that is very interesting.
How is it cheap? Please explain.
Daigo knew the rules of the tournament. He knows the US tournaments are on console. He has the access to a console and the game. Like Seth Killian was saying the whole time, the console version is the definitive and final version of the game.
With that being said, Daigo is truly “The Beast.” Absolutely impressed with his ability to just download Fei Long and absolutely handle him in the Grand Finals. Justin basically had one trick, and that was EX Chicken Wing through a fireball, but he kept missing his links. Daigo was forever giving that to him, mostly because I bet he knew it did little damage and Justin didn’t have the link mastered.
So Justin going to pull out Rose next time around…?
Agreed with the poster below…
Moreover… what’s the point of arguing what Daigo or Justin MIGHT think? Unless you know them on a personal level, how would you know? Even if it’s a cheap move for Justin to pick Fei, how do you know if Daigo feel the same way? How do you know that Justin pick Fei because Daigo is unfamiliar with it? In this recent blog, Justin said that he used Fei because he just like to use fighters with Asian background… so that he can relate to him…
I think this is good for the community… I mean… think about it… would you want to see Ryu vs Rufus/Balrog again? This Ryu vs Fei matchup is much more interesting…
You maybe right about the national and regional broadcasters, but what about international broadcasters? If you were watching a US vs Mexico world cup game broadcast in the US, and US scores a goal, don’t you think the announcer would go “GOOOOOOOOOAL” and start getting hype? Or do you think they will just say “eh the US scored a goal…blah blah” and not really be excited? I would think they would be excited for the country they are broadcasting for. When players from the US played each other biased was not shown towards anyone via the commentary IMO.
Well I haven’t read all of this.
Justin got his 2 wins with Rufus. It looked like it was going to be a real match in the beginning…I know I felt like it.
I do also know that Daigo sandbags to download the opponent. I kept that in mind as well.
Justin pretty much stuck with Rufus for the most part, tried Balrog (twice?), then tried Viper (twice). I don’t agree with picking Viper twice, but I guess he felt like it was the best thing to do.
He did NOT used Fei Long in the exhibition. He saved that for the tournament and went all out with him there. Pretty smart plan he had there, imo. You guys know the final score.
It would be interesting, if not feasible, to see the heights Justin (or even some of our other top players) could reach if they stayed in japan for a good amount of time. (They always seem to benefit from just a few months of playing, I wonder what like a year would do.)
It’s fun to have something to root for no matter what side you fall on, having a dog in the fight always make things more interesting so props to both competitors for putting on the exhibition.
It will be somewhat of a damper if this is the last real meeting between them, if SSF4 does not get that arcade release. (I mean it won’t be as if Daigo couldn’t play it, but he’d be far less familiar).
So here’s hoping there’s a chance to see what our top players can come up with for the next go around.
It’s all fair game…this is simply a test of Daigo’s adaptation…he certainly adapts fast!..But this is the first time I actually cheer for Justin because Fei Long IS a low tier character… those 1 frame link from CW is hard to pull off… and one missed link means srk into ultra…
I really hope Daigo will main another character if SSF4 comes out in arcade…I am started to get bored with his Ryu.
daigo is realy a beast, he realy is.
that was some awesome stuff.
and justin too.
like said befor, he is so good with so many characters, thats amazing.
maybe he should try akuma or sagat to beat daigo.
btw.: were there some fights from other top japan players against the top us players?
justin vs mago, or momochi?
ive never seen one yet.
Real talk?
Daigo got lucky
With cheese
I don’t want to listen to any more commentators that aren’t Chris Hu.
It’s funny… I was thinking about Justin’s play style yesterday, for some reason, and that’s what came to my mind.
As somebody who’s seen Justin play many matches in many games, played some close matches with him myself, heard him coaching other players, and gotten some Justin coaching myself, that’s what stuck out to me. Justin’s whole game revolves around making his opponents’ game suck. He doesn’t really set the pace of a match. His game isn’t about getting his shit off. His game is about countering whatever shit you’re trying to get off.
That’s in any game he plays. Incidentally, I think he’s least like this in SF4, but it’s still deeply ingrained in his style.
So it does make sense that he would lose to players that just have their shit really, really tight.
Of course, there’s a counter-argument to that, which is that, at least in CvS2, Evo… 07… I think it was, Justin was fucking up all the Japs, and their A-Grooves were easily the tightest in the world. Justin picked them apart, but lost to Ricky that year… who, with all due respect, is known for being really smart, and fucking cheap… but not so clutch, so more prone to making mistakes.
Whatever… I’m just mashing at this point. This is an interesting comment.
Why would Capcom want to put money out for an event for people who aren’t going to necessarily buy anything? There’s just not enough people going to these events to make the investment worth it. In an economy where companies are doing whatever they can to keep money, they’re not going to sponsor unless they can see a huge return.
Take SB4 for example - do you think Capcom is seeing a spike in SF4 game and DLC sales after SB4 concluded? How about after ECT, or MWC, or EVO, or throw any other three letters together to form a tournament name? The answer is most likely no, otherwise Capcom would be more proactive in sponsorship.
A similar discussion came up in the Atlantic North thread re: why there are no majors in NYC. Check it when you get a chance.
Daigo downloading through that FiOS
The economics are great, for the cost of maybe a single commercial they could help fund a nationwide year round league that markets games directly to people who play games. It’s insanely better than traditional media.
Smart companies are really dying to get into the modern age, they just don’t necessarily have a structure that is both community-friendly, corporate-friendly, and internet-friendly enough to do it in. Just throwing money at existing tournaments doesn’t create that system, the tournaments that want this sort of partnership will change and the people who look at sponsoring events will change too.
Right now the inferior investments are safer, tv and magazine ads are way more inefficient, but companies can control their content and make sure that all the 'i’s are dotted and the 't’s are crossed, no surprises, no drama. The same can’t be said for a tournament in a bar, or looking at a poster and seeing “new crack city” next to their logo.
In these cases, not having sponsorship allowed those events some more freedom than they would otherwise have. It’s hard to tell what will happen, maybe companies will try to help the existing tournaments, maybe they will make their own (!), but I’m sure one of those will eventually happen.
As people have said, LOCAL/home team sports announcers show bias, but in a more subtle way than those announcers were. And of course national announcers are expected to show no bias whatsoever, which is a big part of their job.
The lesson here is so obvious and I don’t see enough people talking about it… I really think you HAVE to pick a main at the top levels of the game. I mean, Daigo had NEVER played against Fei before at high levels (I mean, it’s possible he had once or twice tops, but not enough to make any real difference)… and he still won going away. Daigo knows Ryu 100% backwards and forwards… knowing your own character 100% is more than half the battle, obviously. Of course Fei is not as strong as Ryu blah blah blah, but it seems like people are really resistant to acknowledging that the Japanese one main style really is superior.
And I will say that i don’t consider it “cheap” at all that Justin picked Fei… it wasn’t below the belt or cheating because it was totally within the rules. I can’t think of a good word to describe it, but it definitely was “something.” The people who are saying it’s cheap aren’t completely wrong - they just have to find a better word for it. What it really did was it made any potential victory for Wong completely plummet in value as the cards were stacked wayyyy in his favor. I was rooting hard for Daigo exactly for that reason… A lot of people root for the underdog, and Daigo was definitely the underdog in this fight due to Justin’s use of Fei. So, to me it was a little annoying that so many people were rooting for Wong. If Wong wins, then great, he has a tainted victory over Daigo. However, if Daigo wins, it’s a really special victory against (fei) long odds.
Hi guys. bias commentator #3 here. Thanks for all the constructive criticism, you’re really helpful. Here’s a copy paste;
Hey everyone,
I finally got to do my AlphaismRadio interview for Seasons Beatings 4, post-show edition!
My guests were Fugee, Ghaleon and Javits.
In case you aren’t familiar, AlphaismRadio is just some SF related shoutcast that I’ve been doing for a while. In this edition, Fugee and Ghaleon talk about their histories and entrance into the scene, the history of SB and more. Javits helped us recount great moments of this years SB including storytime with Daigo.
If you wanna give it a listen, here’s a download link:

“I don’t play sagat in street fighter 4 because it would literally explode your mind” That’s my interpretation of what daigo said in the podcast. That guy really has earned to be nicknamed “the beast”. I can’t see justin being able to catch up to daigo unless he has some extended time in japan; USA’s talent pool is just to spread out. Thanks for the download link Mr. Skisonic.
I didn’t think anyone considered Daigo the underdog at SB4.
Good shit getting that up so fast, Ski
Interesting how Daigo described his playstyle. Its exactly the same thing David Sirlin said about him.
BTW will HD Remix be getting any love on the SB4 DVD? Marvel and SF4 were mentioned but nothing about HDR.
