umm, isnt Daigo coming to Evo finally, after hearing about the prize money??
if daigo is coming to EVO ill change the name of the thread to “Daigo Returns:vid collection” after the superman returns movie haha. i already mentioned this earlier in the thread, you should browse for some nice links here.
to NKI: ive heard of the name umechin i think hes still around in 3s or something. not sure here.
some good knowledge around here, im just wondering who has a better resume in capcom fighting games than Daigo?
p.s: i cant wait for EVO
That Umechin player has been on the ST scene quite a while, I think. His Ryu’s probably low to mid of the top tier players in Japan … although there are like twenty odd top Ryu players. I believe he participated in the Master Secret ‘AV’ Cup tourney (vids at combovideos.com).
As for Daigo-sama, well … as everyone knows, he’s got such good prediction skills (and quick reflexes, a must) - all with perfect execution. A very ‘technical’ player, his style is the opposite of flashy; instead his play is very solid, based on high percentage, low risk tactics. Very much focused around zoning and limiting the opponent’s options … and although his knowledge of ST, for example, isn’t up there with the ST-specialists, he knows his chars well enough that for most matches it doesn’t matter.
P.S. What do people think of the Daigo vs. Jeff Schaefer vids? Didn’t Daigo get perfected a few times by Schaefer’s CE-Guile? Perhaps he just couldn’t find a way around a broken matchup
thats a lame excuse for jeff playing well. Its not a broken matchup, its called experience and jeff has what daigo lacked if he was winning. Don’t make excuses when old school players win, just accept it for what it is. Jeff was one of the best from LA in the old school days and I have no doubt he could hold his own against anyone in any game he was well versed in, that is except me and my brother =)
You’re right. I wasn’t trying to play down Schaefer’s wins at all … Just that, looking at the vids, Daigo might have underestimated just how strong CE-Guile is, e.g. several times his distances were wrong and got caught by Guile’s low forward poke. I guess there’s no doubt he lacks experience in AE …
nope, that match was in the “best bout Selection” of the 1st SBO, and Daigo was the anchor of the team since Kurahashi and Otochun were raped by the opposing team’s 1st player.
I have no contact info for the man himself, but I heard first-hand from bas and from Chikyuu that Daigo is going.
Exactly. Daigo’s strength comes not from knowing the game well, but from being able to read your mind.
The other top ST players (like Gian) dominate simply because they know the game so well, not because they have super powers.
I think Daigo lost for two reasons. The first and major reason is because he just doesn’t know pre-ST Street Fighter. The second and minor reason is because he was playing on American sticks on an American cabinet for what was probably the first time in his life.
True, but imo, Daigo did get to pick his ST characters, and if I’m wrong, Jeff didn’t play much at all during the ST days…someone correct me if I’m wrong here. Jeff is extremely good in oldschool, and the two played quite a bit of matches too, I mean, I could reason if it was just 1 or 2 sets, but they played a fairly good amount of matches against one another.
I agree with Graham, Jeff has the experience…I just wished that Tomo would come back into the scene once, would love to see him take on Daigo as well in AE.
that jeff vs daigo stuff is interesting but I don’t put too much weight into it. Anyone taking those results to seriously has too much time on their hands. Schaefer and Daigo both showcased good skill. No need to read too deeply into that, hopefully Schaefer makes it out for AE.
Those were casual matches too … like those A3 casuals where daigo fucked around with Guy all the time. Tournament counts more.
someone post diagos pic
More ST daigo footage found from this thread!
Daigo vs Zazaman at absoultion2k5
Good shit! Absolution was in '04 not '05 … still, nice to finally see some Abs2k4 ST footage. I remember there was some discussion about Zaza’s 2nd place finishing in the original Abs2k4 thread here on SRK. Pushing Daigo to the limit – similar to Schaeffer, a decade long hiatus, and still having the skill. Nice
Pushing Daigo To The Limit …
Just saw the newest episode of purepwnage (purepwnage.com), and for a really popular online show, they mentioned Daigo Umehara and his infamous evo2k5 parry.
…
Daigo seems to have recently won a qualifying tournament at Gamer’s VISION for the 6th Cooperation Cup on 6/18/06 (http://www.game-newton.co.jp/).
This shows that Daigo is not retired from fighting games just yet.
noob question:
how does one edit the title of the thread? i know i can edit my entry but i want to change the title of the thread?
blue : only the mod and admin can do it .
Daigo’s the guy who parried Chun-Li’s whole kick-super with Ken in Third Strike right? That guy was crazy.
