to eat Bison’s 2nd Ultra, i advice you guys not to nuetrual jump when you knock him down. If you reach have not reached the peak of your jump or have reached the peak of the jump. You are going to get nut checked by Bison. You can also use this so that you make him waste it so you land and are able to block it.

I have also been crossing up Sagat, Bison, Juri when they block cr.mp and canel into EX FBA. It seems the block stun lasts long enough so that by the time Vega’s Hit box can hit them its a cross up. But it works at specific distances. Weird. Did that with Ultra once on Sagat, and T.hawk. Hit them with cr.mp and then used Ultra and it crossed them up.

Also the animation looked like the one from the vid of Makoto playing against that guile online where he crosses him up with a meaty EX FBA.

Also I have been messing around with lk.ST and it seems once its pass the intitial 7 frame start up cr.p moves like Ryu’s cr.mp completely whiff on Vega. Would be useful if the hit box was not so short on the X axis.

Also how many of you purposely whiff a lk.ST from far to bait out a sweep or poke. Its recovers in 4 frames and allows me to punish my opponents failed punish attempt.

Where do you space this?

Have you noticed that against shitty online competition you can use this as a tick throw/whiff throw? Seriously.

Its character dependent. Against Sagat you can use it closer than you can Ryu, but you have to be weary about his cr.lp. which has deceptively long range. Also its something to not be abused. But it works wonders as a WTF kind of thing.

Yeah I have. Shit catches them off guard so much.

Ex barcelona could always cross up, but it might have had an increased hitbox. Easiest to test was in SF4 against bison, doing stand h, crouch mp, ex barcelona, that shit was a hilarious reset, although the bison’s eventually caught on.

Duno if this is a big deal but I was in training mode against hakan and had him in the corner. I jumped at him from point blank with a HP and could control if I wanted to cross him up or not. It was weird, I didn’t try it on anyone else, but it def worked on hakan. I believe it depended on when I threw out the attack. If I did it pretty late and held forward I would cross him up, and if I did it earlier I would stay on one side. Someone might say this is already known, but I have never seen anyone use it as corner tactics online or in vids. Would be nice as our only actual cross up on a wakeup into a bnb combo to put them back in the corner with an EX FBA.

edit: I feel kInda dumb and not at the same time. in the corner u can cross up a lot of ppl with hp, but this can also be done mid screen as well. it s easier to cross up hakan blanka and gief. the other fatties and cammy can be crossed up midscreen but it is a little harder. the spacing seems to be about 2 linked cr.lp’s away

I think there’s enough time to airthrow bison’s ultra 2 on reaction

Alright, I kind of found a way to land an easy ch to U2 upon hit confirm of the ch (at least against balrog).

You basically do a jump-in hp/hk to standing hk. After the standing hk (blocking or hit), you are in quite a perfect range for cosmic heel ( I find it’s around 12 small squares in training mode) to U2. I’ve gotten it down quite consistantly vs balrog, other characters are a bit harder. It’s as hard vortexing as it is to do this, somewhat of character specific.

Hope someone finds this interesting…

Hey guys I’m not too vested in the Ibuki matchup but I could’ve sworn that I crossed her up with jumping Fierce a la Zangief. I forgot if she was crouching or not (gonna test it today) but it seems like a decent change-up after d/f HK instead of the usual follow-ups (sweep, EX Barcelona, ST).

thought I’d chip in on Honda…you can hit him with a standing fierce after a blocked headbutt, or standing MK if you lost your claw.

So what do you do against Blanka again?

It seems to me than being on the offensive gets me better results than playin turtle. Getting Blanka into a corner would make the match a little bit more managable. I also forgot if there is a way to punish his rolls, I already tried st.mk, Vega’s poke with longest reach (at least in vanilla) but it didn’t work, I never tried dashing in and then poking dunno if it is fast enough.

All in all Blanka is a nightmare…a green hairy nightmare, not even Sagat gives me tha much trouble…

Playing against Ibuki is not as bad as I first thought she would be, as long as you zone her and don’t let her knock you down it would seem Vega can manage againts her target combo madness. Her neckbreaker is punishable on block. I still haven’t found the answer to her kunai crossup, if you block she will end right behind you leaving you open to her rush game. As far as I am concerned her only good reversal on wakeup is …that weird looking ninja kick that goes up…the ex version. Other than that she doesn’t seem so bad as a matchup, probably even.

It would be nice if we keep adding more info about the matchups, specially regarding the new characters.

Why do you guys feel like Blanka is a bad match up. A good Guile, Bison, Chun, or Sagat was much more problematic for Vega in Vanilla IMO. I dont think no one ever really explained why this is a bad match up except for that blanka owns FBA. thats all i ever heard.

Any way you have to be patient. You have to pay attention to the ball animation so you can know what to do when he does it. Depending on which punch he uses he could go for ball foward into grab, etc. If he starts jumping up and down, you have to jump up and grab or nj.hk. And dont push buttons when he is pressuring you with normals. He can frame trap you, and since most of your cr.p shift your hit box foward you will get stuffed. And you can punish ball by blocking while standing and then sweep, or block low and EX fba. And dont push buttons at random. You have to be calculated and watch out for hop shenanigins, and always late tech, this is a must in this match up.

The Blanka match up seems bad because everything you instinctively want to do is wrong, whereas everything he instinctively wants to do works really freaking good for him. His moves will punish everything you do regardless of spacing or timing. He has like more than a 100 frame window to punish your FBA’s, for example…

Now, with that being said, once you are TRAINED in the match up to play it differently, that’s when the match up becomes manageable. No FBA’s, and one thing that would have NEVER occurred to me without Jozhear’s coaching is to RUSH BLANKA DOWN CONSTANTLY (until Ultra I starts flashing, then back off). Fierce RCF on his wake up EVERYTIME? I would have never dreamed to do that, but it is legit. Tears Blanka’s up. EX up ball? Sure, he’ll hit you with it, but it’s punishable by a sweep on hit, and then he is back down to an untechable knockdown.

The one thing that Blanka’s do that still kills me is when they get close and start neutral jumping the hell out of you. Neutral jump/ throw/ cross-up/ empty jump immediate c.short shenanigans eat me alive. I need some more practice defending against that shit. His jump is fast as hell.

You just have to keep him at a distance if he is using a lot of f+mk on your wake up backdash out and punish with either s.mk or s.hk(not sure if this works). You have to keep him guessing on your wake up so once he starts predicting backdash wake up with something else. Its a guessing game once he gets in close just look for a pattern. Also Abel has a bad wake up game as well he can EX CoD and Ex roll (throw him) reliably but other than that its a guess for him as well so attack his wake up but watch out for U2. if he activates it just jump over him or jump past about 3/4ths of the screen. Stay on the ground and just keep poking.

So, I fought Wolfkrone last night. You know, they guy who was giving Alex, Floe, and Marn a hard time at MWC with his pad viper stuff. He really is an amazing player. He beat me down 3 times, but it was too laggy for either of us to really fight because he was at the hotel room for East Coast Throw down. Anyway, I need some match-up tips for Viper. I just can’t seem to get used to all her shenanigans.

Gentlemen,

I have missed you all. Life in general has kept me from SF and my beloved Claw. I have been reading and lurking again, and will return very very soon.

Also against Blanka, don’t forget that although it’s super tight, you can punish blocked ball with dash up c.MP, and you absolutely must take Splendid Claw in this matchup. Punishes blanka ball, escape rainbow balls, completely surfs over his ground U2, etc.

Welcome back!

I appreciate the info on the matchup guys, I already put to test all the tips I got from you 3. It appears rushing Blanka works much better than any othe strategy I came up with, but just like JDH said, you gotta do it carefully, RCF is indeed a good tool to use on Blanka when he is knocked down. I haven’t been able to punish Blanka Rolls with dash cr.mp tho, I need to hit the lab concerning that.

All in all the matchup reminds alot of the old ST days, just a little bit harder.

I haven’t seen a post concerning T. Hawk yet, I have been playing descent Hawks lately, and here are my 2 cents on my experience.

His normals don’t seem to give much treat to Vega’s amazing poke play. st.HK beats jump ins and Condor Dive all day, and if you prefer to block it, Hawk’s recovery time gives you more than enough time to cr.mp and combo something after that, you can probably even walk a little bit towards Hawk and try somethin more damagin, haven’t tried it myself.

Being a tall character, it is very easy to hit Hawk with backwards j.HP on his wakeup. You can grab Hawk out of his DP when doing a FBA. I am not sure if his DP has invisibility but I was able to beat Hawk’s wakeup game with late j.HP, I am not even sure if the player was trying at all …

Thats all I have to say about Hawk, for now.

Tips against Viper? Anyone? :(((((((

WolfKrone?
