There is a need for a more specialized police task force and there’s proof of that with some standoffs or all-out mass murders we’ve seen in this country in the last 20 years. Regular police cannot deal with the threat of automatic gunfire and small militias, especially in a country where you can buy almost any weapon you want freely. What should be debated is how these special teams are deployed and how well armed do we want them to be.
Detaining =/= arresting.

He was arrested though. He was in custody for about 6 hours I believe. Once they put you in handcuffs and take you to the station, that’s an arrest.

I wasn’t aware he was actually taken in. I only watched the video, and at that point, it was only detainment. I went through the OP of the reddit thread and saw the news report and the tweets. No mention of actual arrest, although after doing a bit of research it appears you are right.
Not sure if an arrest was justified, but that’s up to a law expert I guess. It’s pretty damb stupid that swatting is a thing. Gotta be a pretty big shithead to think that doing this to someone is funny.
Wow, I didn’t know about swatting. If that guy had gotten up when they came through the door with his headphones in hand, or walked outside to see what was going on, some anxious swat team member could have shot him.

This only shows English speaking nations, and Asian nations are even more strict. If this were to show up on his record, and let’s say somehow he was set to go to some tournament in Korea, if the arrest showed up on his record, he may not be able to get into the country and could be turned away at the border. And all of this, no matter where you go, depends on which border agent you get and what mood they’re in when you enter.
Basically, this could ruin lives.

I can’t help but groan over how utterly stupid this sort of thing is. Why waste the time on someone who’s just trying to entertain some people? Why take the risk of getting caught over a laugh? I can understand doing some stuff for the lulz, but when you mess with someone’s life like this and make the police waste their time and resources, it just doesn’t become funny anymore. It’s not often I wish painful prison gangbangs on people, but this is one of those times.
Kids nowadays live in bubbles where they honestly think the outside world away from their computer doesn’t affect them. It’s not just stupid kids being bored, it’s stupid kids absolutely blind to the fact that there are other people who make up the slice of the world they inhabit.
Swatting is only possible because overreaction is the standard. When innocent people die, there will be a conversation. Conversely, when innocent rich people die, there will be change…
When you live in front of your computer, you become removed from society to some extent. Everyone becomes a screen name, you don’t have any natural sympathy, and because you are so empty as a person the only thing you can do is try and hurt other people emotionally however you can for your own amusement.
This is a horrible thing to do to someone.
