Computer Help Thread v4.0

is it perhaps a program you recently added. Go to start run and type in msconfig in here you can see all kinds of things like which programs are loading on startup and you can also click bootini and it will check your boot path for you. after you are done it will ask you to restart, and it will load again once the computer starts than you just have to exit and tell it not to restart your comp again.

Thats the thing tho, I don’t know what to edit in the boot.ini area.

Also, I’ve yet to install anything in quiet sometime =/

I’m sure my HAL is still corrupted due to the fact that I’ve yet to re-install it and all I’ve done was had my computer say its ok to turn the OS in this state.

Anyway I can talk to you thru AIM on this to continue?

I’ve never configured the boot.ini. I just click check boot paths, and it will let you know if its working alright. Its useful when you have windows xp and you reformat and the computer still registers your old copy of xp installed. If you go into the boot.ini and click the check boot paths it will notice that one of them isn’t working, and delete the nonworking one.

However, my aim is LazymanOO. I also added it to my profile. Msg me with any questions you have.

So I’m in the market for a video card, and I’ve only got about $150 dollars to waste.

I’m absolutely clueless as what to pick, be it ATI or nVIDIA, etc. I’ve asked around and so far this looks like a pretty good option. What do you guys think?

that card looks pretty good. Just make sure you have a PCI express port.

Some tips

Well, my computer is running somewhat slower than usual for some strange reason.

I did a “repair” (install all my windows files) and for some reason my comp is just running slower than usual.

Sure its running again, but damn…

Justing wondering…

How do you re-install the hal.dll file correctly?

system32\hal.dll

perhaps try this fix

Yeah. I’m a big fan of Linksys equipment. Oh, and no need for the quotations. That’s what they’re called. Switches. =P

Ah, well I’m on the desktop just fine…
It’s just that now the computer feels like its slower than usual and I can’t really tell what it is =/

With that said, whats the best way to reformat the hard-drive?
Looks like I may need to.

If you are using windows xp. Just use the installer to reformat.

If you are using 98.Well let me know and i’ll get you the directions.

Vista. I am unsure I haven’t used vista yet.

My task bar and desktop icons disappeared on a restart after I installed the most recent automated updates for Windows XP. My only way to get around the computer is through run prompts.

This is what MS has to say.

It’s not a corrupted user profile because the administrator account has the same problem. I ran Windows Defender in safe mode with nothing found. I am very sure this is a problem with Explorer because it does not start up, even in safe mode. Since I’m very familiar with all of my start up programs, I very much doubt one of them is the problem… especially since the problem didn’t happen until after I installed the automatic updates.

If reinstalling Explorer/Windows is my only option, do I need to worry about losing any of my files or programs? I’ve never had to actually fix the operating system itself before.

I take it you’ve already verified explorer.exe isn’t listed in the Processes tab of Task Manager still?

If you do an upgrade, you’ll generally keep data/settings. If you do a clean install, you’ll lose everything on the drive that you install to.

After having my motherboard die on me last week I’ve been shopping for new computer parts. I’ve already decided on everything I’ll need except for the video card. It’s been a few years since I’ve shopped for video cards so I have no idea what would be a good video card for me. I’m only looking to be able to play games like COD4 and Bioshock on a good setting and possibly get into HL again once episode three comes out. Anyway, after searching I came across a few video cards that I think are good but I just want to know what everybody else thinks. Price isn’t a problem here as I can look to spend about $200. Here are the video cards:

#1

#2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130291
#3
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16814130082

The third video cards looks better than the other two just by looking at it but if it is better, how much better is it? Since it’s the most expensive of the bunch I want to know if it’s really worth it considering that I don’t play games on my computer that much so getting up to max settings isn’t my #1 priority. Thanks again for the help.

None of those.

8800GT ftw.

Yeah, I asked YellowS4 what kind of vidcard he had when he posted up his desktop. It was an 8800GT.

[Note: He took the screencap when The Fifth Element was playing on his desktop. It was the Blu-ray version, but it was hella crisp].

the 8800GT is almost comparable to the 8800GTX, and it’s half the price
the 8800GTS is slightly cheaper than the GT, and it gets pwned in performance

If you can hold out I’ve heard the 9800 series is about to come out at the end of the month so all the 8800 card prices should drop, as for me I only go BFG, and I went all out with the 8800 GTX OC edition, and I’m very happy with it.

BFG is awesome

personally, I prefer XFX or even better, eVGA because of their lifetime warranty and upgrade program.

I was recently looking at Call of Duty 4 for the PC, under the system requirements. So far I’m good on most counts, except the processor speed and the video card.

Processor Speed
What I have: 2.2GHz
What it recommends: 2.4GHz

Video Card
What I have: ATI RADEON HD 2400XT
What it recommends: ATI RADEON 9800PRO or NVIDIA GeForce 6600 video card

My first question would be if it’s possible to still play CoD4 on my PC with the stuff that I got?

And if so, what consequences would I run into [I’m wondering moreso about major ones, such as my shi’ blowing up or something…]?

Thanks for any info.
