CvS2 - Lifetimeboy's P-Groove Thread!

I know alot of people think P is the weakest and think its a joke…or even underestimate it…And for those peeps a hot ass whoopin is bound to come cause if u can play with any other groove u can with P too…Its all about the player and P has some sick shit to offer if u play it right…So this is for the few who do like the groove…I personally have been coming up with a crazy style with P that I will hopefully be able to post up with some vids online…So post ur opinions and strats good or bad…Post up your teams and what makes ur P style unique…And by the way P on P matches are too good…Try them out in casual play and u’ll see what I mean…Peace…

good shit. what about team formation? most grooves adhere to the R1/R1/R2 formula, but P-groove can mix it up and still be very effective. in particular, i remember when gee-o played P-blanka/R2 cammy/chun li or sagat in the NCR2 vids i saw. it made sense, because most people will counter P-groove with A-groove, and with A-sakura second. cammy already has an advantage over sakura, and the extra life means that cammy can eat a shoshosho custom and still land a parry into super to kill sakura. because after sakura is peaced out, the P-groover has a much better chance.

any thoughts on that?

PS- the P-groove dream team should be P-kyo/rolento/R2 cammy. you know what i’m talking about LTB:D

I use P-Kyo/Geese/Cammy-2 right now as a fun team. I heard Cammy was supposed to be stupid good in P because parry anything = free hp.

What makes Kyo good in P-Groove? Parry into s.hk?

Who else does very well in P?

Anything I should be looking to accomplish with this team? Besides winning of course? Match-ups and such?

kyo is great in P (especially as a battery) because he can do damage easily without a super, and with meter his combos are just plain wrong. his ground game is solid without roll/rc, and while an alpha counter could help, dash and low jump are great for his mixup game.

sagat jumps with HK, kyo parry’s and combos with close s.HK xx qcf+MK,K -> dp+MK -> deep qcb,hcf+P super (hold P, quick release) -> qcf+LP,hcb+P,P -> ggpo

he also has (along with cammy) a long range parry into super (far s.HK xx qcb,hcf+P) that will punish most of the top-tier’s zoning pokes (sak HK, cammy HK, sagat HP, yama HK, blanka HP, etc)

This is mainly directed at LTB or anyone else who happens to use P-Groove Shoto’s -

I really enjoy using P-Groove as it is so 3S-esque, however shotos don’t seem to get much out of it at all. I mean small jump is nice and parry is cool, but the most effective thing I’ve found using say P-Ken is “knockdown, crossup sj.mk xx qcbx2+HK.” There are of course other things than crossup sj.mk’s xx specials/supers, but I can’t see very much. My biggest problem with P is that when I look at P-Ken and A-Ken I just don’t see much in the favour of P-Ken. ‘A’ brings roll, alpha counters, and cc, which IMO doesn’t come close to the parry/sj that ‘P’ gives. Then add to that P has a SLOW meter and LOW guard bar…

I really do like P, so please try and coax me into using P-Ken. Tell me any things that I may not be seeing. For example I haven’t seen much P-Ken gets in the areas of option select parrying or empty jumping… am I missing something?

I use Blanka,/Vega/Cammy r2. What are some option select things to do taht help this team in particular? Or just be good in general.

People complain about P groove meter building slow, but I don’t think its really a problem. As long as you can sit on it makes it a threat. Plus, you can just cancel normals into specials to give you that extra bit of meter that you need.

P-Ken is really good. Low jump mixups give him a lot of options, plus he has good normals. In addition to a very strong meaty game. Parry into cr xx hurricane kick super does good damage. Plus off of a parry he can at the very least get st lk xx hcf+k. If you know how to use Ken, cr short x 2 into super should be no problem to land if you can get in.

P-Kyo has parry --> cr mp into qcf+lp chain. One low jump mix up hurts a lot with Kyo. And if you get a knockdown Kyo gets really really scary. Look at the Kyo threads for discussion about it.

What types of problems will I come up with using those teams? And how do I practice Parrying at home??

I was preaching this same thing 2 years ago. I’m glad to see that most of my predictions about p-groove have come true :D.

I am trying to get into P-Groove myself because I loved 3S and am still trying to get good at parrying in 3S, my team in CVS2 is:
Ken/Rock/HoahMaru

my biggest problem is the same as “Ranevski” , Ken plays better in A to me, but I really want to get use to parrying, so i am trying to learn P-Groove, when ever I parry I cant seem to get a good counter hit in, and that is probably the reason my parrying skills suck!
what are some good counters for parrying the following with my team:

mid-range fireballs(hadouken, tiger etc…)
Dragon Punches(tiger uppercut, shoryuken etc…)
Low attacks(trips etc…)( this right here is what i really wanna get good at because I am good at predicitng when my brother-in-law wants to use C.HK…)

any help would be appreciated…

This is how use Cammy. I try to anti-air all jumps with HK Cannon Spike and pke with s.HK and d.MK and when I get in close I s.HP then follow with: s.HP, s.HK or walk up d.MP + d.MK xx LK Cannon Drill or throw. I find I don’t need to parry much this way. What should I do to incorporate more parries in my game to get the most out of Cammy in P?

Depends on the range, really. If the fireball is parried too far away to get anything to hit, you’re better off just closing the gap into a guard string. If its up close, parry cr mk xx hurricane kick super.

Basically, if you can punish with parry into normal then cancel into super, do so.

The V - One of the annoying things about Cammy is that its really hard to get in on her in P groove. She had good defensive options already, parry helps her a lot. So if you want to build meter from far away with cr/st mp, you can do so and still have time to react to whatever the opponent does. If you have meter and they jump, try parry cr mk xx super. If you need more hit confirm, try parry cr mp, far st fierce xx super.

I love p-groove a lot and I’m trying to get into it a lot more. Right now my team is iori/r2ken/sagat. im going to try kyo out in p now that I hear all this hubbub about good ish with him in P. the best part about P is parrying crap people try to throw out to chip like fireball supers. I find that almost ever firball super has the same parry rythm. Oh and replicating Diago’s awesome finish at Evo is just too good. I sat for about an hour just trying to figure out the parry rythm for that just for the novelty in it. It becomes really helpful in learning how to parry stuff later too. I know im going to say something you guys already know, but for those who don’t, Chun has got three atk strings in her kick super (Lvl 3 version). 8 hits, 8 hits, 1 hit. for flash you can parry it all by parrying the first string, pausing, parry the next string, pause, parry the last hit. OR, for practicallity, parry the first string and use a jab 0r something really fast and combo from that. If you have a char that can cancel into something awesome then do it and don’t dilly dally,. There is a window to do ish, but it’s not big.

LTB: Why P-Rolento?

And… Is P-Rolento/Yama/Sagat a good team? I saw you using P-Rolento/Sagat/Blanka at Evo and was intrigued, but I can’t use P-Blanka worth a damn :(.

p-rolento is really strong, almost always has a parry -> normal xx super with meter and has parry -> c.mk xx circles. like most good p-groove characters (kyo, cammy, vega, sagat, blanka, rugal, etc) he also gains punishing range when he has meter far s.mk xx tripwire is 1 frame slower than cammy far s.hk xx super

he can also link tripwire off of either jab, c.mk, lj.mp, lj.rh, crossup j.mk -> close s.hp

he misses out on his alpha counter, but parry gives him great option selects to go along with his great low jump game and his retarded fast dash.

edit: also builds meter like crazy

now when you say link tripwire you mean combo into it, not an actual link right?

I know it links off meaty s.mp and maybe a counter hit jab, but if it links off all of those i have been missing a whole lot with my rolento.
