It’s funny how someone sees that Latif looks non-Asian and thinks, “oh he’s American.” As if the entire western world revolved around the USA…
For real. If I went to live in Germany for a few years off a student visa, would I be considered German? You’d bet your ass that if Latif hadn’t made it out of pools, people would’ve been less likely to claim him as their own. I swear this community has some kind of syndrome where when their homegrown hero falls, they go to the next best thing and say “close enough”.
I think we can let Latif decide who he wants to represent. i don’t know the man so i can’t say either way. but i think if you live in a country and you play against that countries players, and you use them to level up and improve, you can claim them if you want. that’s on you though. people are a product of their training environments to a certain degree. according to the announcers, he was repping both the USA and saudia arabia. i don’t know if that’s true though. But him carrying an American flag during matches says a lot.
also the entire western world does revolve around the USA, especially in SF - judging by how much people talk about that country. how many people from other western countries were in the top 8? top 16? they get on youtube and talk shit, sour grapes, we don’t even care.
i remember watching latif lose at a tournament a year ago and hearing people say he was a joke, an online-only player, etc etc. latif proved that he’s the real deal this weekend.
mortal kombat and mvc3 were the highlight of this years evo…AE was a bit boring. latif vs fuudo—yawn, the set they played was a “blowup” and imho “blowups” arent particularly hype-just one sided. they are both superb players (anyone godlike in vf or gg is alright in my book) but the name recognition just isnt there…tournament finshes are becoming more and more like the wsop bunch of random faces at the last table…there are killers everywhere, which i suppose will be the trend of the scene with information about the games easily avalible, streams and online play, whether thats a gd or bad thing remains to be seen
daigo’s the man…period. considering he has a target on his back, im sure everyone who felt they had a chance to win had antidaigo technolgy ready to use (and i doubt daigo had player specfic gimmicks ready for usa/world entrants (it clear he had nothing ready for poongko lol) and he still places if not wins consistently- being the favorite to win all the time is kind of anticlimatic so i understand the “hate” and the desire for someone else to come out on top tho…every story needs a villian
and the previous poster commenting on Federer…federer=G.O.A.T nuff said
Its also funny how someone took only part of my statement decides to inject his opinion based off part of said comment and make it seem like I’m some sort of biased Westerner but gotta love those forum trolls.
Oh and just an FYI, I was saying that because the announcers were also saying he was representing the US/Saudi Arabia like someone mentioned above.
i like that name recognition isn’t there anymore. i don’t enjoy the same big name faces always finishing. it’s a good thing. it’s far more interesting when relatively unknown, unhyped people do well.
less fanboys. more varied players. that’s what i want.
Fuudo deserved it… he completely downloaded latif
imo that seth was the best he just did a few dumb moves that cost him the matches
Daigo loosing was a shock

What’s funny is that Saudi Arabia is actually in ASIA!
If Daigo came out and openly said that he was ashamed of half his fans, I would absolutely love the man.
Latif’s been in America since before SF4 came out, so all his SF4 experience comes from his time in America. Its only logical he’d rep America in the game regardless of not being a citizen since he’s, as someone else put it, a child of the American SF4 community.
And before anyone goes ‘lol you would say that, American’, I’m Australian, it matters little to me either way whether he’s an Arabian or an American player, but he’s pretty clearly an American player for this game.
i wish i won a billion dollars…latif is dat dude
If it makes more sense to you to hate because he plays well and is a nice guy then go ahead. I’ll cheer him for the same reason but at least i’ll have legitimate reasons to do so. Haters have nothing on Daigo, absolutely nothing. So yes i acknowledge that daigo has haters and i’ll treat them like dickheads because thats how they behave. They keep talking about bandwagon fans but these fans are fans for a reason, haters hate because…he has fans? hes skilled? hes a nice guy? - tell me whos the bandwagoner here.
You are the world’s greatest. That is all.
Oh that’s right. They don’t consider the Middle East Europe or Asia anymore. They consider it it’s own thing XD
I’ll say they got Daigo drunk again, just like that other time. I don’t remember the year now 05/06? xP
And yeah… I’m kidding, lighten up if you’re thinking of hitting the reply button.
I hope EVO2k12 will be even bigger and “hypier” than EVO2k11. o/
I don’t think he’s ever faced a Seth player like Poong Ko. When I saw Poong Ko destroy Momochi’s Yun I just knew Daigo would lose to him. Poong Ko has almost completely downloaded Yun and it looks to me like it doesn’t even matter who’s playing him. On the other hand, when I saw Poong Ko having a hard time against Flash Metroid’s C.Viper, I just knew Latif would be able to take him down.
I don’t think Poognko completely downloaded Yun. I remember I saw other Yun players beat him in money match in the after hour stream. You just have to do block couple of his meterless srk, you can win. maybe he downloaded Japanese yun, but not other countries yun ^^
