I think that’s exactly why punching her was justified. She could have had a knife or even a gun and I don’t blame the cop for not taking any chances. As I said before, bitch deserved it.

He got fustrated and lashed out… not a sign of a proffessional. The two women didnt pose a physical threat to him so everyone can throw that idea out of the window. When they resisted their warning/arrest then its taser time. No fisticuffs needed.

while the punch was justified, it looks like he punched her out of rage. Its one thing if she kept coming after him when she shoved/pushed him, but she backed up and probably thought “oh shit i fucked up”.
It reminds me of the Chris Rock joke where a woman never expects to get punched in the face until she says that one wrong thing, then she gets ready for the punch.
Unless you’re trolling I cannot fathom how any of you see this as police brutality. She deserved that punch. The officer was in a situation where he was alone and the people around him would probably have taken his gun and shot him. Fuck that. I would’ve shot first and worried later.

yeah, shocker, a cop was assaulted and for SOME REASON he retaliated. though I’m sure he could have just sat down and started explaining to them the situation and then to pleasantly calm down and cooperate.
You have the benefit of looking back at the situation instead of being active in it. The police officer had to do something at that moment to diffuse the situation so he wouldn’t get overpowered and have his life threatened.

Seriously, she assaulted an officer and he tapped her in her face a little. Look at the video, she’s fine after. If he would have punched her for real things would have been much different.

If he hit her harder nothing should be different. He was placing someone under arrest and she was interfering. Worse than that she physically assaulted him. Police officers are trained to control or eliminate the threat if this occurs. She could have gotten shot and he would have been 100% justified for it.

So I used to be really interested in how trained professionals actually deal with physical altercations, because in high school I did karate and wanted to know if I used this stuff people would actually sue me. It turns out that, yeah, it would, and most of it would be justifiable too.
From my reading it seems that as far as assault cases are concerned, where both parties are suing and counter-suing each other, everybody ALWAYS says it was “self-defense.” Some of the state laws about what does and doesn’t actually count as self-defense are arbitrary and actually vary depending on what state you’re in. As for your comments about firearm retention, most states actually have specific statutes about at what point when somebody is going to use a gun against you that you are allowed to use deadly force. For some states, it’s when they’re reaching for a gun, for some it’s when they’ve drawn it. None of those situations applies here though since it’s clear from context nothing like that was going to happen.
What I’ve read online and elsewhere suggests that a good rule of thumb for knowing how fucked you are, legally, for “defending yourself” depends on whether you had a reasonable chance for leaving the altercation before you were “forced” to hurt somebody. So if somebody soccer kicks your shin while you’re entering the bar because they don’t like your face, and you decide to retaliate with a tiger knee, lawyers are going to get up in your ass about why you didn’t just leave the bar since you were so close to the entrance. They actually have a good point–it stops being self-defense when you decide to retaliate.
But this guy was a police officer and he has a duty to fulfill here. That’s why I think the talk about “self-defense” is nonsensical. He’s in the line of duty, enforcing his will on the situation. That’s his job. Some ignorant seventeen year old black girl, even if she was built like Kimbo Slice, wasn’t actually threatening his physical safety even if her actions constitute legally as “assault on a police officer.” It’s clear from the video she was just shoving him to get her off her friend.
But you won’t hear his department tell reporters, “Yeah, he was in his rights to give her a right cross to the jaw, cuz, well, cops have to get physical and shit happens! And the girl wasn’t even injured so what’s your problem?” They’d actually be RIGHT if they did say this, but they didn’t and aren’t going to because it just makes cops sound like fascists who don’t care about who they hurt in the line of duty. So instead they’re going to get down on their knees and say it was self-defense, when anybody that knows anything about what legally counts as self-defense knows the police department here is just putting up smoke screens to save face and cover ass.
And actually, I don’t think the cop was unprofessional to finish the job the way he did. He actually did a pretty good job pinning the girl against the police cruiser without hurting her. Even if it looks ugly, it worked. Even the cross in hindsight, to people that know what to look for, was actually pretty harmless as it probably didn’t even leave a bruise. So if he didn’t cause physical harm and most importantly, DID THE JOB HE WENT THERE TO DO, what’s the problem?
The problem is that it’s still ugly, and media sensationalists who know exactly what’s going on are going to latch onto it like pitbulls anyway–as a cop, he already knew this and just decided to not give a fuck. He has my sympathy, but he still gets a C.
