Computer Help Thread v4.0

Quick question. On my desktop (which I don’t use that often >.>) after prolonged use, and more specifically watching videos and stuff, after a while the screen will simply switch off. The computer remains turned on by goes into a sleep mode and the only way to get it back is to reboot it.
I asked about this before and was instructed to update my video card drivers.
Assuming I have done that and still encounter the same problem, could the power adapter be the problem?
I’ve had problems with it in the past so I’m wondering if it 's simply the card not getting enough power.

after a prolonged period? specifically how long

have you tried the keyboard? i thoguht the same thing happened to me once, but the mouse wouldn’t take it out of sleep mode, only the keyboard.

right click your desktop > properties > screen saver tab, power options… anything?

doubt it’s the cord.

do you get any errors when that happens? right click my computer > manage > event viewer > system
any reds after you reboot it?

I’ll check that next time it crashes.
I thought it was the power converter (sorry, shouldn’t have used the word adapter) because it’s failed on me in the past.

it could be that, but that normally wouldn’t leave the system on. it would just shut it down.
if you get another power supply, i recommend corsair, ocz, seasonic (best brand), or cooler master.

this is mine, and it’s great at the price:

it only uses 100 at any given time, which is a nice energy saver.

Ok srk, i need router help plzzz.

Im using a Speedstream 4100 as my DSL modem and im with sbcglobal AT&T , thingy. anywho.

My netgear is a piece of shit and it doesnt want to work with my new pc. its a Netgear Wireless-G Router WGR614 and me and this Arab guy , you know, the funny kind of guy you see on tv sitcoms. i met him today and it was real, and i was scared. couldnt understand a goddamn thing he was saying to me.

Anyway, we went on for like an hour and got nowhere fast. couldnt get my modem to make a wireless connection with the router. basically the guy came to the conslusion that the router is busted. somehow i dont believe him but whatever.

SRK, in your guy’s opinion, what is a GOOD DSL router that works excellent for gaming online? I upgraded my internet speed today to, should take effect on saturday morning. * 6meg download 1 meg upload speed on dsl. * let me know what you think and your suggestions. netgear has been too much trouble for me so far.

I had one Netgear router in my lifetime. Threw it out and bought a Linksys WRT54G.

Need some help on how I can hook up my xbox/wii to the net with my current connections.

As of right now, our modem and router are right beside the computer in the living room, and I have about 30 or 40 feet of ethernet cord running from the router in the living room to the computer in my room, which is what Im on now, all fine and dandy.

Now, I dont feel like running two more 30-40 foot cords from the living room, through the garage, and into my room to get my xbox and wii online, so is there an easier way I could move some shit around so I dont have hundreds of feet of cord running all over the place?

Is that router in your living room a wireless router? Because the Wii is wireless. Right now, unless Nintendo or some 3rd party company makes a NIC for it, the Wii will only connect wirelessly.

As far as your 360 is concerned, get yourself a hub or a switch. It will take that one ether cable to your room and split it amongst your two devices. Take that long cable from the router, plug it into the uplink port on the back of the switch, plug a separate ether cable for both your 360 and PC and plug them into the other ports on the switch. Tada.

I like Linksys equipment.
Here’s a good switch to use.

Well I bought a d-link wireless router a while back, just havent hooked it up yet. I just have the regular xbox, not the 360, just have it for my fighting games. As for the wii, I just bought a LAN adapter for it today, this one: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10090595&catid=

Heres the router I bought as well: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10076871&catid=19994

Regular or 360, the use of a switch would still apply if you’re not wanting to run so much more lengths of network cable. I drew something up that might help. lolmspaint

Let me know if that makes sense or not.

ohh so that switch kinda acts like a splitter would for cable?

That’s exactly what it does, good sir.

dont use a hub if you’re gonna be using more than one of them at the same time.

Luckily hubs are pretty much scarce compared to switches nowadays. =P

do you have recommend any specific “switch” ?? this should work right ?? http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=329623&CatId=2793
I need something for all my consoles…

Computer issue, hope someone can help =/

Using the computer, everything was just fine until today when the house suffer a small power outage.
So we lost power for a good 5 seconds then everything came back on. After that, I turned on my computer and tried to log into my Windows. However, when trying to log in I notice that it took longer than usual to load my desktop and that the “chime” that plays whenever logging into your desktop was playing slower than usual.

Oddly enough, the computer was running REALLY slow and I had no choice but to do a manual restart to get anywhere.

2nd attempt at logging back into my windows, same issue.

So, I decided to try to open the computer up in Safe Mode only to run into a message (after loading the motherboard) saying “<core windows>\system32\hal.dall has been corrupted” and is asking me to re-install that one file.
However, the hal.dll is part of the Boot file and will be close to impossible to just install that by itself.

So right now I’m running a full scan disk and runing a chkdsk /repair command thru DOS and may take to 45 mins - 2 hours in fully checking my computer.

Hopefully nothing is wrong, but doing a simple chkdsk, it did state that errors were found (how many, it did not say).

So right now I’m doing a full chkdsk scan and about to reinstall the Boot.ini files into the computer so I can log back in and try to re-install the hal.dll file and see whats wrong with it.

With this said, does anyone know what may have 'caused the issue?
Nothing hardware-wise looks damaged, and everything seems to be running fine on the motherboard. Hope it’s nothing bad, unless someone out there has a faster way in fixing this issue.

Does the computer read that you have all your ram still?
Also do you have a onboard sound card or a pci sound card?

The chkdisk is a good idea, however I am thinking since the power flashed off and back on it has a higher potential for messing with your motherboard/ram/sound/video cards. Than it does messing with your hard drive, but PC’s sometimes have crazy unexplainable problems.

Everything else seems to be running normally.

Everytime my computer boots it will tell me on the on-board items that are working, and all of them state that they booted up just fine (all the hardware anyways).

Alright, then well finish the chkdisk and all that fun stuff, and see if that helps if not. Then you might want to try a reformat, that will take software problems out of the equation.

Running scan disk, found no errors (and this is after the scan that takes quiet some time).

After a complete full scan, I’m no longer getting a corrupted error message from the HAL, however my desktop is running VERY slow.

Check out my hard-ware, and everything looks like its in check.

Unsure what the issue may be, and I really want to avoid a reformat =/
