The difficult thing is that, as odd as it sounds, there’s things that work against better players that don’t work against bad players, because good players know not to do really–really–unsafe things in an average fight. They’ll shoot to minimize risk and maximize opportunity.
IMO, play to be a better player and don’t take online too seriously. Trying to beat bad players will require reinforcement of bad behavior (like non-reaction srk wake-up and constant jump-ins).
Basically, play the person, not the character, if they suck n fall for the same shit, even if good players wouldnt, do it I say. Dont give too much respect to bad players. Thats my philosophy anyway.
My thoughts exactly. And with that, it’s time for some more vids of me fucking up!

Not exactly where I want to be, but I think I’m controlling my matches a little better. The match I like/hate the most is the 2nd one against the Balrog player. I thought I had that one in the bag, and then I completely lost it… What’s worse is that I’m not sure, but I think I was cheated out of a win in the 2nd round: I got my Ultra off at point blank range (his hand is clearly going through my body during a Jab) and yet he gets to recover AND jump away to avoid it?
Bollocks!!.. Though the frame data will probably prove me wrong on that and he was supposed to get away.
You’re not gonna go anywhere with akuma until you learn how to punish…blocked headbutt punished with a crouching medium kick??? seriously??? You can ultra that motherfucker or at least do s.hp xx lk tatsu > shoryuken…hell, even a forward throw so you can start vortexing him…you’ve done that damn c.mk like 3 times lol…you even tried to punish with a hadoken once…
Also vs boxer EVERY time you throw a hadoken you gotta buffer ultra, and if he does TAP or any ex shit make him eat it.
Go into training mode and work on some punishing combos, they’re really easy with akuma…
LOL! Problem is, I did. First time I tried a c. HP that I was going to BnB. Nothing comes out. 2nd time was supposed to be c. MK , HP Hado. Only the MK comes out. 3rd time I tried throw, LP and LK come out… sigh
The only punish on headbutt that I got was on the 4th or 5th one where I did s. HP, SRK + HP. But it was too late then. I know about TAP and how I can bait it for ultra for having done it many times against other boxer. But this one wasn’t biting as much as I thought he would. Meh… I’m still kicking myself about that match.
It’s not. It’s a “safe” combo that allows me to recover (I.E. Push my opponent away) and “see if my timing’s right”, though against Rog, that’s probably not very safe as his headbutt can still catch me afterwards. Still, when I fail even such an easy combo as c. MK, HP Hado, it means my execution is sucking something fierce. I usually take it as a sign that I need to calm down and concentrate on getting the inputs down correctly instead of trying to quickly mash them out in hopes of beating my opponent to the punch (no pun intended).
Maybe it’s my timing, but I don’t think I’ve ever caught a balrog with a BnB after headbutt, though I’ve used throws plenty of times. Next Rog I meet, I’ll work on BnB after blocked Headbutt though, thanks!
only seen the first two and apart from whats been said you lp mashing doesnt lead to much and seems to even replace combos lol jumping h.k lplplp
you shouldnt waste an ex bar on air hado unless you have a reason ie:holding them still in the corner while you jump in or actually hitting them with both
although who am i to be giving advice check out my vids i made today i didnt do much better and give advice if you want , other than “you jump and fireball too much” i know i do its fun to jump lol

It’s not mashing. It’s supposed to be lp, lp, mp (or mk) and then BnB. But it doesn’t seem to want to come out too much online. Either I’m screwing up the timing or the input’s getting dropped somewhere. Since I’m consistently “missing” on the mp link, it must be my timing (can’t be that each time I try it, the connection keeps dropping it).
I know I should cut it out, but I can get it about 80% of the time in practice mode. I can also get j. HK, c. HP, LK Tatsu, HP SRK with 95% accuracy. I know I can do it, just can’t get it to work online. :bluu:
As for your vids, you lucked out: if I miss my lk tatsu to begin my bnb, I get murderised… Same against Ryu. If I try to jump in as much as you do, I’d get SRK’d then Ultra’d each time.
learn to maximize damage given the opportunity. ie. BnB
(my personal opinion) akuma should be played defensively. That means pulling bitch moves to avoid getting hit, and making your opponent do unsafe things to try and catch you. All along the way, you counter said unsafe maneuvers. THEN, once you score an untechable knockdown: YOU STICK TO THEM LIKE FLIES ON SHIT. YOU VORTEX THEM TIL YOUR FISTS BLEED DEATH.
If they escape said vortex, rinse and repeat. enjoy
If you guys learn when to punish you will start to find you will win those matches against the average players online. Every time you miss a punish you are giving up a chance to remove 30% of their health. Especially when those punishment opportunities have such a large window.
As Akuma his basic combos are super easy to use and still incredibly effective. There is no excuse to give up free damage.
I say play what ever is working for the match. If defense is called for then turtle to your hearts content, but if your foe has a hard time dealing with pressure then pressure him. One size doesn’t fit all IMO.
If you’re feeling unsure about s.hp xx lk tatsu whatever just do c.mk xx lk tatsu, it’s a lot faster and doesn’t need any timing…you’ll do some 50 less damage but hey, it’s better than a fireball =)
Funny enough, I was just doing that in offline practice mode yesterday, and wouldn’t you know it, I have an easier time getting the lk tatsu to combo after the c. MP rather than c. MK.
I can also do c. lp, c. lp, c. lk, lk tatsu much easier than the two above, though I lose on damage by doing that. I should probably just stick to c. HP, lk tatsu for now.
c.hp xx tatsu is easier but a lot slower than s.hp xx tatsu. Anyways yeah, do whatever works best for you, the damage is the same.
I also had (and somewhat still have) the c.hp bad habit and it really fucks me up when doing fadc combos. If you’re relatively new with akuma you should not get that bad habit and try sticking with s.hp even if it’ll be more difficult at first
You need to work on damage opportunities, or work on zoning your opponents into submission and blocking. I usually see people who go all out offense or defense, but neither stood out in your matches, I think you play haphazardly.
You’ve had many an opportunity to punish that Ryu and Balrog in the 1st and 2nd videos. You easily had a hit confirm between the demon flip into the 2x c.lp. Could went into c.HP -> lk. tatsu -> HP.SRK so many times.
I’ve noticed you tend to not capitalize on your successful jumpins as well. You’re a pretty risky akuma, and as Loltima said ^, you really need to work on zoning. The only fireballs I seen thrown were the air fireballs to escape, or the ones landed after a blockstrong.
Work on throwing fireballs within the correct range so the opponent doesn’t recklessly throw out moves since he knows you’re not going to do anything about them.
One more thing,
Akuma is a low health character (850 health) meaning play cautiously until you can read the type of player your opponent is. Zone, run away, do whatever and then take advantage of their mistakes with huge combos.
Well, I had a few more matches just now (recorded, but not encoded and uploaded to youtube yet). And though they’re better, I think I know what my problem is: nervousness.
I see the openings, my mind reacts, but I get a tad overzealous and mess up my inputs. I manged to land a whole heap of BnB’s during this set (or at least the beginning of BnB’s), but I keep flubbing on inputs or completely miss my timing with the SRK. I’m just not wholy confident in my skills yet as I have a long way to go yet.
Loltima’s right though, right now, I’m not concentrating on either defense or offense. I’m just going out there and doing anything. I used to be defensive, but apparently that’s wrong (do more DF’s, don’t run away so much). I’m also trying to get rid of the bad habit of chucking Zankus all the time, especially the HP ones as they can be easily avoided (and punished) by good players. I try to avoid chucking plasma in general now, except here and there and as part of a “safe” combo. Even when another player starts a FB war with me, I just tend to jump over them without really throwing an Air fireball all the time.
That’s another thing I have to change, I found out that I’m playing this game too much like SFII - I realised this as I was reading some replies to DSP’s latest SFIV vids and someone commented on how he’s bad at SFIV because he’s playing it like if it’s SFII. I gotta get in the goove and start putting up more SFIV type fighting skills. Watched some Akuma vs. Ryu matchup vids @ the SF Dojo, and I gotta say, those guys are mad crazy with Akuma. My favorite match had to be the Edma vs. Valle match. Even though edma lost, that crazy move he did at the end where he avoids Valle’s FA by doing an EX air Tatsu, lands behind Ryu and does an Ultra right in his face! Awesome!!
