Could anything have saved SvC?

RB uk. I’ve seen that before. Great site and a great Gouki player as I was told.

I’ll go on record and say that SvC did a few things that should be carried over into future fighting games. Most have been stated already, but I’ll reiterate them for good measure:

  1. New Moves for Dan: His parody of Ryo’s level 3 punch was awesome (unblockable with autoguard too!), along with the Haoh-Shoko-ken and return of the Otoko Michi!

  2. A more evil look for Demitri: I know the Vampire / Darkstalkers series is supposed to be campy, but Demitri’s SvC sprite fits his character very well, evil and badass.

  3. Zero: Completely broken in the arcade version (slightly better on consoles), but comes complete with everything he had from the GBA games at the time.

  4. New sprite and moves for Earthquake: Updated sprites are always a good thing, and 'Quake gets a nice overhall with new moves.

Those were the main ones I could think of. Having Tessa / Tabasa in basically a direct port of her Warzard version was awesome too. So yeah, even if the playability was horrid the character designs and tweaks had a lot of redeeming value in some cases. Just my 2 cents.

"what the hell is Match of the millinieum? "

This game stood up to the quality test:lovin:

SVC hada pretty kickass announcer…

“HEE-UH COMES A CHALLENG-UH!”

Ok. Could you elaborate on that a bit? In what ways is it broken, un-fun, and frustrating?

Actually, quite the opposite. I’m well aware that then general populace here loathes the game. So, I realize that the game is probably flawed and broken in some pretty severe ways. I’m just not aware of what those are. So, really I’m trying to find what’s not redeemable in the game.

You see, we have it at work on a NeoGeo machine and so I’ve only played it with a handful of people in a very casual manner. It felt very awkward, slow, and just plain weird at first. But after playing it for a while, we got into it and had a lot of fun playing it. There tricks and traps we use in the game are definitely different from other SF games, but I’m not aware of anything that feels more broken than the tricks and traps in other games.

I guess that’s what makes me so curious about what the flaws are in this game that make it so undesirable to everyone. I mean, you’ve got SF3:3S, where there’s a small group of top tier characters that seem to dominate all the high level matches I see. It’s not that the game seems broken per se, but it doesn’t seem like the whole cast is balanced. Then there’s CvS2, with it’s roll cancels and certain beastly characters. Now, I realize that rc’s did actually kill this game for some people, but there’s still a decent group of people that look past it’s quirks and play it competitively.

So basically, I’m left wondering. What problems does SvC have that make it seemingly far more broken then the other fighting games that people do continue to play?

I’m really not trying to be a troll here, or anything like that. I’m just a casual player of the game that’s curious :wonder:

I brought this game today…

>_< is all I got to say…

Zero’s traps apparently are very good. He’s also got an infinite. Geese also has a pretty easy infinite.

These two are probably the most broken. More people would put Zero above Geese.

Zero and Geese were the worst but Violent Ken and glitch-abusing Tessa weren’t exactly shining examples of balance, either.

The Wizard bitch’s crossup unblockables.
Mars traps.
Geese c.C / easy infinite / fb mixup;trap / dashing Raging Storm
Chun Li spinning bird kick combos / 2BBB 3C xx super / 1button infin on Demitri.
Whoever has an air throw has air priority.
Guile infinite booms if done properly and not GC’d (GC in itself is fucken stupid)
Throws cost meter and have no range whatsoever; can attribute part of that to the shittiest hitboxes in a fighting game.
Controls.

I thought GCFS being so abusable was one of the biggest problems?

THE SPRITES…THE SPRITES NIGGA! Sike nah…SVC didn’t need to be made. SNK doesn’t know how to make team-up games. SVC was KOF with Capcom characters thrown in. And what was up with the loading when picking secret characters…on fuckin xbox, are u kidding me. I have never seen so many slow ass moves in my life. I think what would have saved this game though is if they had a better storyline, better sprites and added more characters.Between SNK and Capcom there are alot of characters i’m still waiting to see from them on one of these games.

Hey it worked in the first SF anime, nothing random about that.

Yeah, my impression is that this is a broken and slopper KOF.

Though the spirtes are good IMO.

Agreed! Best SNK Announcer since RBFF 2.

You can’t escape.
" NO ESCAAAPE! FIIIGH! "

If that were true, the game would be a lot better…

Ok, a lot of that does sound pretty broken. However, Geese, Zero, and Demitri are hidden characters. So, why not just ban boss/hidden characters in tournaments? The Guile thing I wasn’t aware of…how do yo do that? As for Chun Li’s combo(s)…they’re good, but are they really game breaking?

As for the throws…I’m not sure. On the face of it, it seems a little bit goofy, but I think it’s there for a reason. To me, it says that you can’t only rely on turtling and then throwing. You have to put up some offense in order to be able to throw. And if throws were free, with the CGFS system you could just turtle all day, then when the other guy attacks CGFS and throw him.

I can kinda see this one. It definitely does make the game reward you for turtling. I haven’t played it in a while though, so I forget. Does it cost meter to do the GCFS? If not, I can see how that could make the game pretty boring. However, if it does cost meter is it still so abusable as to break the game?

Hmm, that does sound like a handful of broken things. I’m guessing it’s the combination of all those things that turned people away? At any rate, it’s too bad. It seems like SNKP could have easily put out a new rev of the board to fix the infinites and unblockables. And, they could have tweaked the CGFS system to use some(more) meter to not make it so abusable. Oh well…

Thanks for the explanations guys!

Newb quiz:
What’s a GCFS?

If we ban secret characters, then nobody will be able to touch Guile (except Chun Li). Guile’s sonic booms charge time is so fast, that he’s basically like O-Sagat on crack. Chun can get to him because I think she can cr mk and go underneath the sonic boom.

Also Tessa would be tough to handle too with her unblockables/trap/garbage on the screen.

GCFS = Guard Cancel Forward/Front Step

It stands for Guard Cancel Front Step, basically it allows you to cancel from incoming blocked attack into a dash, which can then be canceled into a variety of other moves. Obvious problem being, unlike the basic Guard Cancel, which has a preset move, performing a GCFS allows you to, in effect, cancel into anything you want.

P.S. It does cost a little power to perform this move. But you can perform it in two ways, a double tap foward costs less than using the button activated version (i.e pressing BC during the block).
