**Old topic, and CvS1, but I’m bored.
I think Ryu is a bit better than Ken. Both are strong, probably upper second tier, but Ryu’s slightly better than Ken. With Ryu’s hop kick, he can get in easier than Ken. If Ken turtles up, with his DP juggle combos and his RK, it can be annoying to get to him. But he can’t do much against say Guile, who locks him down completely. All he can do is try to hit pokes with DP and link reppa into it. Ryu with his hop kick can go over ground attacks, and projectles, including sonic boom. So Guile players have to think carefully and not just throw out predictable sonic booms or low attacks. Hop kick also gives Ryu a tool to use against sweep happy characters like EX Vice and King.
Ryu’s other selling point is of course the Shin Shoryuken. Not so much hitting it, but the threat of it. Once Ryu gets a level 3, the entire match-up changes. There’s certain things the opponent just can’t do anymore. Fighting against Ken with level 1 is more or less the same as Ken with Level 2/3. Don’t jump (when do you ever jump in this game if your name isn’t EX Vice/Nak?), be careful not to get your pokes DP’ed, and if you get knocked down, be wary of the cross-up. That’s about it. Ryu can hit the ShinSho off lots of stuff though. Once, I poked using stand rounhouse with Terry, and that got ShinSho’ed. I swear, Ryu hit Terry’s shoelaces and sucked him in for all 4 hits. I also got ShinSho’ed doing Tornado Kick with King. So you can bet I didn’t do that kind of stuff anymore against a Level 3 Ryu. Think about it - just the threat of ShinSho changes the opponent’s entire gameplan, and the course of the match. That’s one hell of a powerful tool Ken just doesn’t have.
master akuma: I’ve seen you question Nakoruru before, and even though she’s been covered I’m just going to lay it all out this once.
CvS1 is a really simple game, especially compared to its peers. The engine just doesn’t have all that much to it. Most characters had maybe 3-5 good attacking options. Nak had like 20. At least.
As has been said, her crossup is sickengly good. With the angle it comes in at, you can’t try to anti-air it…it doesn’t matter if you try to DP or just C.FP, she goes right over it and you whiff, so basically she gets her B&B for free now, which also happens to hurt a lot. She can go for her crossup if she knocks you down, and generally when your character’s back hits the floor in CvS1 against Nak, you are in “completely dicked” position. You’ll see why soon.
Nak’s floor slide has virtually no recovery. So she can throw them out almost randomly and still be safe. Even if you block, she recovers before you can hit her with even a c.short. The only thing you can really do is try to throw, but most good Nak players will tech it, so at best it’s a stalemate. But if you weren’t blocking low for whatever reason, she hits you. And it also happens to knock you down, which puts you in “completely dicked” position.
It’s hard to take the fight to Nak. You can’t really jump at her because she can use her bird projectile as anti-air. Oh yeah, this knocks you down. You can’t really get around it. If you try to roll from a close distance, she’s going to punish you one way or another, and it’s probably going to hurt. If she doesn’t use the bird, her c.fierce is pretty good as a non-special anti-air, and if you somehow manage to sweep her and try to hit a cross-up, or just a meaty jump in, if she has level 2 or better you’re going to eat the bird super. And of course, this knocks you down.
Her dive off the bird is stupidly fast. It’s very hard to block on reaction to it, especially if you’re trying to think about all the other ways Nak can come at you. Again, virtually no recovery, so she can do it and be relatively safe. And oh yeah, this is a knockdown move too. Back to completely dicked position you go.
When you are on the ground, Nak’s dash will actually hop over the grounded character, serving as a cross-up. So she can actually cross you up while on the ground, and go for her B&B…did I mention it really hurts?
So once you get knocked down, Nak can come from high-forward with the very fast bird dive, stay where she is for low-forward, use her ridiculous cross-up for high-reverse, or hop over you for low-reverse. If you try to use a wake-up, the odds are pretty good that you’ll miss and she gets to hit her B&B for free. Which, guess what? Knocks you down. So now you have to do it again, but with less life. Fun!
Basically, she forces you into a defensive position and wears you down until she wins. In order to beat her, you have to play smart - try and anticipate what the Nak player will do and counter-attack smartly. Not as easy as it sounds.
There’s a lot more to her, but I haven’t played CvS1 in ages and this is just what I remember.
And on Guile - his normals all had great range and priority, and his Flash Kick was bestowed upon him from GOD HIMSELF. Seriously, if you jump and Guile Flash Kicks, he wins. The end. It had a funky hitbox too, you couldn’t cross him up, and sometimes you’d just be trying to run the fuck away and he hits you FROM BEHIND. So it forces you to stay grounded, and from there he still owns you with his great normals, and sonic boom (rolling = a very bad idea). Not to mentions someone forgot to give his supers ANY recovery whatsoever. **
