lets just say that even though daigos speciality is not ST that doesnt mean you should count him out. this year will just be his hardest EVO challenge i bet. dont forget -never underestimate your opponet!
I was just thinking the other day. The vid commentator on the famous Justin vs. Daigo fight said that the vid was rare footage of Daigo actually angry. How could they tell? Was his face all frowned up? Sounds pretty funny now that I think of it. I can understand why, though. Turtling can be very aggravating for the opponent.
That commentator was me. I’ve been a big fan of Daigo since I first saw his DS vids a loooong time ago. I’ve followed his career and played him at every opportunity ever since.
Daigo hates turtling. It’s not some moral objection to the style–he just finds it frustrating like everyone else does. Anyone familiar with Daigo’s style that watches that entire match (instead of just the famous bit) could tell he was annoyed by Justin’s shenanigans.
The way players like Nuki and Tokido win is clear: they do the highest-percentage techniques with near-perfect execution. They have other virtues like a certain ruthlessness and good basic mindgames, though they do not exceed other top players in those departments. Daigo is something different though (no one knows this better than Nuki himself).
Here’s an article I wrote a few years ago that started the term “psychic DP” to explain some of Daigo’s (and Alex Valle’s) special powers:
I also wrote an analysis of the EVO2K4 Daigo v Justin match that was included with the EVO2K5 program guide. SRK user Dogface has extra copies of that that he’s giving away, but I should have an electronic version of it someplace–if I can think to look for it I’ll post it up.
True that, but that was ST, this is HSF2 a completely different fighting game, so we’ll see how well he will play up against other players who play characters like Hyper Ryu, CE. Guile and CE. Bison. If Daigo is comming to evo, would be interesting to see how well he does this time around, and not to sound like I’m riding on his cock, but from his past times being in evo, he’ll most likely be right up there again in the majority of the fighting games that he enters in no doubt.
co-sign. Daigo has his special Daigo powers, but Dhalsim vs Ryu is a lopsided fight and Gian is good enough to avoid getting baited and make the character advantages into a key issue here.
The knowledge thing is also very true. I learned like 6 new things from Gian just watching him in the few minutes I could get away at last year’s EVO. I learn pretty much nothing new from watching Daigo, other than the already familiar lesson that he knows what you’re thinking, and is going to make you pay.
I do not know Daigo’s opponent, but I am 99% sure that this was a regular tourney match from the SBO that Daigo’s team went on to win. I was watching it over Daigo’s shoulder–it was fairly early on in the tournament, not on the main stage or even on a big screen.
It was not quite as dramatic as it seemed (I believe the team was starting Daigo in the early rounds, but leaving him as the anchor in the finals, meaning Bro Chun and Kurahashi were still around to play if Daigo lost in this one), but still a classic “Daigo” match. I was thinking to myself as it was happening “he’s going to hit that corner too fast to run out the clock safely!” (jumping risked super, and staying on the ground has it’s own risks of course), and the funny part was that I (if not the rest of the crowd) was actually scared for the other guy, not Daigo.
That said, I still say that overhead did a little too much damage, and that Daigo is a cheater.
The top players in the WORLD at Marvel play each other everyday since the game came out, with no lag (CTF in NY). That’s why nor Japan nor DoA players can have a shot at MvC2.
Its too bad he is supposedly retired, i was looking forward to battling him at evo. Oh well im sure there will be other top japanese players to defeat.
