Computer Help Thread v4.0

I am running Vista right now and can view everything just fine. I’d say try running the Safe Mode versions of IE and Firefox to see if maybe they have something screwing up the page. And of course check to make sure you didn’t somehow add SRK to the restricted zone for your web browsers.

Er thanks but it’s a laptop with no A drive. How else can I do it/will formatting fix it, and how do I format?? It keeps telling me there are programs in the background using the drive that are keeping it from being able to be formatted… ?

I have another laptop with Vista and every couple days it goes completely haywire and everything disappears from and changes position on my desktop and taskbars and it’s completely unusable… it’s fucking retarded.

There should be a key to get to your bios so you can boot from CD, or there should be a key which will boot from CD. You can boot from the Windows installation disk and format from there.

You can’t just go into windows and format your C drive. It doesn’t work that way.

if the install cd is just a restore cd given by the manufacturer it might not do a format, and it was stated that it wont restore, or install another version of windows since it was already ‘installed’

so if you can boot off a cd, then search for ultimate boot cd, download the iso, burn it and boot from it. it has many useful utility, the one you want to use is located under filesystem.

I’ve been trying to use my new USB drive. It’s a PQI intelligent stick 2.0 (1gb) but I put files on it and as soon as I take it out of the usb port, the files are gone when I put it back in or plug it to a diffrent computer. Now if I right click and check out the drive’s properties, the space used corresponds with the files being on it. THey just dont appear (and yes I have showing hidden objects)

Alright ive been getting a long-load up time when i turn on comp too log-on screen did defrag and virus scan nothing turned up. Anything suggested for a quicker zipper startup time? Running a P4 3.2 ghz with 2 gigs of ddr ram on a asus MB and mad props on those links!!!

Okay, with the recent news of working Dreamcast, CPS-III emulators, and rock solid Saturn emulators; I am ready for a system overhaul.

I am mainly interested in getting a 939 chipset with the ASROCK 939 AGP touting mobo they sell on Ebay. I wonder what would the recommended sys reqs for that setup? I do not want to part with my Geforce 6800gt OC yet and I already have over a gig of DDR1 ram. I run Windows XP Media Center, have a 300gig hdd, and a 21" CRT Trinitron. I would love to render HDTV resolution video.

Do you have any suggestions if I should go for the Dual Core plunge for those emulators or a single core AMD X-64 processor is enough?

Quick question, what exactly is wmpnetwk.exe in the processes list? It always appears to have a high CPU number and memory usage. Whenever my CPU usage is erratically above 60% for no reason (which is most of the time, it often hits 100% despite having nothing running), I’ll close that thing and it goes to 0-6%. Then about 20 or so seconds later, it’s back on the list, slowing everything down. How do I get rid of this bastard?

Thanks.

It’s Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Usually with WMP11.

If you are not sharing music…you don’t need it.

To disable it:

Under the “RUN” command in the start meni type "services.msc"
Scroll down to "Windows media player network sharing"
Double click and under startup type set to disabled
Click okay

Hope it helps…

If you are ever confused about processes that you have running, Process Library is a great place to find out what they do and what they belong to. For example, here is the entry for wmpnetwk.exe

It will wipe all the drives, so if there’s something you want to keep on another drive connected to that laptop, then remove it first or it goes bye-bye.

My floppy drive is installed in my computer. I can see it in Device Manager and it says that it is working properly. But I can’t find it when I click on My Computer. I tried typing A: into the URL bar in My Computer but it says that the path cannot be found. What’s going on?

get the tweak UI power toy from microsoft’s website… it’s an easier way to reenable the drive, as it’s probably just disabled.

or right click my computer, manage > disk manager, and it should be there.

i just recently bought a new video card for my computer. it is a GeForce 7600. i use my computer for a lot of online games such as WoW and Dota. My brother uses it for Counterstrike. I originally had my computer built for me about 4 years ago, and i need to upgrade some of the components. i did see an improvement on Dota and CS, however, when i went to play WoW, the text in the game is illegible.

here is a screenprint of what it looks like.

see the yellow text on the corner go upwards?! sometimes i can make out words, but this is still very difficult to play, especially an MMORPG where you do need to see what is being said and type things for yourself. also, light seems to be reflected at times in light, such as that line from the center of the screen going upwards to the top right corner.

i did try to adjust the resolution to all the different options in game and that still didnt help. i opened up the video card control panel and set it to all different settings (all performance, to all quality, to inbetween) and still no luck.

again, my other programs work great, just not WoW on my new video card. what do you think could be the problem?

i have a pentium 3, 799 mhz (i know, its low), 768 ram (i know, working on upgrading it as well).

Ok I installed the tweak UI powertoy, here’s what I’m getting:

@nate: try turning anti aliaisng on, and check your clear type tuning settings.

@VRViper: go into your bios and make sure that somehow it didn’t accidentally check up on "do not use device"
if so, you might have a bad floppy driver. Don’t forget, XP doesn’t tell you really well if there’s anything wrong.

i tried the anti aliasing to all the differnt options i had, and still no luck. dont know what you mean by clear type tuning settings. looked it up in help, but no luck

Random question.

I was playing hitman 3, and for some reason the game randomly shuts off in game and returns me to my deskstop. I have no clue as to what the hell causes this. I am not a real pc gamer, so I have yet to try other games. If it matters, my video card is an ATI 1300 pro.

Thanks.

how do i prevent myself from getting spyware. i keep getting porn pop-ups (despite not looking at porn on this pc). i use spybot, i think i get rid of it, and it comes back again.

thanks

Is Spybot the only security programming you’re running? If so, that’s not going to cut it. It’s decent for some spyware, but you still need something for viruses and possibly another adaware program. I personally recommend avast! and Ad-Aware, although you can look at the free software threads for other recommendations. Assuming you are running XP SP2, you might also want to look into a third-party firewall, as the XP Firewall isn’t the greatest. ZoneAlarm is pretty good, but again the software threads will have plenty of other options, too.
