Current State of the Skullgirls Scene

Knowing that a huge patch is coming is very bad for fighting games, look at SF X Tekken, a lot of people stopped playing because they are waiting the DLC chars to get the “full game”.

Also I think the dev team needs to say something about DLC chars of Skullgirls, they can show us a little every week

its not the patch thats effecting the drop off… when other games have a patch coming up people still play the game regardless. SF X T has been dropping off because people don’t like the game, in skullgirls people don’t have the drive which i said they lose really bad or something and then they just stop playing it.

Part of making the game right is giving people a feel of consistent progress, where they see where they need to improve next and see how. There’s no reason skullgirls players are inherently less motivated than SF4 or MvC3 players.

I agree with you whole heartedly Pali. First couple weeks were big but now it seems to be drying up. I still try and play a couple hours every night if i can, or every other day at least. Even if i get bodied, i try and learn to adapt as much as possible. Going against you, sure i lost a lot, but i the majority of matches i felt like i improved bit more each time. in all honesty in a generalization the games these days dont give gamers teh necessary drive to improve so much more than just mash until you win strategy. In the end i have fun and learn more by losing than winning all the time.

My thoughts: I think this game is a victim of too many fighters. It’s a good game, and I think everyone knows it. The problem is, being a good game just isn’t enough, when you have other good games. On top of that, Skullgirls isn’t really a good pick for a side game, since it’s complicated in terms of memorizing combos, and it had a few flaws in other areas. Those things doomed it as a side fighter.

I can’t see this game surviving Persona, especially if it doesn’t patch right after EVO. It might have a future on the PC though.

This game may be the biggest (and least deserving) victim of the glut of quality 2012 fighting games- if this game had come out when say AH3, I’d have kept with it.

No, the fact is this game has no comeback mechanic. I.E SF4’s ultra or Mvc3 x-factor, someone who mashes with those things can potentially get a win some how.

In skullgirls you cannot ever come back from losing by mashing, so they continue to lose and then just give up the game. It’s not all about winning guys when i first started playing fighting games i got bodied too, losing is the way of getting better.

the only reason I mentioned it is because I think you’re going down a blind alley here. If you’re blaming the less serious players, you’re not doing or thinking anything productive at all.

You can work and do all the things Chibi was talking about or you can (and I’m paraphrasing) say ‘well the problem is those scrubs don’t want to work’. One is more productive than the other :stuck_out_tongue:

Comeback mechanic or no, I don’t see the current position that Skullgirls is in as unexpected, and the people who leave because they are getting bodied all the time probably would still leave even if there was a Skullgirl factor. KidPanda and I are both players who are quite novice at the game and yet we’re still here, so I think your statement is too broad a generalization. Quite a few of us found the drive to improve.

As a new IP Fighter, we should’ve known it was/is going to take a longer time to get a foothold in the community and develop the audience you guys crave. A huge gamer mentality right now is that games are meant to be played for a week or two before you trade it in and get something new, fighters no exception. That compulsive desire for novelty has been around for years and is also a contributing factor to the drop off of /many/ fighters, shooters, and MMOs. Don’t blame them for doing exactly what they were going to do. Consider the number of players who bought, and then dropped SF4 two weeks later. (Hint: It’s a massive, massive number)

SG can and will survive Persona, which rest assured, is going to see a huge influx of new players who almost unanimously abandon it in 2 weeks leaving only the dedicated players left, kind of like exactly what happened here (And with almost every fighter that isn’t Capcom)

Having Weekly updates on the progress of the DLC is, above being tedious for the developer, really only going to appeal to people like us, who are already the fanbase. If you really want to think of ideas on how to get new people into the game, you must examine the audience that lives outside SRK. How would you market this game to the people you went to school with? Do they really care about incremental DLC updates, or that the patch is incoming?

I just don’t want to see this turn into a bitching thread when it could just as easily be a collaborative scene building group effort. Put as much effort as you do playing the game into sharing it with others, and let us know what we, the rest of the SRK community (And don’t put the onus on Reverge, dudes are already breaking their backs here), can do to help.

ive not really seen many people playing online recently, say this last week or 2, but then again it is only a week before EVO, so anybody who is not totally committed to this game (ie a whole lot of people) are gonna be focusing on the main EVO games atm.

also i dont think its the lack of a comeback mechanic that is hurting the game at all. i certainly dont think having details of a patch a few weeks after release has done the game any good though. it certainly hasnt increased the numbers of players, thats for sure.

i wish i had some kind of capture card or something else i would be contributing some (probably bad) footage whether it be combo vids/mixups/online matches/whatever.

So I have a new job and within the month I will have a new set up so that I can start streaming Skullgirls whatever.

Look forward to it~

There’s basically no scene where i live, but I expect things to liven up more when the patch comes out. I seriously have more fun playing this game against good people than any other game out right now.

EvO Skullgirls Side-tourney generated 102 entrants (not bad with all things considered)

The place looked fairly crowded and they seemed satisfied with the turnout

They also announced officially no Evo stream sadly. Top 8 will be posted some time after though

I’m not in the shot. :frowning:

I don’t know who that guy in the v cut shirt with the chest tattoo is, but he looks like a real dink.
A real dink that had better have got my t-shirts before they sold out on the first day, Girly!

Oh no, it most DEFINITELY is.

god this game sucks online there is noone on xbox ever
a lot of times i feel like im the only person PERIOD trying to play (no games available to join, noone joins my open lobby for 30+ minutes, no quickmatches)

lol

I played Rithli in the newest build yesterday, he was running month stuff with a team of Double/Paraoul (Double on point) and I lost so bad lol.

I need like two or three play sessions to get used to people, especially since I just dont go DERRRRRRRR DOUBLEE SHOT SHOT SHOT anymore.

DOES ANYONE WANT TO JOIN ME IN STARTING A SKULLGIRLS PODCAST? I NEED SPACE TO UPLOAD IT. LET ME KNOW!

So a little over 100 entrants for SG for the side tourney. Shout outs to everyone who actually entered and supported the game. I was busy helping with Evo the whole weekend and didn’t have any free time unfortunately. That and I haven’t played the game in months due to the lack of a scene in my area lol. Hopefully more people will play the game when the patch drops. Only time will tell.
