Alright here is some of the Japan stuff I promised earlier. I’m ripping this straight from my blog, so I don’t care if the whole vibe ain’t fitting with SRK. I ain’t about to edit that shit.
Monday
Campbell was telling me on the train that my CVS2 game was gonna randomly be judged against some pGroover from the US that was also in Japan at the time. I was confident in myself, so that shit didn’t really phase me. We eventually get to MORE and I’m not really feeling to play that much, so we go out to get some food before coming back. I manage to win my very first game and Campbell says everyone always loses their first game at MORE for some reason (the guy I played wasn’t that good so whatever). I notice immediately that the sticks aren’t really working well for me. I kept getting the shit where I would randomly jump or get the wrong angles just trying to move my character around. That shit was REALLY frustrating, and I end up losing almost every game I played at MORE from that day on. NOTE: Even the random scrubs at MORE were somewhat decent, so not being able to execute consistently made it WAY hard for me to win against almost anyone. Doods I felt were not as good as me would give me extremely close matches. Doods who were comparable to me would win somewhat convincingly. Doods who were better than me would outright destroy the shit outta me. I played Dan a few times, and yeah that shit was horrible. I went into the matches pretty confident since I had practiced a lot with Choi prior to going to Japan. Dan’s style however, was pretty different from the way Choi plays. Choi is more about rushing you down and getting you to lose your cool so you end up mashing and eating shorts into super. Dan is much more controlled and SNEAKY. He’ll stay perfectly out of range from your normals and then just throw out a lot of smart RC fb’s or funky kicks. Once he gets in on you though, that shit is pretty scary. He had an extremely good close range ground/wakeup game where he would rely a lot on smart guard strings and ch jab combos. When you kinda got too scared to do anything due to his ch jabs and RC’s he would just do pause, grab like hella times in a row. His good aggressive zoning ability also made it a nightmare to reset your stun meter. It seemed like the entire round would go by without your stun meter ever resetting because he would always keep that shit active with well timed pokes and RC fb’s. Overall I would say Dan was definitely one of the most impressive things I saw in terms of Japanese CVS2. His style wasn’t like anything else I had ever seen, and he definitely looked sharper playing at MORE than when I had seen him play during EVO. It was pretty frustrating playing him because he was already the better player, and I was constantly failing on the sticks so he would just own me up like nothing. Horrible. Watching him play however was really cool. There were also a handful of other players that Campbell said were really good, but just not known. When compared with the Japan-elite however, those guys were probably one step down. I didn’t really get to play those other guys, but from what I saw they were probably good enough to hang with most of the top players here. We ended up leaving MORE before it closed cuz I was kinda tired and just not hella feeling the sticks (I get REALLY frustrated when weird stuff consistently comes because I’m not properly adjusted to the sticks).
Tuesday
I ended up playing hella games with Campbell that night before drinking that Japanese likka. His style is still pretty similar to when I last played him (hella months back before he left to Japan), but he was WAY more solid and sharp. He plays a rushdown Iori that makes you kinda scared everytime he’s able to get in close enough for a mixup. He has so many setups for Iori’s command grab, and it’s pretty easy for Iori to hit confirm his BnB so you always had to worry about those mixups. I would sometimes get desperate and just try to DP, but that risk/reward factor was hella not in my favor. If you try to jump out of a mixup Campbell would be quick enough to run up and AA with Iori’s c.hp. You really did have to just out-guess him whenever he got close. Something else that would work was simply to keep him away from you, but for some reason I would get myself into retard mode and throw out some laggy ass normals to keep him away and he would roll through them to punish. I got pretty frustrated at myself cuz even when I was BAITING the roll I wouldn’t be able to punish it. Dunno why, but yeah I was dumb. I don’t remember Morrigan being as bad to deal with as Iori, but that was probably because the matchup was always in my favor. Even then he would find ways to get through my bullshit to start his overhead/crossup game. I really should’ve been winning that matchup a lot more than I did, but I get pretty much 0 exp vs a Morrigan of his level so that shit was pretty hard. At least I wasn’t scrubbed to the point where his Morrigan would clean up my entire team. Another thing Campbell did pretty well was to know when to watch for certain aspects of my offense. He was able to AA my low jumps at a rate good enough to where I abuse them. I always went into the Blanka vs Hibiki fight pretty confident, but his Hibiki was actually REAL SOLID. There was nothing flashy about it, but he managed to keep my Blanka from overwhelming her with his goodass normals and low jumps. Here’s a secret: eliminate the use of Blanka’s low jump and 95% of k-Blankas instantly become useless. Luckily for me k-Blanka is probably my best character, so I knew enough with him to still do well even though I couldn’t abuse his low jump that much. There were a lot of things I had to adjust to playing Campbell’s Hibiki (another char I have almost 0 exp against). Most scrub Hibiki’s I’m used to playing don’t really try to mount an offense, so I can get away with just rushing down, killing guard meter, JD’ing hella AA’s, mixing up with hella grabs, etc… Campbell’s would actually have an attack plan so there were a lot of times where I had to beef up my defense so I wouldn’t get hit by some of the trickier shit like her crossups or fastass wakeup c.wk’s. Also Hibiki’s low jump (I think mp) works hella well vs k-Blanka, and the only counter I found for it was a SUPER EARLY s.hk or slide (which isn’t really safe if he just empty jumps instead). Overall the games were pretty fun, and I couldn’t really complain much about execution since I got to use my own stick. It did get frustrating at times though to get hit by Iori 50/50’s in succession. I’ll probably play him a lot more once he gets back to Norcal so we’ll see how I do then.
Typing these up take a good amount of time, so I will probably end up doing like one a day. If I ever finish the entire thing it should cover mon, tues (both already done), thurs, fri, sat. I can’t remember if I played on wed. Maybe Campbell can jog my memory. Did we play that one day we ended up going clubbing?
