"Critique My Akuma!" Video Blog Thread

Hey folks, in need of a bit of guidance. I’m sure most of you have seen my most recent play, and aside from the last Vega match in that video its all new content. So I’ve read through the comments but still have some general questions.

  1. I was told to zone better but I’m not sure how to go about it. I’m used to ST/HDR where fireball pressure is much more effective and stages are smaller (I also play Vega and Cammy, characters with excellent pokes). So, I’m going to throw a few hypothetical scenarios. Let’s say I’m facing a character that can easily evade my fireballs. I can’t get a palm knockdown because he’s moving and can thus hit me out of it. Spamming St. HK is ineffective since the 2nd hit whiffs on many opponents. At this point am I looking to get into cr. mk range and using that as my main string? And sweeping on punish? I know I can throw sweep from max distance and be OK, but throwing it in close leaves me open to jump attacks and the like. I’ve been planning to use cr. jab/cr. lk more as a way of pulling fast hit-confirms without leaving myself exposed to FA’s and jumps.

  2. The vortex. I’ve noticed in many of Tokido’s videos that he’s able to constantly Divekick straight into a combo. Now, the kicks don’t look to be cross-ups so why exactly is the opponent not blocking? Perhaps they’re reversal mashing? I have noticed that sometimes on wake-up my divekicks will be blocked and my block string won’t do much. Once the string is finished I’m a neutral position and don’t know what to do. This is where I start throwing out somewhat-random sweeps to try and get the UTK, but that’s when I start eating FA’s and jump-ins. Eh, ideas?

Hopefully this isn’t too much to digest.

ty for the feed back, ill upload a few more once i get my monitor back, sf4 is my first fighting game ( fps whore here), can you gimme a few pointers on the fei match and the ryu matchup, also please tell me a good frame trap for akuma since i know only c.lk s.lk. c.lk tatsu… ty again

some good frame traps are c.lp c.lp c.mp or c.lp s.hp or c.mp cmp or c.lp walk up c.lp walk up c.mp…i mean, yopu have to be creative but c.mp is akuma’s main frame trap…but you gotta switch the timings to make it work.

Pointers on the ryu matchup: simply gotta have strong fundamentals in this MU…once you knock him down you can vortex him or not depending on who you’re facing…if you see he’s a srk happy scrub, just bait him with df palm or crossup tatsu. If he’s good, just vortex him like any other character until he has ultra, then be more careful but a properly spaced df kick will ALWAYS stuff any of his wakeup srk except the EX one. A good ryu will know this so he’ll probably try to block on wakeup most of the times if he sees you demon flipping (not always, he might take some more risks once he has ultra).
Other than that, again, good zoning and footsies are fundamental…that’s something you’ll learn with time.

Vs Fei: he’s basically a ryu with a worse reversal but better pokes…he has to block both hits of s.hk so you can kinda abuse that move…don’t get too predictable or he’ll stuff it with his reakkas. Once you’re cornered keep your cool and wait for the best moment to air tatsu out…teleport is too risky. Once you’re far away ZONE ZONE ZONE…yuo can actually zone fei quite well, just do it from the right distance and if he ex CW through your hadoken just s.hp or c.mk ultra him…stick with s.hp if you’re not REALLY confortable with c.mk AA ultra since you gotta do that one really fast.
His ex flame kick will stuff your df kicks but you can make him whiff using the hk flip and punish him afterwards…watch out if he has U2. Any time he blocks one of your sweeps he can do 3 rekkas so be carefull.

That’s about it, but I think you should work a bit more on your fundamentals/ combos before worrying about specific matchups.

once you got ultra people cannot jump or focus your sweeps. Make them eat a few demons and you’ll see they’ll become more carefull. All the basic principles of zoning and footsies don’t apply if you’re facing scrubs, so just forget that and look to AA them or do some stupid jump ins, they probably won’t punish.

Word? Play him in a set I want to see the vids/results.

not terrible but definitely not that good…

Anyways, a few tips for you:

  • AA!! AA!! AA!!!

  • do those ex air fb way lower to the ground…you missed quite a few combo opportunities on those.

  • he was teching your “c.lp > tick throw” ALL THE TIME…how about some different setups or baiting him into teching by doing like “c.lp [he blocks] > hp srk”. You had the bars to do that quite a few times.

  • don’t jump in on ryu so much…he wasn’t AAing you (and this alone doesn’t make him a GOOD ryu), but still…

  • if you’re comboing a crouching opponent, do some easier and more damaging combos…c.lp c.lp throw or c.lp c.lp c.lp c.mk xx hado is difficult and does ass damage. I’m sure you can do the more damaging ones, maybe you were lacking good reflexes that day

This.

Myself, I’m trying to put it into my head to do cr.LP , cr. MP xx EX tatsu but the LK tatsu input is so part of my muscle reflexes now…

took me some time to get rid of that…now when they’re crouching my hands automatically do clp clp c.mp ex tatsu even if sometimes i wanna do ex hado for mixups.

I don’t think I’ve ever used Ex Hado… Ever. But when I was up against AsianTom in casuals he’d used it when I was crouched and then mix it up between xup tatsu, command dive kick and a demon flip. I think I’ll be adding it to my bag o tricks lol

Hey Guys, I’m a ps3 pad player just looking for tips against Cammy, she seems my most difficult match up.

This is just a few videos of what I had left in my battle log between me and a pretty good Cammy, I think this is like 6/15 I guess we had. It was bad at first but I got my feet settled in just looking for tips.

It got quite laggy at times and you’ll see us doing random stuff and just stop playing at times.

Just had some games with a friend who plays Zangief, lemme know what you guys think.

Justin.tv - portalversus - FABINHO (Za) vs SARDA (Ak) - Melhor de 10 - SSF4 Local Match

My win% just went from 56 to 53 last night. I even lost to my buddy who was using Bison and Blanka FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. I am totally lost playing this character, it seems like I’m one of those training mode guys who can’t apply anything to the actual match (couldn’t get tatsu-sweep ONCE even though I did it 200 times 5 minutes before, granted there was some ugly lag). Ugh. Man, I need some serious help - but I don’t even know what to ask for.

EDIT: I actually win alot with Ryu, maybe I should stick to him? I’ve never liked playing him because he’s too popular, but then again its not like Akuma is Rufus in terms of popularity anyway.

can’t sweep blanka and bison btw.

Anyways yeah, akuma is a complex character, not much because of executions (his combos are relatively simple) but because you need fast reflexes and have to decide your next move in a matter of half a second. Ryu is definitely simplier, and if you win more with him, why not. It’s not like you HAVE to use akuma. Maybe use ryu for a few months to get experience with the game and then you can move to akuma

You can sweep Vega, right? I couldn’t land it ONCE for some odd reason, but then again the lag was pretty awful. At one point my st. HK wouldn’t even come out at times - I was doing it after the throw to setup the anti-SRK DF Kick. I suppose my problems come down to this:

  1. I don’t have confidence in using Akuma’s fireballs, seems like I always get jumped-in on if I do.
  2. When I use footsies I get countered by my opponents footsies.
  3. ST. HK whiffs too much and I’ve concluded its not too useful (???).

Let me throw a hypothetical situation again: I’m just outside cr. mk range. What kind of options do I have? Fireballing is risky because I’m too close, unless it’s an EX, and my st. HK will probably whiff and get me punished. Hell, last night I was facing my friend’s Akuma as Ryu and was waiting for his st. HK so I could punish it with my super (and I did). Bah.
Superlollo - you’re right about his execution, its not too hard. His trials were the first I completed, and quite easily at that. I’ll also be putting up a setups/combos video really soon, I can pretty much perform his whole arsenal in training. Just by watching this upcoming vid you’d think I’m a pro or whatever, but totally far from it. Ah well, back to training mode I go.

If you can already do the combos training mode won’t be too usefull…you just gotta get a lot of matches in and do some REAL practice…training mode only gets you so far. Also, akuma is one of the less “lag friendly” characters in the game…even an easy 3 frame link like s.hk into c.lp in lag conditions is WAY harder than say Ryu’s c.lp into sweep (1 frame) because you gotta “see” the moment where you have to input the c.lp…it’s not a rythm thing, hence it’s very difficult under lag…same goes for lk tatsu > sweep.

I finally got to play against PIKACHUAKUMA (JR Rodriguez)… As predicted, I got creamed pretty bad. I would like to say the lag also played a factor as it was an orange connection, but with no lag I would’ve gotten pounded even worse I think. Still, it wasn’t too horrible: there was about a half second input delay I’d say, but it was consistant, meaning that there wasn’t any jerkiness when playing. It was a little slow, but very smooth. In the end, JR’s setups were just too good, while I flubbed nearly all of mine. I also haven’t been playing regularly (I wish I could’ve had more time to practice before our set - He just added me to his FL last night and invited me to play this morning) and by the last few rounds I was just eating all kinds of punishment from him… :frowning:

It was fun though and I appreciate him taking the time to play against me. I’ll probably have our matches up tomorrow (if I have time) and he’ll probably have ours up on his channel as well, though he usually takes a few weeks before posting his matches up. :stuck_out_tongue:

Stick to Akuma. I know he’s frustrating at first, but once you learn to zone properly and his BnBs he becomes a monster and is much much more fun to play than Ryu. I 'm still have a long way to go, but I more than hold my own against good players. Just part of the learning process. Don’t give up, just keep at it and you’ll see improvements.

Hey guys, i’ve posted some videos and i’d like to know if anybody can point me some tips. I just reposting because they just fell behind the thread.

I’d be grateful.

Sarda - some of the setups you did there were fuckin’ awesome. Did I see a DF Palm OS’ed into an SRK? The demon on the blocked EX Green Hand was also great. Good stuff! When I saw you whiffing sweeps in training I thought to myself Hmm, I could probably teach this guy something - even I know to tatsu-sweep, but then I saw you play and now I’m thinking the opposite  Good show, bro.

Your fireball game is very weak, and you overabuse the demon flip, I mean all of the flips you’re doing might be you trying to get familliar with it as I am basicly doing air tatsus 90% of the time just because I want it as a reflex and never miss it, my tip for you would be your fireball game and to not have the sweep as a reflex, I’m currently training on short-tatsu+strong/fierce/rh whatever + flip grab or any flip, it’s a trick any akuma needs. Also one thing that made me sad was your teleports, you have so much time teleporting, notice whenever they jump unsafe towards you because they are so used to your teleports they forget you can dp their shit to the clouds.
You punch-flip when you think they will dp, jump, or to gain ground control and from there you can mix-up with grab, short, whatever basicly, you should forward-fb more and not tend to use the crouch-strong at all times. Im sure if you watch your ibuki match you can see yourself pressing strong twice even though you are out of range, you teleport without hesitation, basicly everything I see if your brain reflex and you need to force yourself to not do those, any good player will dizzy your ass in seconds, and im not talking about pro’s. if you play against a good player and you jump back and do the obvious fierce-airball you will get punished hard. I like your patience with Akuma, another note the Ibuki matchup if she jumps towards you and does the rolling grab (forgot hte name lol) while you teleport you will get punished and if she was any good she would do that until you stop teleporting and then she would mindgame you and dizzy your ass, hehe. Good luck.
