Computer Help Thread v4.0

clear type tuning is one of the windows updates that makes text much clearer on the screen. it’s just a wizard that automatically adjusts it. other than that, i’m out of ideas.

ad-aware, and then when you find spyware, write it down, go into regedit, and delete all instances of it.

Sounds like you might have some unnecessary programs launching on system startup. Try this:

Click Start > Run. Type “msconfig” (no quotes of course) and click OK. Click the Startup tab, and using www.processlibrary.com (thanks to whoever posted that btw), uncheck Startup Items that are unnecessary to your computer’s boot. For example, if you have Quicktime installed, uncheck “qttask”, since it is merely a tray icon for QT that isn’t essential for your PC’s function nor the actual Quicktime program itself, and is only there for convenience. Just make sure not to uncheck anything important, like rundll32, or anything that you would still like to automatically launch upon boot (like processes related to anti-viruses, firewalls, etc).

While I’m in this thread, can someone explain to me the easiest way of completely disabling internet/network access from a wireless connection? I’m working on my sister’s laptop and need it to be entirely offline for a little while.

I’m not sure if this is the right place to put it but I’ll go with it anyway.

I recently got a nice 27" monitor, and everything looks fantastic on it, no complaints there.

What I did find is that I have the capability to play my PS2 or Wii on it, and that’s great, but there’s no sound (obviously since there’s no speakers on the monitor).

My question is this, can the speakers connected to my sound card (some elaborate set up with 5 units (2 front 2 rear one center, and an absurdly huge subwoofer) play the sound from the monitor? Do I have to get an adapter for the PS2 audio cables to connect to the sound card, or am I just out of luck?

Please halp ;3

So here’s my problem:

My girl and I moved in with the folks before heading to England (to save ALOT of money). I thought it would be SUPER easy to set up a network, as I have done it many times before, but I have tried almost everything and I am having no luck.
It should be plug and go, but I can’t find any evidence to support an issue with networking.

I have a laptop with Vista, and my Dad has a desktop with Vista (my dad is the main connection), but it still doesn’t work. It recognizes the connection to the computers, but the internet doesn’t work.

Here are some strange points to mention:

My girlfriend has an old laptop with XP, and our network was just fine, even when we were using the exact same equipment.

I installed the internet softwear on my laptop, and even when I try and make it the main connection for internet, but for some reason, it doesn’t even work when it’s directly connected.

I’m stumped; can anyone help me?

I have to live here for another two months, and I hate using my dads computer for the internet.

Thanks.

You sure can. I ended up having to do this with my 360 setup since my speakers did come with a connector for consoles, I’d have to constantly swap connections.

Grab a 1/8" stereo Y cable (It should accept two phono cables and combine it into one stereo cable) and connect that to your sound card’s line in/mic port. You’ll also likely need a phono passthrough connector thingy (I forget what they’re called, you connect the cables to that so you can get it to connect to the Y stereo cable)

Hope that helps. Alternately, just got to radioshack and explain what you’re trying to do and they’ll be able to tell you what you need.

Youtube is messing up for me on my home laptop. At my work laptop it’s fine, but at home, for the past week, I keep getting this message:

500 Internal Server Error

Sorry, something went wrong.

A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation. Please report this incident to customer service.
Also, please include the following information in your error report:

TONS of crazy numbers and letters

It’s just been happening this week.
Any ideas how to help? Thanks in advance.

Thanks!

I’ll do that later today, I appreciate your help.

Sooo uhh, my mouse wheel just died, and I have no idea what caused it nor how to fix it. The button works, it’s the scrolling function that doesn’t.

My mouse - Logitech MX310

I’ve installed drivers, and switched ports even (from USB to PS2), and nothing is working. When I tried it on another comp it’s the same thing. Is it down for the count?

If it was working before and mysteriously stopped working one day, then it’s probably ‘down for the count’ throws rose at yo’ :frowning: face

BTW this did help perfectly, thanks.

Another weird thing. After getting a problem in MAME, I pressed ctrl+alt+delete and it brought up the processes and stuff. But for some reason, none of the tabs are there. It’s just the processes list, without the menus at the top or anything else, not even the minimize and closing icons. It’s literally just a rectangle with processes now (but the “end process” button is still there), so I can’t access the applications or CPU usage tabs. Any ideas?

either processor will do you fine however if I were you, I’d go for the core 2 duo rather since you’re going to blow your money anyhow. and ditch winxp media center. you got a POS OS that’s for sure.

another one of these q’s, great. If this wasn’t the 17th time or so I’ve heard during the past weekend while at work, then I’d be more than happy to help but, I’m through with such an easy task. I’ll give you a hint for kickers: Device manager

Double-click anywhere on the grey part.

Is that a good deal? I know some other website probably has a better offer, but I need a place I can actually go to.

I’m having a few problems with my pc.

1: I try changing my cookie settings, but for some reason, they don’t apply. They always go back down to “Accept all cookies”

2: Pop up’s. I mean, I have a firewall, pop up blocker, virus scan and it just won’t stop POPPING UP CRAP! Agh! It started happening recently when I switched to McAfee. Now I can’t install any other program… ei: Norton, McAfee pro.

Blah.

For some reason, when I use my friend’s digicam to record .avi videos and import them into the timeline of Windows Movie Maker, it generates an error and closes Windows Movie Maker. This only happens with my friend’s .avi videos. I tried importing other .avi files into the timeline and it’s ok. Any ideas?

Also, what’s a good free video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker?

Thanks

Kakarotte: What does HijackThis say? You’ve got infestation on your system causing #2, which should be why #1 is happening.

VRVipe: What’s the crash bucket? This should be really easy to fix given that. (crosses fingers)

so i stop spyware/adware before it happens? is there some free real time blocker i can use?

Not exactly sure what you want, but it’s the first error in this screenprint:
