CvS2 Videos Thread

He did have him beat for free until he started playing like a fucking idiot. Grrrr Tokido.

yea… that blanka vs blanka part was not pretty ><

Back when I had up FinestKO.com a few years ago, I had an article on the site about Jump Cancel Throw Evasions. I had planned to put out a video to accompany the article, but I never got around to putting it together.

Today as I was cleaning out my hard drive, I found some of the raw clips I was going to use for the video. I don’t recall anyone seeing them before, so I figured it would be best to throw them together really quick. Here’s the short little compilation I made:

The video includes:

-Kim doesn’t know how Yun missed a command grab
-Vice goes for a point-blank grab super; Haoumaru will have none of that
-Ken rolls right through a Rock command grab
-Two Zangiefs whiff
-Obligatory Dan appearance
-Athena command grab vs. Yun palm strike
-Looks like a Raiden super throw…no, it’s an Iori command grab!
-Hibiki dodges(!) a Zangief SSPD

Good shit. This could prove to be very useful…or horribly impractical. I’ll let you know.

So how is that done EXACTLY?

Like, up xx qcf + fierce with Ryu for fireball?

This is possible because of a combination of four quirks of the CvS2 game system:

 1. Jumping is not an instant action. Jumps take two frames to get you airborne in the C/A/S grooves, six frames in the P/N/K grooves (for small jumping) and five frames for the 360 characters (Zangief, Raiden, Honda, Rock). You are technically still on the ground until those jump startup frames finish, however…

 2. The only way to evade a throw or grab is to jump. In CvS2, you are considered invulnerable to throws on the very first jumping frame of a jump attempt, regardless of how many jump startup frames your character or groove has. To see this, crouch block against a point-blank Maki or Yamazaki Level 1 grab super, which have four frames before the grab frame comes out. Lv1 super freezes are 3 frames. That gives you one frame to jump out of there, which you can do by simply holding :u: during the super freeze. After the freeze ends, your jump will begin in that first frame, and the grab will miss on the second frame even though you’re still on the ground.

 3. Going back to the 360 characters, the reason why their 360 (actually, 270) moves work is because the special move cancels the jump that would have occurred by hitting an :ub: :u: or :uf: that naturally occurs in the input for the move. Otherwise, you’d jump instead of SPD.

 4. The engine allows for the occasional extraneous directional input for specials and supers. It doesn’t care if there are extra directions in your input buffer as long as the correct ones are in the correct order and are all inputted within the allowed time frame. This means we can make the :qcf: :p: Hadouken into a :qcf: :uf: :u: :p: Hadouken. You’ll get a fireball either way.

If you take all of these properties, when you input an extra :u: in any special move, the game will immediately interpret it as a jump attempt, rendering you unthrowable. However, you can cancel that “jump” with a special move, ala an SPD. Between the frame you hit :u: (the frame you start jumping) and the frame you hit :p: (or any attack button for a special move) you are still on the ground and invisible to any throw.

This window of opportunity is only 1~3 frames for any P/N/K Groove characters, and 1~2 frames for the 360 characters in the C/A/S Grooves. Any other character in the CAS Grooves can’t do this because they leave the ground in two frames, and you need three frames for it to work: one frame to start a jump, one frame to evade the throw, and one frame to cancel the jump while you’re still on the ground. (If I recall correctly, you can’t start a jump and evade it on the same frame; that is, if you’re not already in the air before an opponent’s grab frame hits you, you’re getting thrown.)

Now, I’ve only done this once in casual play, but I deliberately tried doing it, throwing caution (and a lot of life) to the wind. In the heat of the moment, you might have the wherewithal to remember to try this, but the window to do it is so small that you might as well forget about it. Still, it’s really cool to see the look on the other guy’s face when you Rekka right through his Zangief SSPD.

Actually, I totally forgot about this, so I haven’t tried using it in a while. Maybe next time I go to FFA I’ll give it a whirl.

Holy shit thats useful as hell, thanks a bunch.

No wonder.
I was trying to do this in A.

LoL I ran by this video randomly and saw A-Kyo under the name Gunter doing a CC in training mode against N-Iori under the name Buktooth. >.>

BTW: WindyMan is Maki considered one of the 360 characters since she has 360 grab, I don’t play Maki but I saw Iyo do her 360 grab super on someone off the ground, either that or he tiger knee the 360 which I would like to know how the hell that would be done if its possible.

Wow, that is VERY cool. Thanks for sharing.

Good shit.

I never knew about this. Glitching out the game system. I’m not sure how practical it is yet, but you should make a thread and ask a moderator to link to it in that other thread.

Wow, this is some cool stuff, I wonder if Maj ever knew about this.

this desora video is sweet, has the raiden flip glitch too.

Desora is my favorite player, he’s not like an amazing player or something, but his matches are generally good fun. Plus he plays r4 raiden, as his tourney character, now thats love for a character.

I don’t remember where I found it but I was surfing the web and ran upon it randomly, its Iori.
