Current State of the Skullgirls Scene

One of the guys from our two man scene here got 7th. I really like what I saw of the new patch, though I didn’t get to play it (too busy being lame with P4A). That being said, I’m going to start trying to get back into the game now that I’ve quit Marvel. I also think once more people catch on to the new patched build it’s going to raise a little more interest in the game than there currently is. I can visibly see what the speed increase has done and the fact that you can’t do match long Fortune combos now, I think it makes spectating a little more fun for those who don’t know much about the game.

I’d like to quote this for truth. I’m usually online for hours after work and only get to play five maybe six matches ( If I even get a decent match out of any of them ) I’ve almost given up trying to play online. In fact, I haven’t even attempted all weekend because it feels like I’m wasting my time when I could be playing things like Battlefield or Skyrim :.

The IRC channel is always dead, I pretty much spam asking for matches every hour when I’m on.They just disappear into the sound of people pinging out and auto-joining back in. So no matches that way.

The XBL Metatag for Skullgirls is usually a dud too. 90% of the time everyone is playing Marvel or SF. Lately I’ve seen a lot of Maxx Anarchy ( I guess that’s what it’s called ). Rarely is someone on Skullgirls.

The only practice I can get is online, since the closest thing to a scene is a good hour drive away.

I wish I had the money for Max Anarchy…

Wait I didn’t know you were Australian, where are you from?

Really hoping I can go to BAM, I feel confident I can at least make it out of pools again, especially if I don’t have Justin Wong in my way, again.

I’m in melbourne

The Scene where I am isnt that bad we have a decent amount of players every week more to come now that EVO is over and a few people wanna give it a try. We even have our own stream that runs every tuesday night at our local tournaments.

You wouldn’t be Liam would you? lol

Are you someone I know?

Yeah, I’m Liam, I think I know who you are but you haven’t been to the recent tourneys?

Not since Shadowloo Showdown, had work pretty much 6 days a week for a few months. Was at the EVO stream party though, but not enough people signed up for Skullgirls to go ahead there it seems.

Hopefully should be able to come to events again from a couple of weeks time, not doing weekends during uni haha.

I should have known if I looked at the team in your sig…

I’ve just been hanging around waiting on the patch before I make moves. But yeah Actually attending with the intent to fuck the shit up and take everyones cash helps fuel that competition. But You don’t expect to grow Redwood trees in 24 hours so this should be treated the same.

Fill your gas tank up and start driving then buddy.

Driving an hour to play other people > Waiting hours at home to play no one~

Age of Fools when I get back to Melbourne I’ll happily play you in SG’s

I’m tempted to canoe 2500 miles across the Pacific to reach SoCal.

after going to evo, my impressions of the scene are as follows:

100% less neck beards then I assumed there would be and everyone was pretty nice.

If you guys want to commit to this game then you have to fly out to majors. It’s the only way.

This is what people have been doing with Guilty Gear and UMK3 for years.

I really wish it was that simple, lol. Working at Walmart doesn’t exactly leave me with a lot of spending money though, especially when I’m trying to get back into school.

Maybe it’s because I come from an FPS background. I feel like the online play is what is really needed for any game in this era though. I’m sure there are plenty of people like me who live out in the middle of nowhere, who play at a competitive level, but have no competitive competition nearby or don’t have the time or money. People such as myself get discouraged when it takes forever just to find one match, thinking the game is dead in the water.

I know if I paid for Skullgirls, and went to play online right now. I’d probably sit around for ten minutes, and think to myself that this game must be bad if no one is playing it online ( This is of course with no prior knowledge of anything about the game ). Then go play something else, never to attempt to play again. I understand this is ‘shallow’ I guess the word is. Sadly I’m pretty sure that is how the average gamer does it though. With so many games out to play, Skullgirls will simply become another game that sits on the shelf to collect dust. What good is a two player game with no second player?

Another thing, if I spend my money every week to go play with locals, there is no possible way I’d ever be able to go to another major such as MWC. The local scene is nice, they don’t really do the community or the game as a whole very good though. Even if they streamed live with commentary, the only people who are going to watch ( most likely anyway ) are people who already own and/or play the game.

First impressions are everything, and as of right now Skullgirls has no impression outside of the fans it already has who only seem to support the game locally and not as a whole.

I check the Skullgirls website every day hoping the forum will be up so I can find people to play. I sit online for hours hoping to find someone to play. I spam the IRC channel for hours hoping to find someone to play.

This isn’t directed at anyone in particular, just my opinion on the matter. I’m fairly new to the FGC so if anything I’ve said is obviously wrong, please correct me.

P.S. I understand people are waiting for the patch, what about the thousands of people who don’t go to or even know about the SRK boards though? They walk in to a dead community ( the online ) not realizing the work that is about to go into the game and it’s improvements. Never to pick it up again, because they have no way of ever knowing what is really going on.

I dunno how many people play SG in my area, but I find people online relatively easy.

You must not play XBL then. I always have my region set to ‘any’ and can almost never find a match.

Unranked matches are pretty much worthless. Only person I ever see in a room is Baiken (sp?) who lives in Japan. Even attempted to play them once, but the 200+ ping was not worth it. I sit in unranked room for hours without even a nibble.

Even ranked matches take forever ( on average 30-45 minutes for a single match, not including if the ping is even worth playing on ), and I usually find the same person over and over and over until they decide they are done. :\

What is your magical secret?!?!?!?!

Online ranked has pretty much been worthless from day one, everyone is free and usually it’s usually laggy for me because they’re on east coast.

It’s pretty hard to level up with online at all because most of the top players only play local. Never once had I ever played Duckator online, but that guy rocked my shit at EVO.

And I sit and wait with both my consoles on for like 3 hours a day waiting for people to play this game with.
